Let’s be cognizant of the situation here; the guy was in his car posing a threat to no one but himself (it’s also noted he was suicidal) so of course they weren’t going to repeatedly yell at him to put the knife down stressing him out even more. Most of the time you see them yelling to “put the knife down” when the subject is out their vehicle posing a threat to the people around them. Every situation is different and I do believe the initial officers’ approach was correct in this case. It doesn’t mean that yelling “put the knife down” in general is the wrong way to go about trying to talk to an armed person.

Give me the link to a video where a cop says drop the knife 42 times, I’ll wait…because it seems as if you have some underlying hate for law enforcement who put their lives above an armed perp. If you are told to drop a weapon and you don’t after multiple commands, you are forfeiting your right to live. If this offends you so much how about you become a cop and try to talk to an armed perp who isn’t cooperating.

This was terrible, and was completely against protocol. Stop excusing cops doing poor jobs because they didn't immediately kill someone. Isn't it funny how its now a standard for cops to kill someone later instead of immediately? shouldn't it be not killing someone at all? especially when its OBVIOUS they pose no harm to you they just want you to kill them. Shithead cops, just wanna kill someone.

Literally my heart goes out to this poor soul, and the officers. I know none of them wanted to shoot him, and you know he wasn’t going to stab an officer, I mean you don’t know, but he knew we was never gonna make it to them. And for the officers in a situation like that, they assume he’s not there to hurt them, but that’s a big chance to take. Just a horrible outcome all the way around. But the officers did their job to the best of their ability. I feel like every officer needs to have some skill in talking to a suicidal person. I know it’s just more training and it cost money, but it’s a good thing to learn wording techniques to talk someone down from ending their life. That and learning hour to talk with someone who’s not mentally sound. I’m glad no one else got hurt, definitely sad that this had to happen. I know what you're thinking "Cops aren't the food delivery people we can't do that." But if you think about it, food and beer are typically a fun, happy part of life to take part in and could potentially calm down someone. Maybe in the moment, the suspect will reflect back on he and his friends all sitting down laughing, eating pizza and having a beer. If someone is willing to hurt you - badly, or tries to kill you to force your hand, mental health is not longer the problem. They made the decision knowing the outcome. One big thing I think they can do to help de-escalate the situation is to use different color lights once it's determined it's not a criminal offense and a mental situation or something. those cherries and berries usually bring out major anxiety in almost everyone. maybe something like green and yellow or something else. I'm all about protecting officers yet they had all the time in the world to prepare for this situation, yet immediately fired at him once he got out. have shields and be ready to get inside the vehicles you're standing next to. don't kill the dude immediately. I'm not saying what they did was wrong but we can learn from these situations.

You may be on to something with the lights. I disagree about your second point though. They only fired once he charged at them. They could have used less lethal, but that's risky at best and would likely have ended the same way. They need to retain control of the situation, and letting an unstable person run around unchecked with a knife is a bad idea.
@dr_kellogg2 жыл бұрын
@@0BuLLeT01 I know I said what they did wasn't wrong but in situations they can prepare for they shouldn't fire at him even if he is charging with a knife. Get in the vehicle close the doors with windows up. If he starts to break the glass, which we know is surprisingly hard with a knife, then you can fire but that also allows officers that aren't pushed inside their vehicles to hit him with less than lethal force. This was 100% avoidable if they had better training and forethought for situations like this. Like I said though we can figure out ways to de-escalate this without straight killing the dude.

I hate this. It's so sad to see a young person hurting so much -- not because of a physical ailment or an accident or a broken heart -- but from the act of living itself. Lots of things can make us hurt or be sad or have a bad day or week, but for someone who is clinically depressed, those kinds of things pile on to an already existing feeling of despair. It's unconscionable that a country as wealthy and as rich in health-care resources as the United States spends so little on mental health care and puts so little emphasis on it. You'd think our leaders in both parties could come to a consensus on something as critical and as toxic as that, but no -- they can't even come together to do that. Pathetic.

@OfficialBradChristian2 жыл бұрын
This is just common sense. They only did one thing wrong and that was the way they talked to him. You get the officers to lower the light just a little so it’s not shining directly on his face… Then you walk around the passenger side and ask him to roll down his window so you can chat with him. This puts loads of space between you and him and you would be able to act very quickly to step back or even run. And then you talk to him like a real human being. Ask him what happened, ask him what his name was, tell him your name, tell him a few things personal about yourself and that it was a rough day for you too. There is a definite chance they could’ve talked him down out of the tree, but he didn’t feel close enough to anybody and so he used “suicide by cop“ as his way out. In the end, you’ve got to take into account this is a knife, and he’s already inside a car. There’s a little bit of room to work with him on this.

Early on they could have identified this individual and called him by his first name. I too thought the primary communicator should have dropped his weapon as he spoke to the driver. Using the word "comply" does not help. Not very personable. the terminology reflects command and control not a personal connection. De-escalation is difficult to perceive when multiple officers have firearms pointed at you. With the door closed, the immediate threat to officers was not present. Caution, yes, immediate no. maintain some distance and have the mental health professional communicate with the driver.
@squalie92 жыл бұрын
Mental health professionals aren't miracle workers. The don't have magical soothing voices that turn homicidal and suicidal people docile. They don't have specific words that make mental breakdowns disappear. De-escalation is at this point nothing more than a red herring buzzword people use to deflect from real world situations.

@@patriotplays6990 I agree. At the point he attacked the officers, they had no choice than to shoot. No dispute there, but I hate that it got to that point. sometimes officers have no choice. In this case I would have preferred other choices made early on and maybe, just maybe a different outcome would have resulted. I think it is too low of a bar to simply ask our officers to be willing to be patient and not push an outcome. they have other resources at their disposal in that time period. I do not expect them to be mental health professionals. It was obvious he was having some mental health breakdown which would require professional help. why weren't those professionals called in? I just do not get it. Hours passed. Having additional guns pointed at you by officers does not change one's mental state other than increase futility. If you come with limited tools in your toolbox, that is all you use. If it is not the most appropriate ones, do not expect a good outcome.
