As a life long train fan. I wonder if everybody else watching had the same tingle from seeing those railroad workers waving...like the little boy I once was, when the pleasure, and love of railroading became more than our dreams? Thanks to all who provided this video that TOOK ME BACK to the early 1960's again.

Every time I hear 844's whistle, I'm reminded of my childhood. My province in Canada operated a steam-powered excursion train from the mid-70s until 1999. Among the districts it passed through was West Vancouver, which has had a ban on train horns since 1958. The steam locomotive, which was CPR #2860 then operated by BC Rail, was the only locomotive that was exempt (along with its backup locomotive). It wasn't just that people didn't mind the steam whistle, they wanted to hear it. One of my two fondest childhood memories is that a couple of times the people of West Vancouver heard #2860's whistle, I was the one who pulled the string. An engineer named Ken Mason gave me a cab ride when I was a 5 year old kid, and he even put me in charge of the whistle. Of course, I could only pull it when he told me to, but to a 5 year old train kid, that was the coolest thing you could possibly imagine. I'm 38 now, and I still remember that day like it was yesterday. On behalf of 5-year-old train kids and 38-year-old train kids everywhere, I want to say thank you to everyone who keeps a few of these magnificent beasts operational. This history is special and should never be forgotten.

Thanks for sharing this great cab-ride on U.P. #844. I was watching the RFD-channel on DISH the other day,and discovered that there is still a Steel-Mill in Pueblo,Colorado that has been in operation for a long time. I hear they use recycled steel now.

Mr. Steve Lee is enjoying his retirement but I am sure he would like to driving the 844 again. Have chased the 844 before and ridden behind her during NRHS convention and it is always a thrilled. We are all waiting to see how the outcome will be with the "611" and NS, would be great to see her back on the rails again. Keep up the good works, it really takes a lot to get this old gals up and running. Thanks

Yeah, I got to ride her across NE on Sept 17 and didn't get squat for decent footage on my camra because it decided to choose that particular day to not work as we were backing around the wye in Bailey Yard *facepalm* But I did get some decent stuff with my digital. ;)
