My first 4x4 was a unimog ambulance as well back in 1986.A 404.1 was my model.Biggest issue I think you will find is the hub breather system.Look into it to prolong the diffs life.Look forward to your build and have fun.

That’s really exciting, congrats! We have SO many locations in mind. We’ve been out in the southwest every winter without 4x4 for 8 years in a row now. Our list is a mile long! 🤣

Congratulations! Great purchase! My question to you two is: Why didn't you have the Box build made with an above the cab extension like you see on all consumer Truck Campers? This is where you would place "The Bedroom". I wish you all the best on your build and can't wait to see the final results!!!

You have to tilt the front part of the Unimog / drivers cabin forward to be able to work on the engine like valve adjustment. This means the space above the cabin is blocked. Plus the Mil Mog has a gun hatch which is great when you wanna stand up whilst the driver goes on and take pictures of say an elephant eye to eye… civil Mogs have a square hatch which can be converted to open sideways so you can stand on the gear lever area and watch out as well.

We paid $30,000. They credited us a bit for the consignment of our ambulance box on this as well.

I will follow the adventure, however, this is definitely a niche vehicle. I know it will be a conversation piece, but have to wonder how often you will use it's abilities. I have seen other with specialty vehicles hunt for places to challenge it, but that is not practical other than to produce KZbin videos, which I suppose is a monitory reason to do so...

Will it be possible to have a crawl through between the cab and compartment or is there too much flex for that? I watched "Trueblue travellers" make a DIY one but they didn't have much flex.

Did u do any spring upgrades ? i have a ex Australian army one and i dunno if they upgraded the springs to make them more heavy duty, but its nasty on the back.

I'd guess not too good MPG wise, ballpark 6-10 if your really optimistic. Highway mileage would need to be measured in gallons per mile for sure. Range can be adjusted with more fuel tanks.
