Very nice video, just what I needed to be explained!

Awesome video - when you said you wished they worded "fixed IP" it more like "DHCP reservation", though, I didn't feel what you were saying. If anything, setting a forced, unchanging (static) IP is doing the opposite of anything 'Dynamic' (the "D" in DHCP) and should lean away from verbiage surrounding "DHCP", in general. Best practice usually avoids the verbiage "DHCP reservation" and leans heavily towards "Static IP", as that is more cut and dry. Now that I'm done nit-picking like a sweaty nerd, I must say thanks for what I learned from your vid regarding the Switch 8 POE-60W's features - keep up the solid vids

"Dynamic" simply means the IP address is assigned whenever the client (that elects to use DHCP) announces itself on the network. Whether the DHCP server picks an address from the pool or from the reservation list, it's still assigning it dynamically to the client. "Static" is when the client blindly insists on a particular IP address, regardless of whether it's already in use, or outside the range of the network.

While we understand what you are saying, we're just going by the standards. DHCP Reservations are a very real, usable thing. Unfortunately, today (5 Feb 2024), they STILL call it "Fixed IP Address" which is ridiculous. :) But still, I get your point!

I inherited a network (no documentation, of course) that has an existing DHCP server for their network clients. The UniFi devices all have static addresses. The UniFi settings under Network/DHCP Controls has DHCP Mode set to None, Guarding is on with the Trusted DHCP Server 1 set to the network DHCP server. I'm guessing so that WiFi clients use the same scope. This results in some IP conflicts where the UniFi gives out addresses already leased. How can I fix this, or have a segment of the scope range allocated for just WiFi clients? What is DHCP Relay? Thanks for any assistance on this.

Make sure that the scopes don't overlap. Or, turn off DHCP on one of the servers or Unifi.

This probably wont get seen but anyways. Issue I am having is i have 30 devices. I set the dhcp range 1-30 because that is all i need. Say one of those devices breaks and has an ip of .5 and I replace it with a new device, my usg will not give it the .5 ip even though it is no longer being used by the old device. How do i fix this?

Go to the clients tab, look at offline items, and remove the entry for the old device. See if that helps! Sorry for the delay!

hi, i have 7 aps connected to my clients network, but i have a different gateway and dns server address that is provided by the service provider. when i configure the desktops it doesn't give me any problems, but when it comes to adopting the unifi aps, it says adoption failed, so i added a huawei router that assigns ip addresses to the unifi aps. but i want the ip addresses to come from the router installed by the service provider, please assist, thanks

How is it possible that you assigned an IP reservation of 192.168.1.22, when the DHCP server range is defined as 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.254? Seems like a bug in their already clunky implementation.

DHCP Reservations do not have to be inside a scope.
