Dantorp doesn't say that this is turbulence video - he simply says there's wake turbulence upon landing. It's hardly noticeable, but there are often eddies when approaching Newark's runway from the south.
@wotan109509 жыл бұрын
I assume you don't have a dictionary, so I'll copy the relevant portion: turbulent flow can be realized as a superposition of a spectrum of flow velocity fluctuations and eddies upon a mean flow. The eddies are loosely defined as coherent patterns of flow velocity, vorticity and pressure. Turbulent flows may be viewed as made of an entire hierarchy of eddies

I was about to say. The title is mis-leading. I using say that because Delta and Continental are the only two airlines that have purchased the 767-400ER. Delta uses them as a replacement for the L-1011 on high-density routes, however more and more are being used for long-haud and int'l flights. As far as Con, I know they are/were used on the HNL flights and were known for the best dom service to Hawaii.

Wake turbulence is when a plane takes off to close and gets caught in the wake. That happened to me once. The plane will have a slight side to side roll when becoming airborne.

No expert here but a great video. I love how the flaps do their thing. And keep wondering how that little flap keeps turbulence at bay, or does it?
@paulbaird2059 жыл бұрын
John O'Connor (wikipedia) Flaps are devices used to alter the lift characteristics of a wing and are mounted on the trailing edges of the wings of a fixed-wing aircraft to reduce the speed at which the aircraft can be safely flown and to increase the angle of descent for landing. They shorten takeoff and landing distances. Flaps do this by lowering the stall speed and increasing the drag.

It's a good thing this wasn't am American Airlines flight. 587 showed that before 587's crash, the airline taught to use severe rudder input to escape wake turbulence!
@crsvetteii175310 жыл бұрын
Not really. Wake turbulence is avoided, not escaped, if you understand (1) that wakes follow wind direction (i.e. they "blow away") and (2) sink at a predictable rate. That is one of two reasons for separation criteria built into approach sequencing.

@OhPoWneDiel9 жыл бұрын
can someone explain to me what different sections of the wing do. it looks very interesting
@patrickdroney44439 жыл бұрын
OhPoWneDiel The larger sectons on the trailing, or "back" part of the wing are the flaps. These provide more lift at slower speeds and are deployed fully for landing and partially for takeoff. The smaller "flap" between the larger flaps is the aileron. This helps the plane directionally, along with the rudders. Finally, the flaps on the top of the wing are spoilers....this helps slow the airplane down both in flight and once it lands (along with reverse thrust). Hope that helps. There are also slats on the front of the wing (not visible) that assist with lift for both takeoff and landing. Basically they along with the flaps gives more surface area to the wings.
@OhPoWneDiel9 жыл бұрын
Pat Droney thanks a lot! it appears that when the smaller flaps are pointed down, the wing will lift, and vice versa

Wake turbulence is quite real. The seperation minimums required aren't designed to keep you from hitting it, just to ensure you don't flip over. Unfortunately I've been slapped sideways at 20,000 feet from a heavy 777. It happens.

Hey, good nite, mr. Dantorp, thanks a lot again for such a delicious vídeo..!! It makes me remind me, for instance, when I am flying from Campo Grande (Brazil West) to Rio de Janeiro, Santos Dumont airport...( sometimes landing at Congonhas airport, São Paulo, Brazil) I most of the time fly thru Gol Airlines, they operate with 737-800..!! I noticed that when landing the 767-400 engine sounds is kind of different from 737-800..! Wish we had such a great airports you have over there in América..!! I am concerned about this world cup on june..! The airports in Brazil should get better and better..!! Thank you very much, I do love all your planes vídeos..who needs music when you can enjoy that wonderful engine sounds..?! God bless you..!!

Well, good pilots because they are "legacy" Continental. (JK) Even though the "merger" happened on paper, the legacy United and CAL crews continued to operate their original equipment, and the 764 was original CAL (I should know, I retired there). Now there is a single ALPA pilot contract, sometime in the Fall of 2013 it was signed. However, as usual, there are restrictions on what the two pilot groups can bid regarding their equipment choices, and of course this relates to seniority integration as well. However, I saw *no* "wake turbulence" (note the proper spelling, please). The landing was on Runway 4R, and depending on the wind direction and velocity it was common to get some turbulence at that point, this is from wind blowing across surface features, like buildings or those cranes near the harbor. This is termed "mechanical turbulence"...the word "mechanical" refers to the "mechanism" of air being disrupted by obstructions as it flows along the Earth surface.

@StratMatt77710 жыл бұрын
CRsVette II 8:56 ?
@crsbeem82810 жыл бұрын
StratMatt777 Hardly. First, typically, only aircraft that are lighter than the preceding aircraft are at significant risk of wake turbulence. Second, the miniscule wing wobble at 8:56 is hardly representative of wake turbulence effects. Remember, REAL wake turbulence can invert a lighter aircraft. This is a 767 that barely departs from dead level.
