It's so weird not seeing 844 lead a train. But even the Living Legend has to be modest. Big Boy hasn't been up front in 60 years. It's his time to shine.
@mesenteria5 жыл бұрын
Thiis is an excellent video, with the camera well-metered for the lighting. Nice job. For those new to steam locomotives, you hear a rhythmic hissing much of the way through. What you hear is actually the open 'snifter' valves on the trailing steamer, #844. It is being towed and isn't actually working to help pull the train because they are breaking in the newly restored larger front steamer, the Big Boy. The snifters allow the huge cylinders to 'breathe' when the throttle is closed. The Big Boy has some issues, as the steam blowing past the stuffing box in the right front cylinder shows, and for at least some time the past few days one of the safeties has been leaking. One should be surprised that there isn't more obviously wrong with such a complicated restoration, and full props should go to the gang that did the work. Very impressive.

Actually 844 is helping, because of some issues and BB is new they want to not wear out 4014 too fast so 844 is helping a little, the diesel is doing no pulling.
@stephensmith7995 жыл бұрын
Agree. Amazing that 4014 is very nearly steam tight and adjustments to steam chest stuffing boxes are no more than a minor adjustment. The boilersmithing skills at UP command utmost respect. To be that confident of running specials so soon after release from restoration is amazing but justified. It is hard to find the right words of admiration so I have given up trying. There isn't the language to encompass what Big Boy is and what Big Boy does.

Listen to that jingle, the rumble and that roar...... Steam locomotives are truly alive and if these videos don't bring a tear of happiness in your heart, then you're not human. We might call this locomotive Big Boy, but in my mind " she " is quite literally the most beautiful, most lovely, most gorgeous steam locomotive to ever grace the rails....... Did I mention she is stunning.......🇺🇸🚂🇺🇸🚂🇺🇸
@thejerseyj16365 жыл бұрын
Seeing these two beauty's running down the rails brought more than a tear from my heart. I must admit that I got quite emotional over the sight and sound. Every once in a while Man creates machines that seem to have a soul of their own. The Saturn 5, a great ocean liner, a WW 2 battleship or a modern aircraft carrier for instance. Their size, power and overwhelming "presence" really affect us at times and the Big Boys, the UNION PACIFIC (kudos to them) Big Boys most certainly fit that category. It is also very pleasing that so many people are turning out to view these old Gal's.

Before I even read your summary, I listened to 844's chuffing to determine rpm, then calculated her speed at roughly 43mph. At 80" drivers, she travels 251" per rpm, and at roughly 180rpm, it comes out at 42.8mph. By the time I calculated that, they had slowed down to 120rpm or about 28mph!

well, some areas don't have rails that can handle Big Boy's weight. so those areas are out of luck. Big Boy can't go to Promontory Point for this reason, and has to stay in Ogden.
@davidwhiting17615 жыл бұрын
@@davidjacobs8558 Promontory is inaccessible by rail anyway as they tore out the rail connection after building the causeway over the Great Salt Lake. The only piece of the line left is at the Golden Spike museum where they keep the replicas of Jupiter and 119 for reenactments. Supposedly UP made adjustments to the infrastructure system-wide so that 4014 can tour the whole railroad and she's set to make a system-wide tour after the celebrations in Ogden according to the CEO.

I have paced 844 along US 85 south of Greeley, CO at about 70mph. At that speed the connecting rods are just at the edge of being a blur to the naked eye. Very impressive. I think at that speed 4014's connecting rods would be a blur because the Big Boy drivers appear to be a smaller diameter than 844's and would be at a higher rpm for the same speed.
