But it is debated if the crew also used mercury-based unguents to soothe their loins as many of the men like Lewis contracted syphilis.

The mercury laxatives were real, too. They were actually called Thunder Clappers. Sadly, it's not where 'go like the clappers' comes from, it's most likely based on the little clappers in handheld bells.

Going like the clappers comes from pre 1920s mining, using a metal pole to bore holes in. When it reached a certain depth a section called the clapper would hit the rock and make a loud sound, indicating to switch the rod around. Going like the clappers comes from the sound of multiple of these being used in a cavern to extract slate and other materials the fast workers were "going like the clappers"

Lewis is actually at least mostly correct about mercury being used as a laxitaive from the 16th to the early 20th centuaries. I don't know about the term clapper though. Calomel was a mercury salt which formed the "medical" basis of Dr. Rush's Thunderbolts even were taken by Lewis and Clarks expidition though they could hardly track them by such a small amount of mercury. Archeologists have used it presence to determine the location of their latrines near camps identified by more reliable methods

So I did the research and this is what I found. They did trace Lewis and Clark by finding the mercury deposits from the medicine/laxative they used on there expedition, but go like the clappers is referencing the clapper which is the inside of a bell.
