@@robertluong3024 I call bull on this guy. First of all, Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian are very similar to each other and every Balkan person can understand all of it. Second, his version of Serbian was definitely taught without any deeper understanding cause here basically nobody talks like this, only some wanna be 90s criminals and tough guys from old jokes. I really find it hard to believe that anyone would find someone to practice with that idiotic accent

Yeah, for some languages, seems to know just a few basic sentences, "Like where do you live? Be My friend?" and anything beyond that he doesn't understand. He keep those conversations really short, and then switches to something he does know.
@davorbrijacak
@davorbrijacak 8 ай бұрын
@@milosuz Slight correction, Croatian and Serbian are same language and Macedonian is similar language with partial mutuability. He's Macedonian so his Serbo-Croatian accent is good because of partial mutuability but like you said, it sounds like some 90s urban slang. That being said he's saying many words but without really going anywhere, without much substance. It would be like saying in English: "Well, ya know, I like people here bro, yeah bro, fucken A dude, yeah yeah, you understand bro, yeah, good, come on, lets go dude." Counting Serbian and Croatian as individual language just to artificially pump the number of languages he speaks is very dishonest but most people would never double check it. He can understand Serbo-Croatian better when listening just like I can understand basic Macedonian when listening too but it's different to actually have prolonged and complex conversation, best I can do is to memorize some slang stuff. If I had to speak Croatian and he had to speak Macedonian, we would understand each other for basic stuff for like a minute or so, but it would be so awkward and we would transition to English anyway.

I think a lot of people here missed the point, "unique encounter in 21 languages", they were able to keep a basic conversation with basically full comprehension of what the other person was saying. The glasses-guy made key points; he didn't speak many of these languages for years and is not practicing to switch back and forth. Also he can not find the words in certain languages for speaking, but he has comprehension of even 50+ languages. Some polyglots in history have spoken 100+ languages throughout their life, it doesn't mean they could switch between them all at once. They could "activate" a given language in a few days if they had to travel somewhere specific. That in itself is magic.

How would you know I have heard that Arabic is spoken in so many countries and the difference is so big between some of them that it feels they speak something other than Arabic
@Starlitt
@Starlitt 6 ай бұрын
@@LuchoCastle_11 you got that right, there are a lot of accents and whole dialects scattered around in every Arabic speaking country but almost every single one of them never uses the Classical Arabic accent/dialect (for anyone who grew up in an Arabic speaking language its really easy to know what accent/dialect the other person is using because they grow up watching movies and tv shows made by different countries so really you kind of pick on that just from watching stuff that your parents watch), the only time you would see that being used is when you are in school (and the students barely use any of it either unless they are directly responding/talking to teachers even the teachers don't use it among themselves, unless its a professional environment) or authorities addressing things in councils or on TV as well as cartoons aimed towards children (though i'd like to add that some of them even use accents and dialects of the country that's making the dubbing/made the cartoon, egyptian is most common if I had to say), although rewatching the Arabic segment it seems like Wouter Corduwener was altering between Egyptian Arabic and Classical Arabic which is a bit confusing to listen to, the translation at the bottom screen seem to be wrong as well it was written as "i want to drink something with you: coffee or tea" but what he really said was "I want to drink somethings with you: coffee and tea" so yea that's a little bit of a grammar oopsie there and another thing that got me a bit confused is that his accent is somewhat trying to be egyptian while solely using Classical Arabic dialect, after that sentence he said, when the other person responded I barely understood what he was trying to say, it could be that he meant "you perfected Classical Arabic" which would be in Classical Arabic "ant 'ahsant 'al fashaa" although in Classical Arabic that's not usually how its said and i'd like to add that he butchered the pronunciation of that sentence. the subtitles are exaggerated in the part that follows as well. I'd bet that's pretty much the case in every other dialogue they had but to translate literally what he said in the "i learned modern standard arabic at home with youtube videos and i have a friend" part it pretty much sounds like this in English "I study Classical Arabic home with KZbin and and and (first one is arabic the second two are english) friends" in Arabic "انا ادرس الفصحى البيت مع يوتيوب و اصدقائي" so yeah that pretty much what that was, i'd like to add that the other person barely spoke any coherent words and even the ones he did utter were all over the place like his last "thanks a lot" "thanks" was Classical Arabic Dialect. In contrast "a lot" was Algerian and Moroccan (those are in the North African region) sadly they only spoke Arabic in this video, they were about to speak Japanese so I would've liked to know how well they faired but they didn't. but yeah their Arabic was as awful as you would expect from a jack of all trades. Sorry about the essay but figured i'd at least explain this thoroughly for other people who are interested in learning more about this.

Japanese and Spanish for example convey very little information while German is on the other end of the spectrum, that's why Japanese and Spanish are spoken much faster than German such that the infomation flow is pretty much constant for all languages. That might be why they seem to speak so much more calm. Grüße aus Deutschland =)

I'm European and I recently visited a Brazilian restaurant here in the UK. I'm not confident enough with PT yet, but of the few words I used to communicate such as please and thank you etc. the waiters all initiated full-on conversations with me because I have a Santa Catarina, BR accent as opposed to a Portugal accent - they assumed I was fluent. Embarrassing because I swiftly reverted back into English when they bombarded me with 30 PT words I couldn't process 😂

I’ve had several encounters with people that say they want to practice their Spanish and the only phrases they know are generic friendly phrases like: “Hola, amigo” and “me gusta tus zapatos” or “yo hablo un poco Español” which isn’t bad at all if you really want to learn they are great stepping stones to build up from there.

As someone who can speak both spanish and portugues the beginning was hilariously dumb and very awkward. The conversation was not nature at all they basically kept interrupting each other like it was a cringey competition. They repeated the same phrases over and over and responded sometimes before the other person finishes which made it seem unnatural. The guy that said he could do 5 spanish accents made a fool of himself. He has one accent which is gringo speaking beginner level spanish. Dude in the hat was a bit less cringey. Anyways, i stopped the video after portuguese because it was pointless.

So everyone knows...that "Mandarin" is UNFATHOMABLY bad. That's not "speaking" it. That's badly parroting things you can't even pronounce correctly rather than directly answering each other. Here's how it went: "Ni hui shuo zhongwen ma?" (can you speak Chinese?) "Wo jiao shenme mingzi is ok - What's my name is ok" (huh?) "Ni jiao shenme mingzi?" (what's your name?) "wo jiao?" (pointing to him - incorrect subtitle suggests he's asking HIS name but actually he - badly - says "I'm called?" which is not proper at all) "wo jiao Wouter ke shi wo de zhongwen mingzi shi "wo de"" (I'm called Wouter but my Chinese name is "mine", if you literally translate) "Shi, shi! de" (yes, yes - this is not how you'd express "ok, ok" - "shi ma?" would be maybe better to ask "oh it is?", but "shi, shi" doesn't MEAN anything by itself here) "ni hui shuo hen duo zhong guo hua *noises that even my native speaking wife can't understand follow" (you can say a lot of Chinese language *jibberish*) *makes weird noise in response - "shi...wo, wo, wo, wo shi " (am...I, I, I, I am...then he switches to Dutch) "women yi qi keyi shuo hanyu gen wo de zhong guo pengyou zai Amsterdam, wo you hen duo zhong guo pengyou" (we can speak Chinese with my chinese friends in Amsterdam, I have a lot of Chinese friends" - pronunciation issues aside, this is not proper grammar and he attempts a word order that you'd get with English and its related languages) "wo qu pengyou Harlem" (I GO to a friend Harlem? His pronunciation is SO bad that once again, both me and my native speaking wife - btw I live in China and have been speaking it for nearly 20 years - were perplexed) "Oh, hui shuo putonghua...uh...Shanghai kouyin haishi beifang kouyin" (the first part is eaten by the wind - then he says "can Mandarin, ***wind*** Shanghai accent or northern accent? - not too bad here) "Dui, shi de" (Right, it is/that's it) "zheme liihai" (so great) "yeah," "*wind* shi pengyou ma?" (are we friends?) "yeah, hao qi hao qi" (um....sure, buddy, if you want to pretend you said something you go right ahead...WAIT....was he trying to say "hao CHI?" as in, "tasty"? Your FRIENDSHIP IS DElICIOUS BRO" wtf, STOP PRETENDING! "wo feichang xihuan ni" (I really like you) "wo...eh...wo, xiang qu zhongguo yinwei wo xiang shuo putonghua *jibberish* hao...uh...he wo ya feichang xihuan hen duo difang zai zhongguo, uh, feichang hao kan" (I...eh...I want to go to china because I want to speak Mandarin good, uh, with, I ya really like many places in China, uh, very good looking" Then they switch to another language. Notice the issue here? The answers do not match up at all with the questions. It is very obvious that Wouter, while his Chinese level in this video is QUITE low - maybe HSK2, at best - with many grammar and pronunciation mistakes, is AT lEAST able to form some sentences where a Chinese speaker CAN tell what he's trying to say, but the OTHER guy is just speaking jibberish and it is instantly obvious that he has NO idea what he's hearing and is winging it. He sounds like someone who literally spent 30 minutes on Duolingo, while Wouter at least sounds like he spent a month or so on Duolingo. The other guy OBVIOUSLY cannot speak Chinese AT ALL, while Wouter can use some very elementary pieces of it (and he admits to the need to improve, so points for that). I just want people to understand EXACTly what is going on for those of you who have NO level in Chinese or are just starting out. The other guy is PRETENDING to respond with less than 10 words he picked up. In fairness he never claimed fluency but he's not having ANY sort of two-way conversation because he's incapable of understanding any of it, which means it was a pointless "conversation" to have. You have one side who is putting out questions and the other guy responds with nonsense non-answers like "yeah, right, that's right....uh, uh, I I I I ...I am...." That first part alone, OUCH. "Can you speak Chinese?" "What's your name is ok" - "What's your name?" "I'm called?" "I'm Wouter" - SO cringe, man. My POINT is, don't DO that if you don't really speak it - because it's GOING to be obvious to ANYONE with a real conversational level in it.

As someone who learns and I guess speaks 5 languages (Czech, English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese), I both agree and disagree with a lot of the comments. I don't appreciate people just straight-up roasting them when they're still learning, because that's what discourages people from having the confidence to practice and improve on languages. However, I do think that they should focus on quality rather than quantity when speaking languages. I'm probably not going to try learn any more languages than I'm learning now, just so I can focus on the quality, because I feel they've started learning some of these languages, but gotten bored and started new ones, so it's not really the greatest standard.

What’s your technique to learning new languages. I only speak 3 languages pretty fluently. English Spanish and Portuguese. I didn’t actually learn any of them like studying wise I just grew up with these language cus of my parents. So I don’t know how to learn a language. I’m really interested in learning Japanese because I plan on visiting Japan and I want to be able to communicate and be immersed in the culture and beauty there
@rinalaskaa
@rinalaskaa 3 жыл бұрын
@@BenjaJohnsonIII I'm from the Czech Republic, but have grown up in Australia and still live in Australia, so that's how I speak Czech and English. I started learning Spanish at the age of three, because my mother's friend was starting up a Spanish school, and my mother wanted to help with the business. I also continued Spanish all throughout school. The first language that I started learning on my own accord was Korean. My main motivation behind learning this was all my close Korean friends in primary school. To maintain this motivation, I would watch KZbin videos in Korean, and also Disney movies dubbed in Korean with Korean subtitles. Even after moving to a different city, I would keep in contact with my Korean friends online and over phone calls, challenging myself by speak to them solely in Korean. In terms of Chinese (Mandarin), I began learning it at school, and what kept me motivated was the fact that I wanted to achieve an A grade. However, I would also motivate myself by watching Chinese videos on Youku (Chinese KZbin), as well as listening to Chinese radios. Nonetheless, I would consider Chinese my worst language of the five, because I don't think I really approached it with much of a technique. Anyways, my advice from all this would be to challenge yourself by immediately immersing yourself in the language. Even before learning the Japanese alphabets (I think there are three), listen to a lot of Japanese (anime, or if you don't like anime, then KZbin videos or Disney movies dubbed in Japanese). After learning the alphabet, immediately challenge yourself with stories in Japanese, gradually reaching a higher level. I would also recommend reading these stories out loud to help with both pronunciation and improving reading speed. Lastly, I got this advice from a Polyglot friend, but once you get a basic grasp of the language, change one of your device settings into Japanese, as it is an environment that you would be used to, so you will understand what the settings are from muscle memory, further improving your Japanese vocabulary. Sorry this turned out to be an essay haha, but I wish you the best of luck with your language learning :)

Tbh it seems like they're very or at least kinda fluent in the western langs like the germanic and balkan ones but they can barely speak the eastern ones like korean etc, which isn't surprising at all since most (all?) European langs have a common root but eastern langs like Japanese and Korean barely have any siblings (if at all) so multi eastern langs is way harder than multi western langs, especially if you're western.

If Danes speak slowly and articulate, I can understand them too, but generally I can't.

How to be a Polyglot: 1. Learn how to say _Lets be Friends_ in at least 15 languages and 7 local dialects;, 2. *a a a a a a a a a a a*

Jonas Fernades Well it depends if you wanna talk smalltalk without knowing hardass grammar and you have a good ear for languages, I don’t think it’s to hard tbh. I grew up in southeast Austria near the Slovenian border and growing up I spend a lot of time in a Serbian-Croatian Diaspora, learned Latin and Spanish at school, Greek(also writing) some Turkish some Slovenian and Croatian from friends. If you speak a little Serbian or Croatian you can also communicate with Bosnians and now im taking chinese classes in university (where I also learn Kanji the japanese Chinese alphabet and now I teach myself some japanese in my free time). So I can pull of a hey how are you let’s get a beer convo in about 12 languages but I only really know 2 (Austrian German and English)

It's like you're joking, but that is actually a legitimate step that you should take. This isn't the only path, but it is a path. 1. Learn to introduce yourself and have very brief conversation in several languages, especially taking note of the name of each language you want to speak in each language. I hope that makes sense. 2. Of the languages you have learned your likely broken conversational skills, choose the one you like the most (for whatever reason: convenience, how much it makes sense to you, how much it will be useful in the future, how many speakers of that language will also speak other languages you want to learn.) 3. Strive to improve your chosen language, either to the point of conversational adequacy, or even fluency if you so chose. 4. Choose another language to improve upon. 5. Not really a step, just a note: if you are in a location where many languages are spoken, many people will take note of your interest, and they may help you to learn something new. Just like the guy in this video does, by answering questions in languages that Wouter does not speak, but is able to partially understand. I think a lot of people overestimate the difficulty, and underestimate the importance of that first step. Before I really became fluent in Spanish (my 2nd language) I was very concerned that attempting to learn Portuguese would confuse me as I was studying French at the time, since we all know these languages have much in common. But I made up my mind to just learn some basic conversational skills to introduce myself, buy a beer, ask someone for help, and especially ask people if they speak a language I'm closer to fluency in. I've been able to do this in 4 languages where I'm not fluent (at varying levels,) and I'm just waiting on the opportunity to try the 4 I haven't had a chance with in person. It's actually easier I think, the more languages I learn even rudimentary things about, the better my ear gets at picking things up. An extra edit because why not: There are a LOT of ways to study languages. Consuming media in that language, a tutor, an online class, an app. Everything works differently for everyone, but I heavily recommend that you find native speakers who you can voicechat with about a mutual interest. There are a lot of online communities out there. Like Italian? Like trains? There's some Italian people out there just dying to talk about trains. Well I assume, I haven't checked into Italian Train communities specifically.

@@jonasfernades241 Eu aprendi um pouco de portugues. Acho do brasil. Quero entender um pouco. I speak Spanish and a little French. Facilita a compreensao And an edit: I don't really want to learn Portuguese, because it seems that a lot of Portuguese speakers speak English or Spanish. I do find Portuguese interesting, but my motive for learning Portuguese is to be able to introduce myself, and hopefully understand more than I can speak myself. I'm more interested in learning Mandarin and Arabic, because I can communicate with more people who don't speak languages I already know.

Man.. his croatian was sleng based, with little things like "eating" letters, like "kuiš" which is short for "kužiš" which is informal "razumiješ".. he could learn that only from a lot of conversations and not from courses on internet. We have 7 grammatical cases for each word and he didn't miss any.. Listening to him as a native I wouldn't think he's foreigner, just a guy from some hood from outskirts of Zagreb..
