I'm 75 now but when I was a kid hanging out around the New York Central North Bergen Roundhouse in New Jersey (long one now) watching mechanics doing major overhauls, Diesel locomotives (mostly Alco RS2s) were left idling ll the time. I was told the purpose was to avoid carbon buildup in the cylinders, which makes sense because that was dirtier fuel oil back then. Man, those were he days when a kid could go just about anywhere. These days an adult can't even walk the tracks without being subject to arrest.

Oh, that was way too easy. It's a lot more fun when the engineer has to run around kicking the engine and beating on the turbo with a hammer and the engine responds by coughing and gagging and belching black smoke and smelly diesel fumes that stink up the air in all directions for miles. Now that's how to start an engine!
@LegoWormNoah1015 жыл бұрын
This one's been well maintained, so startup is easy.

How long does it take to build up air pressure?
@ralfie88013 жыл бұрын
Just a few minutes, unless you're charging a whole train, that can take a while, especially if you've only got one locomotive doing the pumping.
@psyclonemedic2 жыл бұрын
On a road vehicle, your typical air compressors are supposed to build up from 0 psi to 120-150 psi in around 6-8 minutes at regular idle, and should go from 80 (Low psi alarm) to 120 in under a minute while operating at speed or fast idle. I imagine that train compressors have similar requirements.
