This is something I rarely see at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). It's a F-18 Super Hornet of the United States Navy. It's loud, but cool at the same time!

Even did a goodbye wave. Sometimes depending on the airport and airspace the pilot will request an unrestricted climb, where they will use afterburner and pull straight up.

Actually, quite a few military aircraft visit LAX. A Lot of people are unaware that there is an Air Force base connected to LAX. Los Angeles Air Force base. Believe it or not, it has been there since before LAX was built. Prior to LAX, it was a military airfield where they tested jet aircraft.
@GraviVR Жыл бұрын
yes and no. i used to work there. the Airforce base you refer too is actually about 2 city blocks away from LAX and is the manufacturing plant for the F-18 in the video. unfortunately the base is separated by boeing and a few other businesses that northrop grumman gets their parts from. they do have the PX, Uniform shop and the commissary on base for the personnel and retirees which have civilian access if you have the proper identification or are with a retiree/service member. fun fact: LAX is actually used as training space for new pilots in the Airforce/Navy. every couple years you will see them come and go with F-18s, blackhawks, Ch-47s and Ch-53s. usually later into the year.

You got the history correct. However, today’s Los Angeles Air Force. Is not connected nor has anything to do with LAX what so ever.

That was an F/A-18E Super Hornet. I can’t make out the tail code. That would tell you the squadron. And on the fuselage somewhere would have been the squadron as well. VFA-xxx for instance. Or VX for a test squadron. Because the markings are so faint I’m going to take an educated guess and say that’s from VX-9 Vampires at China lake. They’re at OTE (test) squadron.

I was at the In N Out by LAX just plane watching and heard a loud ass plane taking off from the opposite runway. It was a fighter jet, but I couldn't make out what it was. It was so loud, so lucky to have gone and just happen to it take off that day.

They have fighter jets from the navy or marine corps or Air Force at every single United States airport to make sure that the airliners air space is safe
@5kylord3 жыл бұрын
@ Nick English .. That's not true. I've never seen fighter jets at the airports in Appleton or Milwaukee Wisconsin. Nor did I see any at Denver International when I flew in and out of there last weekend. There's no need to place jet fighters at "every single United States airport" because US airspace is off limits to unauthorized aircraft. Any unidentified and/or unauthorized aircraft approaching US airspace is intercepted by fighters which are scrambed from any of the various military bases while they are still in international airspace.
@Brian-rn2wx Жыл бұрын
Nope. Fighters come into airports for fuel stops generally.

Flying in and out of a busy mixed-use controlled airspace is part of the routine training and recertification process for military fast jet aviators. Since they start out in a world where they and their aircraft are exclusive and *the whole business* of their base or carrier airspace, it's vital to be up to speed with procedures when you're just a visitor aircraft among commercial heavies. I learned this by watching two different TV documentary series about the Canadian and Australian military training programs. The Canadian rookies had to book their flight into LAX as a part of their graduation test. The Aussies were not specifically a single training group, but they showed the details of moving out to an international combined force deployment in another country's airspace. Segments of both those docs are somewhere on YT.

It’s a U.S. Navy F-18 Super Hornet… I’m unsure if it’s one of the new advanced models.
