The Union High School Army JROTC was the very 1st Army JROTC in the state of NJ back in 1981. I am very proud to say that I was a part of that and at that time our instructors were active duty military. We were instructed, taught, drilled and disciplined by Lt. Colonel Touhey and Sargent 1st Class Rayfield. Our AJROTC had the honor of a visit and inspection by a Brigadier General. Having active military instructors was not nor is now the norm for any JROTC. During my time in AJROTC I rose up to the rank of a cadet Lt. To ALL JROTC CADETS IN EACH BRANCH OF THE MILITARY, YOU ARE/WERE IN AN ELITE GROUP and YOU ALWAYS WILL BE. My Army JROTC instructors Lt. Colonel Touhey, Sargent 1st Class Rayfield made the person I am today, a person with pride, respect for self and others but most IMPORTANTLY LOVE AND RESPECT FOR MY COUNTRY. May God Bless each and every JROTC Cadet past, present and future.

Dawn Petruzziello Hi Dawn! You would be pleased to know that the Union HS Army JROTC Battalion remains as great as when you were a member back in 1981. Our Battalion ranks as one of the best in the nation. As a matter of fact we won the national drill championship in 2014 and have finished in the top 5 in the nation over the last 3 years. The program is in good hands with a retired full bird colonel and a retired first sergeant who devote their time to developing it's young men and women cadets into responsible leaders. Please visit whenever you are in the area.

A few critiques: - Commander’s sword manual is wrong. From present back to carry, it should be a 90 degree rotation to the left, and a flip back up onto the shoulder. None of this rotation back to the face stuff is in regulation - Inspection arms should be 5 beats, not 3. 1 & 2 to get to port 3 is open bolt 4 is look down 5 is look back up - Command after inspection arms should be “Port, ARMS”, not “Ready Port, ARMS” - A few rifle grips are incorrect. Should be a ring formed by the thumb and index finger on top, with the heel of the stock between the index and middle fingers. - Double time tempo was too fast. Should be ~180 bpm, and it was closer to 200-220 bpm.
