This is a destruction test, people... To see how much you can beat on a knife, in all the wrong ways, before it fails. I appreciate vids like this, because it cures my curiosity. I would never put a knife through this kind of abuse, but I'd know it would hold up more than well, in reasonable usage, situations. Keep up, with the extreme tests! Although, as he admits, he didn't mean to break it, where he did. LOL

@waldschnepfe9673
@waldschnepfe9673 7 жыл бұрын
This is a classic constructional defect of the knife. The tang becomes to small in the handle and this leads into two (superimposed) effects: 1. The section modulus is much much reduced. Since it's a quadratic function maybe 20% left. 2. The cross section reduction causes a notch effect in addition. You can see at the point of break a force ruptur, which is confirming that assessment. I guess a lot of sturdy looking cheap knifes have that issue if you look into the handle ( for e.g. my Walther P38 Knife also). Illuminative test BFG!

The hammers impact (repeated hammering) on the blade was straight into the area it broke, a invalid test in my opinion the blade in combat or blocking would never have broken like that. His beating on it and hitting the guard straight down is what broke it. You can break any blade if you try even 5160. True test is how it functions doing the things it was designed to do. But he is shaved head too so we are brothers.

BlackForest, under the conditions which you were using the knife it should have not failed. If you had hit it on the handle, that would have been a different, but since you hit it on the blade, all the handle had to stand was the vibration and the force of your hand as you held it, I would let United review the video, and ask for a replacement. I think you are justified in doing so, and I am a licensed mechanical engineer.
@norpino7704

That was meant to be like a combat knife not a utility knife. Alsowhy would you use a knife to split wood, thats what an axe is meant for. And don't tell me that you would use knife to chop wood in a emergency/survival situation, I know you would use one for that but not that type of knife. You would use a knife that was meant for that like the pathfinder knife that Dave Canerberry uses. Every tool has a certain task it was meant for and it excels at that task but not other's. A utility knife is meant for day to day use, a survival knife is meant to take a beating and can replace most other cumbersome tools in a survival situation, a combat knife is meant to protect yourself while in a battle and to kill your opponent/animal.

Its not the steel but the design and heat treatment... or lack of it. If you notice the tang, even doe it's full tang it's a rat tail tang cut in a T shape. That creates a huge weak point right at the handle. Rat tails must be rounded and progressive (like the one on the cold steel tanto) in order to remain strong.

best video regarding the Honsu Tanto...the problem is not the use of 440A steel...most probably, it's the not so good heat treatment. Randall knives and Bowies are sometimes made of 440A, so nothing wrong with the steel used. Poor heat treatment job on the part of United.

Would you trust this knife in a combat self defense situation?
@ezraa123
@ezraa123 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for posting this. I'm in agreement that these kinds of tests are nice to do. If it were strictly a combat knife, I would expect a thinner and lighter blade possibly a full flat grind to make it light yet stiff to move fast and still have good penetration. This is kind of a beast, not as good for quick combat but the kind that would be expected to function as both a combat knife and survival knife in situations where you are out "warring" for awhile. it should be able to baton fine or it's not any kind of a real functional knife of this type. it would have been just as good to have a smaller and thinner one that would be expected to not hold up. The tang was thick enough that if it was tempered correctly it should not have broken. I know it's a reduced tang to allow for the handle to be more comfortable and stylish but it was still pretty thick. I have a sword made out of 5160 spring steel that has a reduced tang like that that I've beat the crap out of (it's a tinker blunt trainer) and it's still together, even after beating a hard dry wood post. Unfortunately, quality control with some manufacturers is not so good and the mass production does not include very good and consistent normalizing of the steel to make sure they are as tough as they should be. So, thanks for the hard testing.

If you think Samurai took their tantō made from tamahagane and used it like a camp tool you are either delusional or uneducated. Samurai were warrior nobles. Their steel was made to kill and kill only not perform lumber milling tasks. Around the world steel weapons broke in battle frequently. That why warriors everywhere started out with a two handed pole arm like a spear, then an axe or sword then a dagger or knife. If one of your larger weapons breaks or becomes unusable draw your shorter weapon and close distance. Samurai were not out doing field work or camp tasks with the steel it took 90+ days to make and cost more than 10 serfs/slaves.
@JessicaVinnosa
@JessicaVinnosa 9 ай бұрын
@@phillipmargrave Not delusional at all. The video doesn't show a historical weapon. In fact, he mentioned it was not as thin and quick as a combat knife, the kind a Samurai warrior would likely have had. It's a modern, overbuilt, blade that should have held up just fine doing that. Even more so considering it's made from modern material and heat treat methods. I get what you're saying about multiple weapons and things breaking. But this video was testing THIS blade that should have been fine taking this kind of abuse if it's well made. If it breaks with this kind of use, just give me a lighter and better balanced one that will only be used for defense and light work rather than that heave monstrosity.

actually i do not see it as a fail. since its creating samurai never EVER used the tanto to slice wood, as a matter of fact they saw it disgraceful and damaging to such a majestic weapon. it is foolish to use a weapon thats soul use is for defense to strike it with such a brutish intent and that is why it broke. if you were to stress test it against a high resin analog skeleton body and jell casings or hell even pig carcass this video would be 4 times as long.

I always wonder when people take a knife and do things like batoning wood which are not the knives intended purpose? ANY knife will break if you hit it enough and bend it enough no matter what the marketing of the product says? If you have a knife which holds a good edge for a long while then the steel is probably quite hard, but it will also be more brittle than a blade which doesn't hold an edge as long but is more flexible? This is the nature of steel! Use an axe or hatchet for chopping wood!

KA-Bar (same cost - same purpose) Could probably have passed this test, and that's a combat knife :) Granted, I think the video maker was abusing his knife, I never would have tried to split a log of this size, not even with a rubber mallot (wood might actually be better for battoning, because rubber has a little bounce to it, and wood just deforms), But abuse tests need to be done from time to time, especially on combat and survival knives. Good vid.

Obviously, it's going to break when you used a mallet to baton with it. I want to see how it performs and how long it lasts when used properly. I don't baton at all, I think it's a very stupid concept and a fairly recent one at that. I have tons of knives, cheap and expensive, you know why they last?? Because I use them for what they are intended for!!! I have a few M-Tech knives which I use as beaters, but I don't ever baton with them and I still have them ready to use on any given day! You want to break your knife, go ahead and baton with it using a freakin hammer and I guarantee you it'll break!!

This is a combat knife, not a wood splitting axe. It is not a work blade, it is designed to cut open ppls soft parts, not hack through hard wood.

good knife testing,it's good for martial arts.but not hard use.the test is very informative of what to expect from the blade.and I like the design of this knife.thanks for the test.it a medium duty knife.as most combat blades are.& yes it looked like it could take alot more.

This knife is made for SLICING!! not CHOPPING WOOD! Japanese did not chop wood with katana's and tanto's. If your going to test t these blades, test them by cutting, not chopping.

I have this in black and id never use it for that sort of work! Its ment to be used in the art of killing its not a camping bush craft blade! You want full tang for jobs like that!
@WalnutWarlord
@WalnutWarlord 9 жыл бұрын
correct in the sense that its not meant for camping lol. the samurai didnt see it as the art of killing, they saw it as an art of self defense and would normally only use blades in times of great need. not trying to be "that smartass" just thought ud like to know. ive trained in bushido for going on 12 years now i started when i was ten and im 22 nowe i have the seven virtues tattooed on my chest

@@blackforestghost1,(doubt you will read this) I mean no disrespect, but in a way he's right. A samurai is more than just a warrior, they lived by the Bushido code, as well as their religious practice of Zen Buddism. The virtues of the Bushido include. 1. Rectitude and Justice 2. Courage 3. Benevolence or Mercy 4. Politness 5. Honesty and Sincerity 6. Honor 7. Loyalty 8. Character and Self control Samurai were not just warriors, but men of culture, tradition, and service to their people. So in other terms, defense of others came before their own. You can say what you want to me, I've not only studied the samurai, but I've trained in their art of war, as well as studied their religion of Zen Buddism. I can tell you from what I experienced, they were more than warrior's. But, I can never say, they weren't men of action. Though they were men of action, they acted with reason and carefull judgment.

From the Budk catalog it says: This massive Honshu Tanto Knife is a great blade for self-defense or even hog hunting. Nowhere in the description does it say that it can be used in lieu of an axe. It is not full tang but a “rat tail” so unsurprisingly it breaks after repeated hammering with a mallet through cured construction lumber. Moral of the story? Wrong tool for the job. Now, show us how you’re going to take a stock Porsche and use it to do the Rubicon trail.
