Whenever given a choice I tend to choose an Asian airline not only for their cabin flight service but also for their Asian meals. I'm one of those Asians whose stomach is not full if I have not eaten an Asian meal 🙂.

United actually has pretty nice seats in Polaris, but the food service is an absolute joke - especially if you are comparing to good Asian airlines (Asians, SIA, etc.). I am sure United is using COVID as an excuse for the joke of a food service, but the reality is that, after actually making a good effort when Polaris launched, they started cutting back long before COVID. I.e. the chocolates given out with the boarding drink and just before landing went away after about a year, and also the wine-tasting service also quietly disappeared around the same time. I fear that COVID will be used as the excuse for crappy food service for the next decade. Just as 9/11 was used by US airlines for about ten years to excuse themselves from really having ANY decent focus on service (i.e. “we are here for your safety, and that’s it”)

United has been using Covid as an excuse ever since the start of the pandemic. The food choices have been even more miserable than usual. You don’t usually get any pre-flight drinks, and they don’t honor meal requests. They stopped all international meal requests in first class all together and all that’s usually left is chips and wine. Pathetic.

Thank you for watching. Recently, I watched some positive reviews about their POLARIS business class on KZbin, so I wanted to try it for my first experience with it. But, unfortunately, the service and food was not good.. I regretted my choice after this flight. :(

I’m a United Airlines flight attendant…… IM SO SORRY!! I really wish that our company focused a little bit more on service especially on the international flights. I’ve read a lot of comments on this video and I have to agree that nothing stands up to a lot of Asian airlines and the quality of service that they provide. Hopefully someday soon United will put the resources into the service the way that we are all asking for it.🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️

I wholeheartedly agree. I used to fly United Airlines from Tokyo to Washington in economy. Before the plane took off, the pilot declared over the loudspeaker that the luggage compartment doors must be closed. Many doors are open, but no flight attendants are visible. After all passengers on aisle seats stood up and closed the compartment doors. During the flight i need water to take medication, but I don't want to wake up the guy who was sleeping next to me. I then requested assistance by ringing the bell. I rang again after five minutes with no response, then again... nothing happened. I turned around and looked in the rear gallery to see if there were any helpers. I saw that when I rang the bell, it was shut off by a flight attendant. She gazed at me, waiting for another ring to turn out the light. What kind of game was she playing? I was surprised to see that most fly attendants are in the 50’s or older. I guess they are chosen because of seniority instead of performance. As I wrote to UA’s customer service about the incident I reminded them what happened to American automobile industry back in the 80’s. You might have noticed that the majority of automobiles on city streets are built in the United States; how many can you find nowadays? If UA does not make significant adjustments, the same thing will happen.

Recently flown UA from Narita to Newark, business class, on a codeshare flight with ANA, and it was the worst flight ever for me! I usually don’t care much about plane food, so it didn’t really matter much to me. But the crew was really rude, don’t understand much what service is all about. Never again,United!!!

That's a general rule. Only done a few times business class, service tends to be bad. My brother for work they do pay all trips business class, he says in general service in US carriers is not really great and food can be very bad

As someone who is in Chicago, United is the big player. I really never chose them when I was traveling for work 15 years ago. Now being interested in international travel and watching a ton of youtube videos, I see that U.S. carriers are far inferior to most foreign. That is a shame.

Sad but unfortunately not unexpected. United really loves to cheap out wherever possible. I hate that almost all good international flights from my location are United flights - and I'm getting more and more ok with traveling 2 hours to another airport to have access to ANA, EVA, Cathay, etc for 12-16 hour flights.

Bad food is a given in the US, where heavy sauces and gobs of cheese pass for "good food". Read about the horrendous food that Sergei Witte wrote about when he negotiated the end of the Russo Japanese War at Portsmouth NH. The food was courtesy of Teddy Roosevelt. There is a long tradition of serving bad food in the US.

On many US airlines, "class" has less meaning than on some of the better foreign airlines. If I had shelled out the money for business class I would have been very disappointed in this flight.

hospitality is always better in Asia be it hotel or airplane travel. In Asia, service members are better trained. In US, the only place that shine in hospitality sector is restaurants. That's because your waiter/ waitress depends on tips so they go out of their ways to be nice. If American based airline flight attendants' pay is 50% base on tips, then their service will level up. When flying internationally to or from US, always pick Asian airlines when possible. Jet Blue flight attendants in US consistently have great attitude. With other US airlines, it's a hit or miss.

Pretty much. United has been going down that route for years now. The first Economy Plus seat I sat in was great and I was glad I didn't need Business/First. The last Economy Plus seat I saw in was basically a coach seat. Even this new "Polaris" service, its a merging for Business/First simply for cost cutting.

Ugggh what a disappointment. Sorry you wasted your resources on that not so good experience. I agree with other travelers, if you're flying intl, it's best to fly on a non-American carrier. The attention to any detail does not exist. It's very sad. These US airlines have not learned a single thing from foreign carriers to up their A game. They're still stuck at an F rating IMO. Here's the sad part, the amenity kits between "Polaris Business" and their "Premium Economy" has the exact same contents, the only difference is the cheap pouches they use. To shell out $6K USD for a Polaris seat is ridiculous when the amenities they offer is inferior. To not be given any special service for choosing United Polaris, to not be addressed by your surname, no sense of customer service even when handing out bottled water is so shameful. United used to have a sundae bar, now it's just a piece of choco pie, gees, United can't even provide a slice of cheesecake? No quick bites, such as a ramen bowl in between meal service? Just not worth paying the cost on this inferior business product.

I booked my elderly parents ICN-SFO on Polaris so they can travel comfortably. My father had a little bit of difficulty understanding the flight attendant so, the flight attendant got annoyed, snapped and put my father down. So what was suppose to be a treat turned into a nightmare and my parents traveled the whole way wo even being able to utilize the media. United Polaris never again.

I was on Newark to Cape Town last week round trip Polaris. There definitely was a lack of effort. No menus? Yep on the return flight. Its not a huge deal but the food was definitely disappointing for a 15 hour flight. I could only guess what they get on coach. I have flown Asian carriers, European carriers etc all over the world. United made such a huge deal about Polaris and in the end the Polaris lounge was one of the best perks.

I agree - have watched their quality of service decline over the years. I still fly United because they have a nonstop from Newark to Honolulu (10 1/2 hour flight westbound)). However, when I recently flew JetBlue mint to LA, the food and service was excellent. The other great frustration is that the long flight to Honolulu, being domestic, does not get near the quality of service that a shorter trans-atlantic flight would receive. Additionally, Polaris service is not available on the flight, so standard business class must suffice. Argh!

When I fly to my favorite vacation destination the Beautiful Philippines I fly all non North America airlines. I always look forward to your videos 😊

Flew Polaris from SIN to SFO last month and I think they've improved significantly! Food menus is now provided and they actually had very good Singaporean cuisine as tapas that you can order anytime during the flight. Crew are usually more senior compared to Asian carriers but personable.

It perplexes me how United can maintain this poor level of quality in the face of competition. I've been on Emirates and American in First/Business Class in the last six months and they are providing full service. United wants to keep using the excuse of the pandemic but it's wearing thin. The single tray service, the lack of menus, the rushed service is not a health issue - it's a cost savings issue. Also, my theory is that the flight attendant union is behind this. The senior (and I'm talking often senior citizen) flight attendants aren't concerned about service. They want to flop down the food, go about chit chatting in the galley and then get to their international destination so they can go shopping.

You are exactly correct on all counts. I think all American carriers have the same issue, and they only compare themselves with each other, so it is a race to the bottom. Same thing happened after Sept 11, 2001. All US carriers pretended that ONLY safety mattered, and they used this as an excuse for a decade.

I am limited to flying United for domestic and International. Polaris is nothing to write home about especially the meals. You should have selected one of the other 2. Meals on foreign carriers are better. Those freebies travel kit are cheap and made in China. Yes they come around and drop the water bottle whether your like it or not

I agree, Polaris is NOT the product that I expected either. I flew with them from Chicago to London and From Tokyo to LA in business and the crew and service on board were always way "simpler" than the competition. BTW that desert that you had in the ICN to SFO (Choco) was the same in Economy. So not worth what they charge for the plane ticket.

Having lived in Korea for 18 years now (originally UK) I think I've been spoiled with Korean and other Asian carriers whose service and product far outshines US airlines in every way and some major European airlines. Flying to USVI from BKK taking United and AA via SFO and Miami, was the worst flying experience of my life. Long story but never forget. Your flight was Economy with a business class price. I will be traveling sometime in February 2023 with this same flight.. I feel like 10 hour flight is just way too long for me to be in economy. Was it a full flight when you travelled? I would never choose a US carrier if an Asian one is competative. Recently flew United Business, Houston to Narita on United Polarus, same seat 11A on United frequent flyer miles. My first choice would have have been an Asian carrier

I've had a similar experience on the Polaris in a 15h flight in a super busy and expensive route. The service, food and cabin conditions (dirty) were appalling. In comparison, I had much more food (and in amazing quality) on a 3h flight with Austrian. United should step up their game as premium passengers are going to skip them.

Unfortunately United crews seem to do the bare minimum they can get away with. Remember when they launched Polaris with such fanfare and the multiple wine tasting and complimentary chocolates before takeoff. I knew at the time it wouldn’t last. And so here we are today with everything dumped on one tray and you get your pre dinner champagne after your meal has been served. Go United!!

Just flew long haul United Polaris and Singapore business in a span of 7 days. United seat is nice and that's where it ends. Singapore blew them out of the water in the service, food and beverage departments. Singapore does the multi course meal service and extensive beverage menus. Comparatively, feels like United flight attendants are doing you a favor when they help you out. Singapore attendants are extremely courteous willing to help

I'm looking at UA Polaris for ICN-IAD, connection in SFO for $5,500. It's $2k more expensive to go with a direct 14-hr flight from ICN to IAD via Korean Air, $7,500. Rats. Wondering if its worth it.

I bought ANA roundtrip tickets for Oct from Manila to Raleigh-Durham business class with layover in Chicago (via ANA) and flying back, thru Houston (via their codeshare United). Initially, I thought this was good. I’ll get to experience 2 airlines’ business class. I’ve been watching video reviews on the Polaris class (I dont need to watch ANA videos, I’ve tried them in the past though Eco seats and they are GREAT! It’s an Asian airline anyway). But after watching your video, I’m sad/anxious/nervous about riding UA. Is there anyway I could call ANA and tell them I don’t want to fly UA going back to Manila???

Its no surprise that the food was disapointing, I have flown a few times first class and the portions are to small and you cant get seconds

As someone from Chicago, I have to admit this video is truly embarrassing for us to watch. The food and the presentation seem to be lacking in both quality and style. And the service seems borderline rude - that stewardess sounded less professional than a high school lunch lady.

No menu card (not even e-menu) is a huge disappointment. I also agree with you on the Choco Pie. I love Lotte's Choco Pie but to serve that as part of a Biz Class meal is not very appropriate. I guess the saving grace for this flight is the amenities kit. It does look quite sleek in its design.

The truth is that the 3 major airlines in the USA (AA, D, UN) are all just as bad, the services on board... not to say that they are horrible.

For international business especially to Asia, I would choose US airlines as last option. And no way would I pay a premium for US airlines. I choose them based on time of flight and price. For the same price I would fly ANA everytime. Asiana is also not comparable to ANA but its way better than united IMO.

The amenity kit's design looks quite elegant. However, the two meals look disappointing indeed. These are, at best, Premium Economy class meals; they are definitely not on par with Business Class meals served on other major airlines. Anyway, thanks for another excellent sharing! 🥂

It is pretty sad business class. I always try to fly with foreign airlines. That is because my experience in First Class (in 2009) on the way from LAX to LHR. On the way back, I took First Class Lufthansa.

The thing with United is that The seats in Polaris are great, top of the line in terms of American long haul carriers, but the service itself is lacking.

I would have found that announcement quite disconcerting. I was hoping for a followup explanation, but of course if it was just a sick passenger likely no explanation would be given to the other passengers. If asked, the cabin crew would probably give as little information as possible.

Regrettably, most US carriers lack the Business Class acumen and bedside detail that most Asian carriers deliver with grace and flair. There is a considerable difference in the caliber of employee attention to detail between the two. I also seem to think that the cultural aspect of providing genuine service and hospitality is another aspect where Asian carriers overwhelmingly prevail.

A Choco Pie for dessert in a business class meal? They must have been choking! I've flown UA once, and like you, I had a terrible crew and meal experience. However, I admit that I like their hard product. UA's B787 have a new and modern-looking cabin

I usually fly Polaris during transcon flights across the US-not stellar, but certain,y more comfortable than economy. However, I have a choice of UA or an international carrier for a trip to Europe…and I think my mind’s just been made up.

No US carrier have any business flying anywhere near Asia and Middle East. They are simply not competitive with both their soft and hard products. Embarrassing will be an understatement.
