A quick review of the United Cutlery polypropylene cane.

Personally it should be left as is, instead of hooking, the point should be used for giving pain if attacked. Kabar makes a similar cane made out of aluminum but more expensive.

I'm considering getting this one. I think I'd like to hacksaw the crook end at the beginning of the downward curve and give it a semi upsidedown "L" type pick axe handle, in the same fashion of angle cut they gave this handle. Inconspicuous, practical and tactical. Thanks for reviewing this and giving a real perspective, rather than from selling it.

+Chris Atkisson if you mean pulling the last couple of inches at the end of the crook out I'm not sure. If you mean to increase the diameter of the crook, I used tennis racket handle wrap. It works perfectly for me. I also cut about a quarter of an inch to a half inch off of the end of the crook and then re-profiled the point.

Great video ! Have a WSH Wood Sheep Hook from Tractor Supply that is cut down to Walking Cane size... And cost less than a drug store cane ! The WSH is sometimes called a Shepherd Staff and may be illegal for the Biblical history. tjl

You know its possible the people who made it put a lot of thought into how wide it is. If your hand fits into it, its wide enough your not trying to make it comfortable for your opponent.

I need my cane to stand as well as walk. If I would use my cane as a defensive tool, I'd fall down. My Right Hip and my Right Knees need replacement and the VA keeps putting off the my appointment. It well over two years now.

I bought 2 of these. To widen the crook or make it wider to hook legs or neck. Boil a pot of water and hold the crook in it and slowly bend it open. U have to do this several times and don't bend it to fast or too wide. I did this by putting crook on ground and stepping on it and pulling up on cane shaft. Opened the crook up 2in. If u do it too fast or too mucking bending. The cane will snap. I broke one doing this. Got to be a slow process Or you could jam a piece of wood between the crook & shaft and then put it in boiling water several times

Thanks, I didn't know that. I cut about a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch off of the horn,, (end of the crook), and reprofiled the point. It opened up the crook enough that it works a lot better for hooking.

They are hearding canes. I cut to length open crook a little and put noches in with dremmel tool and u have a nice cane

+Scout Sniper I have broken 2 of my oak cane's. I'm disabled, so I have to walk with a cane. A few years ago I started a cane defense class, now I'm one of the instructors, I have a martial arts background. So I broke both of them practicing , beating on a BOB target dummy. My Hickory cane's are still in one piece. Lol.

I have one and have suggested to training partners. Withstands banging marks and sun exposure. I bit heavy compared to wood, good for training . Shaft a bit small for my preference but usable. The crook does need to be opened a bit will try suggested method.

Chappy Fla heating didn't work for me. I just live with like it is, it will work. The diameter is too small for me too, I went to Walmart and bought the tennis wracket handle wrap. That works perfectly for me. I have medium sized hands.

I think the hook is wide enough. If you have to use this in self defense then why would you care if the hook ripped out your attackers throat? He would rip yours out without hesitation.

MrEdium I have been using it for a long time now and it has been fine. I wrapped the handle in tennis wracket grip tape and it increased the diameter and grip quite a bit. IMO anything like this is going to need a better grip than what the factory is going to put on it. I have medium sized hands and for me the grip is perfect.

What's it WEIGH??? and HOW strong is it? It looks just like the hickory one I want.. but like you - I'd file that tip down some- because around here it IS counted as a weapon... but I'd just like to know how much it weigh. The opportunity to hook comes up IF you know what you're doing. TAKE CANE-DO (ACSD).. I learned from Hapkido long ago- and you hook a good bit if you really learn how to use it. The tip is MOSTLY for pushin on pressure points to get RELEASED if they bear hug you or try to "grapple".. The ones I like are over $300... Worth it , but I can't right now.

@@brandonjenkins7569 lightly hitting a pile of wood trying to scare a snake out of it. I was surprised that the thing broke. I guess my using it weaked the polymer, sometimes I have to put half of my body weight on it. I'm not real big but I'm not all either.

DrDennis77 , go down to tractor supply or another farm supply store and buy a stockman’s cane. Solid hardwood cane that is a great self defence tool and cheap to boot. they are anywhere from $12-20. Add a $2 rubber tip at the pharmacy and you are good to go.

mikha007 there about a medium weight. And it depends on how big the wood cane is. I have 2 Hickory 1 inch in diameter cane's, they are a little lighter than those. My cane's are cut at 36 inches long. That's the correct length for me, other people will need them longer or shorter.

Budk actually has both of them. There's one that's the one I reviewed and the United Defense one is a compleatly different cane. They the one I reviewed they have listed under the wrong brand name. The United Defense one is a T-Handle cane. And I found the one I reviewed with the same search term. Get your story right before you go criticizeing someone else.

Ive used one daily for a year. I take it everywhere. It's useless as stock. The hook tip has to be carved back at least a half inch. That way it wont catch your wrist spinning. It's still narrow enough opening to stick prod rather than hook, which is desirable. The tip should be thrown away, replaced with 7/8. It can't be gripped when sweaty or in rain, just like the carved wood cains. So I customized powerful grip and striking stations onto mine with cord. I got striking surfaces on the horn back, on the handle top, on the front of the handle too. I practice fighting it dual welding now with tomahawks and knifes daily in the forest upon dead standing tree's. Im 56 and disabled but I look like a body builder now. Everything still hurts like hell all the time, and I gotta wrap and wear knee support or whatever, but Got chairs out their to sit in. Then I use my cane for foraging. I got grips down low on it for that. I can use it as long hook to bring down fruit laden branches to reach as well. Then sit in my chair, and blow my dogs whistle signal and then go up the hill to throw my tomahawks into the giant dead standing white oak with my dog tied off away, so I know where she is, and always look for shit that's gonna fall first. I use my cane hook to pull my smaller tomahawks out of the tree. Cant always get my fingers in there without serious splinters. Shit, I meant to buy tactical gloves. Still would use the cane though, or the splinters will get you bad and eventually they cannot be ignored. I got supreme grip control on this cane now. I even use it in my shitty shower. I train to fight it in so many ways. I can fight it powerfully even inside at close range, but my apartment is a low ceiling basement turd. I just live here for the forest out back nobody uses. I can mod 1" wooden canes to grip even better wet or dry, and it acts as armor and additional striking surfaces. Even though its heavy, I've learned to use it quick and powerful. When I do pick up one of my customized wooden canes, Im extremely fast and powerful with it, and they all look cool AF too. Any security assclown or pig gives me shit about it, I can show how I use every feature on it for increased mobility and reach, without ever acknowledging any combat ability. I can eve play on my past as a sailor, and my pride in the artful and powerfully useful cord work. They shouldn't be asking fuck those dickwads for pigging my business and fucking with my ability to defend myself and everything else. I expect to take my cane everywhere with me period. I got tactical Penlights and such which should be permissible anywhere as well. I got lots of levels of outfitting for various permissible environment's. Generally its legal here to carry swords Tomahawks any knife and guns. Guns aren't very useful, and they're big liability, and expensive, and a target. So I carry tomahawks and knife's and cane, and other defense items. I practice and customize my outfit and chosen equipment. Its fun dual or even triple welding and making trails in the forest. Oh yeah, slings can be attached to Cane's for exploding heads at distance. Im too old now, too much pain not enough energy,but I love this shit cause it all ties together nicely for me and I can kick ass as a bonus, and maybe even get laid again someday with these muscles. I carve wood, practice bushcraft, and know the various trees and their uses. I use my horn as a back scratcher. I use my customized canes for stretching and for rehab, and even massage of my arthritic wrists and hands. I got quick draw belt holders for my canes too. I can usually draw it quick enough to catch myself if I trip, or to stabilize and ride out a faint, or a vertigo attack, or my knee going out. What I got is never being unarmed from my most powerful defense, and it one I can have in hand without alarm, so nothing is as fast, except an empty or deceptive hand.
