Thanks for the demo! I have a lot of mics including all the "classics". I picked up the Twin 87 just for fun and was extremely happy. I've only used it on acoustic guitars (baritone and standard tuning), but it's a keeper.

I personally love it most on acoustic guitar 😁

Good sound, thanks for the compare-o. Suggestion: Try a thin floppy pick for strumming acoustic guitar = less "thonk"-y , more ability to fit in a mix. Perhaps the most effective single change you can make without having to re-string into nashville-tuning or other: )

if you want bright acoustic - that's the way to roll. If you want a darker, heavier sound, an ultra heavy pick works wonders!

The time between mics in the vocal test was "WAY" too long. You should switch within seconds between mics; SO THAT WE COULD COMPARE ALSO!

Really helpful comparison. Thanks for that. I may actually consider this mic over the Neumann as the price difference is huge and the sonic difference seems small. One question about the sound remains though: what pre-amp did you use, as this is relevant for the sound.

The Twin 87 has become two of my favorite mics on acoustic guitar. I'll record rhythm on the Vintage setting, then switch to Modern for flatpicked lead. It depends on the guitar and player which one I'll use for fingerpicking.

hey one quick question what signal chain u used in this comparison? bcs u have that sound signature im looking after for years, that warm, rubbery kinda sound that for example the radio channel "CapitalXtra" is usinh check out their videos and you will hear this exact same rubbery kinda sound... i hope you can get back to me with that info you would do me a big big favour. :)

Good shoot out! The clone sounds good but is a mic of it's own. It doesn't sound like a u87 in my ears. The u87 is a great mic but in my opinion the M147 kills it, it's warm, full of character and gritty...
@RunningInSuits Жыл бұрын
Hey David, what do you prefer between your Twin 87 vs M149?
@nicholasparis5281 Жыл бұрын
Rad shootout and excellent demo song & performance! I was only disappointed that you didn’t hit the U87 modern on Vox (just to see how it sounds, and what frequencies it might overhype with sibilance etc). & Sweetwater has the U87 on sale for $499 right now!
@Scotanthony16 ай бұрын
The negligible difference between both of these mics in my opinion does not at all justify the price difference between them. I’m sorry, but a ridiculously overpriced U87 should not command anything close to $3,300, although I’m sure all the U87 fanboys will say otherwise. Sure, Neumann makes great mics, but they’re not the only ones that do, and there are much better deals to be had without breaking the bank! The United Twin 87 represents more than just a much better deal, but it also represents a common sense approach to a great product that more than holds it own and in my opinion is a no brainer. I will be ordering the United Twin 87. Sorry Neumann, then again, I’m not sorry at all!!!

Hey David. Great vid as usual. How would say the Twin 87 compares with the Stam 87 clone? Thanks
@billyhughes9776 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, even with your order. The UT87 Vintage mode had the detail of the ai but fuller lowmid/lowend and warmer top. Th UT87 Modern, def brighter but not bad and would be useful for certain sources/situations. Thanks for doing this.

Can’t lie that U87 ai won hands down the vocals had more presence and was a lot thicker compared to the twin 87 which felt airy and slightly thinner still

@DavidDiMuzioLessons2 жыл бұрын
They are quite different in what they do. One is a modeling mic, and the other is a model of a mic, haha. But either of those microphones can get you good results on vocals. I've owned both of them and wouldn't hesitate to use either one.

One of the best things you can do with the Twin 87 is open it up and flip the switches on the board to the RF OFF configuration. It really opens up the mids and gets it even closer to the modern u87 AI, in vintage mode, strangely.

If I'm recording to tape, almost any condenser mic will do, but if I'm recording to a harsh sounding medium, like, protools or cubase, then, it's a tube or a ribbon mic. Condenser mics sound really harsh on protools or cubase without a very high quality tube mic pre to remove the chill.
