A Grassroots Peace Movement in Papua New Guinea’s Hela Province

Nearly two decades of tribal conflict have decimated local communities throughout Papua New Guinea’s Hela Province. Today, the region sees some of the highest levels of family and sexual violence in the world outside of war zones, forcing many local people - especially women - to flee Hela in search of refuge. However, there is a burgeoning movement of community leaders working to not only understand what’s driving the violence, but to build the foundations for peace at the grassroots level in places where outside interventions have either failed or are nonexistent.
