I have zero clue how baccarat works. I kind of figured that the players here are betting on whether "the player" or "the banker" wins, but as for how they "win" is beyond me

Exactly. In the case of this game, you aren't a player, you are a "bettor." You are betting on a player win, a banker win, or a draw. The points are based on the cards. There is no ten point place. So if two cards equal over ten, then you only use the value of the ones place. So a 6 and 9 equal 15, so the value is 5. If the cards equal 10 or 20, then it's just 0.

Basically: You are betting on who will win (player, banker, or you can bet that they will tie) and the closest score to "9" wins. The rules are a bit more complicated on how to achieve a score of 9.
