back in the early 40s when diesels were first emerging, there were some companies that crafted "Air whistles" which were designed to mimic a steam whistle to combat the harsh sound of a horn.

There are three sounds that I miss from my youth. Non-electronic police sirens, turboprop planes roaring overhead, and the whistle of a steam engine.

The 50s? I mean when you were a youngun? Im only 44, so only using deductive reasoning, & a touch of historical knowledge, but the 50s would have all three of those before the switch to diesel trains,in the 60s. But ...I'm asking not guessing

The fact that UP could get Big Boy running is something a rail fan would never think would be possible but Union Pacific was able to get Big Boy running is a miracle

@@seeber563 To be fair the 1st time they tried to use Oil on the Big Boys they didn't have the tech and engineering we have now. The firebox on 4014 is a work of art and completely bespoke for Oil burning.

Watching this train pass through my town and hearing the whistle was one of the coolest things I ever witnessed.. I felt like I hoped in a Time Machine for just a few minutes those big wheels in motion the eary sound of the horn whistling from a few miles down the track. I know, im a simple man

It was. That's how the Engineer, or Fireman, got All, the black smoke! Overstocking the Firebox, for show. If you feed it properly, you just get white steam. (Doesn't seem as impressive!)
