Such a deep loss and hurt still exists for those of us that remember the quick wit, intelligence, grace, and warmth of JFK. He was taken before his time and not by permission of the citizens of the USA. Stolen from his family and countrymen by an act of treachery so far reaching that it makes me shudder. RIP, JFK.

Very nice video to see John Kennedy enjoying the holidays with his family and friends. Carolina was very attached to his father. It is a shame that this was his last vacation that he was going to have, without knowing that a few months later he was going to be killed very sadly, he deserved to live his life with his family and see Carolina and John John grow up. I agree with everything you have said about the Kennedys here - and specifically JFK and Jackie. They are a great American family period. There is truly a lot of B.S. about that family going around. What people don't understand is that biographers no longer legally bear the burden of proof if they should get sued ever since a Supreme Court ruling in 1964. If a person is famous, they can write anything about them that they want even with no proof to back it up, and the prominent person can do very little about it, because the burden is on the famous person to prove the biographer wrong and that is a very hard thing to do. It used to be the other way around, the burden was on the writer to prove himself right. So it has been open season on famous people since 1964. Best of luck to you.

Additionally, I could help to answer your question, even though I am not one of those people. They want to tear them down, because the goal is take the people that love them -- and turn them into haters like them. But I will not be moved because, like you, I lived that time period and for me it was a deep and profound experience ----- and I know more about the Kennedys - as do you - than those people could ever hope to know.

+0907oliv, Thanks for all of your insight. I was not even aware of most of what you said here, but it sure does explain a lot. It is sad when people are allowed to so blatantly hurt others without any consequences. I recently finished reading Clint Hill's book "Me and Mrs. Kennedy". Clint was Jackie's secret service agent, and the only agent who tried to protect her and our President that day in Dallas, by jumping on the back of their limo and shielding them with his own body. His book is a great read with a lot of great stories and photos. All of the stories are interesting. Some are humorous and some are downright heartbreaking - like Clint's remembrance of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Families of government officials were being transported out of Washington, and some would be going to the safe bunker at the White House. It fell upon Clint to explain this to Jackie. He said she just locked eyes with him, and very deliberately and firmly said that she and her children would not be taking ANY shelter - that they would be staying with the President and would die with him, because their lives would be "nothing" without him. Clint said that when the crisis was over, he was relieved for many reasons, one of which being that he would not have the task of carrying Jackie "kicking and screaming" into the underground bunker at the White House. It was a humorous quote, yet when put into the context of what was to happen to the family just one year later, a very disturbing one. If you have not read the book, I do highly recommend it. Thank you so much, and my best to you, also!

+0907oliv, Thank you again for your profound insight. It is nice to communicate with someone who actually lived through that time, and felt the hope that the Kennedy administration brought with it. Like I said in one of my earlier posts, people and our nation in general during that time just seemed to be "kinder and gentler". It hurts when I think of what this world might be today if both President Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy had lived. It is even more disheartening to think that those of us our age will almost certainly never feel the optimism that we felt then. Again, thank you so much for responding. Take care!

The Supreme Court case is entitled "The New York Times v. Sullivan" and the decision came down in March of 1964. It is actually referred to in book version of Jacqueline Kennedy's oral history, but I have also heard about it through other sources. There is a conspiracy theorist who occasionally makes reference to bad biographers and poor documentations and writes scathing book reviews against some of these people. I do have the Clint Hill book, have not read it yet, but have perused it, and found the story that you are referring to. But there are two other references to the Cuban Missile Crisis and Jackie's refusal to leave her husband. One is in the Jacqueline Kennedy oral history itself (and was on the Diane Sawyer program), the other reference is in Ted Sorensen's book Counselor in which he was present in the family quarters during one of these conversations when JFK tried to get Jackie to take these vouchers that would get her and the children to a special underground facility and Jackie said she would not leave. Also, I wonder if you are aware of yet one other example of Jackie's absolute loyalty to JFK and that is that she continued to wear her wedding band until the day she died, and that when she was married to Onassis she wore two wedding bands, and after Onassis died, she returned to only one wedding band (the JFK one), and according to the man who sold reproductions of her jewelry on QVC, Jackie was buried with that wedding band. I also wonder if you are aware of the story of the Kunzite Ring, JFK's last gift to Jackie, which she received after he died.

What a shame that Jackie smoked, no doubt it was what caused her miscarriages and the death of Patrick, being born too prematurely. I am sure they didn't know that stuff back then though. No doubt what caused her cancer as well. Too bad, such a lovely family. Would have been nice for Caroline to have had more siblings, especially in that family!!! I also find it interesting that there seems to be so little security in these films, around the family. Or maybe such a lax security, not like we would see today.

No doubt smoking caused her miscarriages and earl death of Patrick plus caused her cancer? Really? You do realize most women smoked throughout their pregnancy in those days. The most significant impressions from these home movies: The back pain President Kennedy was obviously suffering; the lack of any intimacy between Jackie and John Kennedy, and, in fact an almost total lack of interaction. (It has been reported that their marriage was totally on the rocks at this time); and, lastly, those poor secret service guys being saddled with those swarms of kids.

+JNK It is obvious that JFK in particular had a "distant" connection with everyone. Those folks who said they were his closest friends never completely knew him, because he did not allow them to. We have all known people like that where you feel that you never quite connect - or that they never open up completely. I do think that he was truly himself with his children however. :-)

None that I know personally, just biographies I have read over the years written by both friends and historians - that for many reasons, Kennedy had a very detached personality where he could "compartmentalize" his actions, belief systems and feelings about people and events. He spent most of his life on the edge of death, whether in health or in World War II. He was given the last rites 3 times in his life before Dallas. All we know from his presidency onward could have very easily never happened. As far as he and his wife were concerned, they are both dead now, so I know that's a moot point.
@michaelbarnhart2593
@michaelbarnhart2593 8 жыл бұрын
Well that's good to know. Certainly your perspective based on your connections are a valid one. I have not intended to diminish the efforts the man made on a personal level or for his country. I expressed an opinion in my comments that was an objective view based on what I read, and nothing other than that. Thanks. :-)

Jacqueline Kennedy was well brought up and extremely private. She would never have poured out her marriage troubles in letters to friends and aids. Jackie did not have a miscarriage. I think these movies were taken after she had given birth to Patrick who was premature and died only 3 days old. He was born early August 1963.

@@hannejeppesen1809 Correct. She did give birth on Aug 7 1963. The baby was born prematurely and was due in September. I believe John Jr was due in early Jan or December 1963 but came in later November on the 25th. To my knowledge Caroline was not a premature baby

Jfk and Jackie never seemed in love to me. They came across robotic with no warmth. In fairness, it could be that they were a private couple. Who knows...

Neither of them felt comfortable showing affection in public. However, especially after their newborn son Patrick died at 3 days old, they were often seen holding hands.. A few months later JFK was killed. There's also a picture of them in a car, the president reaches over and brushes Jackie's hair off her forhead. That picture speaks a thousand words.

@@hannejeppesen1809 True. They could have just felt awkward in public, and adversity brings people together. I guess I was comparing them to RFK & Ethel, who seemed like they genuinely enjoyed being around one another.

@@pb4ugo19 They were different personality. I like both Jackie and Ethel, but they were very different. Ethel was outgoing to the extreme. Jackie's came from a broken home and then her mother remarried. Although both grew up with wealth, Ethel grew up in Chicago, Jackie on the East coast. I was born and raised in Denmark, when I came to the US I lived in Connecticut and New York City. As a Scandinavian I fully understand about not showing your feelings in public and sometimes in private as well. I reas somewhere that both Jack and Jackie's personality were like a huge iceberg, where most is hidden beneath the surface, Not sure if it was Jackie who said this or it was someone else that knew them. Jack and Jackie had more in common than most people realize,.

Say what you will but there has never been another American President that has had the charisma, charm, confidence and appearance as that of John Kennedy. Just picture Donald and Hillary and Kennedy in the same room. America has really lowered it's standards over the last few decades.
