Unimog 404 Axle replacement

The rear axle is making some funny noises,
Looks like it's time to replace it and put in a rebuild axle.
The garage is being rebuild so we have to do this outside, and we only got one weekend to do it all.
Yes, it's going to be a totally professional job.... again.

yea, i worked with Milwaukee on my day-job one time after a Makita tool broke down, and there was such a big difference in power and such i was like this is the brand i'm using from now on. in my opinion it's better than all the other brands i've used so far.

On a bit closer inspection of some of the parts it looks like the internal parts have lots of were and play, so age and usage might have been the instigator of the problems. but i'm still not realy sure.

@@ArmyTruckTom I theorized, that maybe, one piece broke off, and then bounced around the diff breaking the other pieces, before all of them eventually just dropped to the bottom of the diff housing.

Rebuilding the garage takes more time than one would think, so unfortunately we didn't have a lot of time to go to events the last few months. But there are more videos in the making, so stay tuned!

Great video yet again! That new axle probably cost a pretty penny :o At first I was thinking why didn't you replace the shocks at the same time, but with the cost of them axle's I understand completely why :D The fact that possibly none of those broken pieces of the Diff had now wedged in between the teeth is quite remarkable, or maybe they did and that's why there was so many teeth broken?

I ordered the new shocks, so that 'll be in a next video. I'm realy amazed noting realy bad happend as i drove it on the highway just before we found out the problems. only thing i noticed was i slight knocking noise coming from the drive-line, comparable with a worn or dried out u-joint or something like that.

@@ArmyTruckTom Interesting indeed, that it didn't jam up on the highway! That would have required a bit more than just replacing the axle :S Your ride experience should smooth out quite a bit when you replace those shocks, also it might be time to check on the front shocks too, to make sure they aren't totally worn out too!

i think the axle weight is about 250kg, front a bit more so 300kg is my geus on that. the crate off the front axle stated 500kg shipping weight, and the crate itself is bulky so that would make sense.

Je diff is niet goed uitgeshimmed geweest. zie het slijtage patroon.

Ik denk dat het ooit wel goed uitgeshimmed was (as heeft er meer dan 50jaar onder gezeten) maar dat door slijtage de boel uiteindelijk speling heeft gekregen, en daardoor idderdaad niet meer goed uitgeleind was.
