Just picked up a 45 M winch after researching all the different makes and models. Since there are no dealers in my area within reasonable driving distance, this video was the deciding factor to get the Hudson/Uniforest winch. This video was very well presented and provided an excellent, detailed overview of the setup and operation. The build quality and fit and finish are very good. Also, the winch turned out to be heavier and stouter than appears in the video.

Thank you John for taking the time to put this video together. The owner's manual leaves a lot to be desired. When it becomes necessary I will now know how to adjust the clutch without trying to decipher the manual. I took the PTO cone and plate off in order to reach the drive chain away from the clutch, and lightly oiled it with Lucas non-sling chain lube. The winch is working fine, hope I don't start having problems with slippage.

I purchased a 45M two years ago from my Hudson dealer in Pell City, Alabama. Its been a real workhorse and I enjoy using it. Thank you for making this much needed video as I too found the manual rather lacking. It states the chain tension should be adjusted if needed after the first 10 hours of operation but is not clear on the procedure. It would really be great if you could make another demonstrating how to check and adjust it. Thanks for your help.

Few things… 1) when reassembling the driveshaft make sure yokes are phased correctly. Some shafts only go together one way some do not. 2) lift winch up and down slowly while observing telescoping of pto shaft. Some tractor 3 point geometry shortens shaft while lifting or swinging sideways. 3) hitch is dumb in my opinion. Why not make it a 2” receiver. Not everyone is pulling a pintle hitch log trailer. I made a 2” adapter to use 2” receiver hitches 4) if you have the wireless remote make sure electrical connection is made for US tractor electrical trailer connect.

The supplied hitch did not work for me at all. I fabricated a receiver hitch to mount in the same spot on my winch. It works well.

Very informative video! Been skidding for a few years with mine and it makes quite the difference in a small scale operation. In the video, you were describing the device at the end of the cable (Wedge lock cable holder). Do you have any more information on it or where it can be purchased? I frayed the end of my cable and eventually broke it as we have a ton of rock on our property. Would be great to have as a backup. I am in Ontario Canada.

Would love to see info on that as well. My winch is an older model 35E (predecessor to the 35M) the brake linkage is a bit different. Would love to see some guidance on adjusting and maintaining it.

I have 35 acres of about 7 year old Loblolly pines in the western Florida panhandle in very sandy (soft) soil. Trunks currently vary from 2' to 6". The time is fast approaching when I'll have to thin out these trees. Unfortunately they were planted in a very haphazard fashion (planters must have been enjoying very liquid lunches) leaving no room to drive our tractor (Kubota L6060 Grandcab) through without severely scratching it up and/or breaking glass. I have a small front loader mounted Tree Puller which works OK on trees up to max 4" but struggles with anything larger. I have wondered whether one of your tree skidder winches (with sufficient pulling power) may be used to thin a path through our trees just by pulling them out of the ground. The tallest are around 20' high. One of the problems I've been having with the Tree Puller is the jaws cut into the trunks and the backwards/forwards motion, sometimes necessary to loosen the roots from the soil and pull the tree, slices the smaller ones in two. The tree skidder would be used for literally wrenching young pines out of the ground to create trails wide enough for the tractor to pass through to bush hog very thick Yupon Holly and other tall unwanted shrubbery.

Then your winch is most likely not adjusted properly, or the clutch is glazed. I've used my Uniforest 35E (predecessor to the 35M) and a Farmi 351. Pulling specs are the same, and in actual use they pull the same.

One of the reasons I ended up with the Uniforest winch is because it was less expensive than the alternative brands available in my area. None of the brands are cheap, but if you do any significant amount of work in the woods, once you own one, you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.
