Jesus Ferreira notched another hat trick as the United States topped Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday night in their Group A finale, securing a first-place finish in the group and a spot in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinals.
Ferreira is the first player to score hat tricks in two different Gold Cup games in the same tournament and is also the first U.S. player to score hat tricks in back-to-back games.
The U.S. opened the scoring in the 14th minute. U.S. DF DeJuan Jones pushed forward from his left back place and found MF Cristian Roldan near the edge of the area. Roldan attempted a cross that fell back into Jones' path, and he crossed for Ferreira. Ferreira took one touch and hit the ball past Trinidad and Tobago GK Marvin Phillip on the half-volley.
The North Americans doubled their lead in the 38th minute when MF Djordje Mihailovic set up Alejandro Zendejas to cross. Ferreira's first shot was deflected by Phillip, but Ferreira put a shot back on goal that was deflected and went over the line.
Ferreira then completed his hat trick right before halftime with a penalty conversion and a 3-0 lead.
Trinidad and Tobago thought it had its opener after the hour mark, when DF Shannon Gomez thumped a shot from distance but saw his effort bounce off the post.
Instead, it was the U.S. adding a fourth next. FW Cade Cowell ran onto a wayward pass from a Trinidad and Tobago player and was one-on-one with Phillip. After shifting past the goalkeeper with a cut back to his right foot in the box, Cowell finished for his first career Gold Cup goal.
It was 5-0 in the 79th minute when U.S. DF DeAndre Yedlin combined with Julian Gressel, whose pass found MF Gianluca Busio, who scored with a right-footed shot for his first-ever goal for the United States.
The final goal came in stoppage time, with FW Brandon Vazquez scoring off the bench, running onto a pass into the box from Cowell and finishing the move.
With the result and Jamaica's 5-0 victory over Saint Kitts and Nevis, the U.S. finishes first in Group A and moves to the quarterfinals awaiting the runner-up of Group D. Trinidad and Tobago turns its attention to Concacaf Nations League League A play, which begins in September.

It's just scary how behind we in T&T are. This is the US B or C team and we got beaten 6 nil. This shows all past Administrative heads of TTFA and the current Normalization Committee that they have been doing an excellent job to sink as slow as possible. They have worked extra hard to make sure we failed this high level planning and administrative work that has got us to this point.

It’s very sad to hear this about T&T. The US has a proud (and sad) soccer history with that nation, for better or for worse. I started following the TT Pro League when I found out how committed and determined a team they were; it gave me interest to do so. I hope they can rebound soon. With the WC having 48 teams now, this is the best opportunity for Trinidad and Tobago to qualify. They need to start acting like it.

We had an opportunity after we qualified for the World Cup to set things in order to rasie the level the game is in this country at secondary schools level, youth level, Stronger pro-league etc and instead the TTFA just didn't show any initiative and an once innovative competence to revamp the lowly and backward system we have and establish a system that raise the level of the sport so we have players who can step out to step out to elite leagues in the world and so that the coach has a strong pool of players to select from.

Watching players walking, ball watching, not running back to defend, not marking a player, is just poor. In 2023 a team has one striker in front to score why not a 4-2-4 formation. Certain guys' cycle in that Trinidad and Tobago nat'l football team should come to an end if the FA harbours any hopes of qualifying 4 the next World Cup. Certain guys shouldn't even be there. "Foreign-based" used to mean something 20 yrs ago but now it's almost as if as long as you play for a club that is not in Trinidad and Tobago then you stand a chance of getting picked

If what Ferreira did was so easy, then why has it never happened until now? He is constantly played out of his natural position by incompetent coaches like Berhalter. In every game he’s underperformed, you notice he’s not really getting many chances. That’s due to bad tactics, not because he’s a bad player. You and others like you are just bitter because of the WC, which is asinine and childish. Berhalter’s game plan is what caused that Dutch disaster and it left Ferreira, who’d never played a WC minute in his life at that point, hanging out to dry.
