Arthur Savage designed the 1899 in the 1890's in hope of a military contract. It went on to become the 99. The 99 is an exceptional short action hunting rifle and was so until the later part of the last century. The 99 is more comparable to the BLR as it can handle more high intensity cartridges than the Winchester 94 and Marlin 336 of the time. The rotary magazine allowed for pointed cartridges to be used which generally had greater velocities than flat nosed ones. The 99 has great balance and appearance. The rounding of the magazine makes carrying it a pleasure and accounts for the wear I find on most in the area of the receiver. Genius design, excellent craftsmanship, and icon of American rifle design. Thank you sir for sharing yours.

Its fine to have a few around but in time the collecting becomes suffocating and never ending. Im in my late 40's and a left handed user. Ive come to the point in life where i realize i need to keep the ones that i really use and fit me, and the others need to go. Ive been collecting up some left hand Ruger Hawkeye and Winchester M70 rifles while they are avaulable and affordable and the other things i have are gettting sold off. While i still am able im going to go and use my favorite like my Ruger and Wincjester classic bolt rifles, some Winchester 71, Marlins, and my Savage 99. I'll be very selective about picking new things up because im aiming to have fewer things and more adventure. Im going go hunting and backcountry exploring instead of owning a massive gun vault. I believe doing is more rewarding.

I have bought glocks and they always seem to go away. Thought the 45 ACP model was the tits but I traded it off. I sold my smith model 60 to fund my Thompson center contender purchase. Still miss the smith but use the contender more. I have purchased a few to sell or trade but basically I either trade up or collect, I traded a New York kimber 1911 for a klackamas 1911. The Yonkers one is better but the klack is rather rare.

After watching this video I found a Savage 99 for $150 usd in 300 Savage. Factory drilled for a scope, has cartridge counter, some surface rust but it shot a 1.25 inch group at 100 yards. I could probably improve on that. I see why the gun was so popular. But if there is a gun I want I do my best to save up for it. Even guns I haven't shot in 10+ years still have a spot in my safe or on the rack.

When it comes to the collector end of the firearms spectrum it can be quite the roller coaster of questions and details to evaluate. From hang tags and their string to paper wrapping to the condition of the box (if the gun has one) to whether if the gun has ever been shot since leaving the factory to the font of any markings to scarcity of caliber to whatever a person can think to examine. It can be one crazy ride trying to figure out all those things and collectors have a way to start seeing issues in a gun that are non-existent. Anyways that Savage 99 take-down with the Schnabel tip is a classy rifle. And that Remington-Lee is just one slick action in a beautiful package.

It uses the rear tang screws and the rear dovetail for the iron sights. Its called the Lightfoot mount. He does great work. I ordered one from him for this last deer season. Worked great. Those are all beautiful rifles and I greatly enjoy seeing all the variations. I have a Savage 99 in .300 that is my favorite rifle. I had grew up wanting one because my great grandfather owned one, and I had always admired it inside his rifle cabinet as a kid. It was the "talk of the town " according to my family, he was one of the only men to own one back in the day, in the poor mining town he came from. Most guys were using 94s, cheap 30-06 rifles or shotguns with "pumpkin balls". After he passed everyone in my family fought over who got it. I ended up buying my own after years of searching. Nothing else compares. My dream is to get a .308 model with a 22" barrel and the rotary mag with the older style safety. Seems impossible to find. I have seen several . 308s with the tang safety and box magazine, but I really don't like those changes.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns4 жыл бұрын
You have a gem - and part of a meaningful family history. The 99s are not easy to find - so many people want them and most people want them for hunting - not cabinet work. Your grandfather bought well and knew value. I hope you find a .308 - BTW - the tang safety is better than it seems and the removable mag is for sure not classic - but it works. : ) All the best to you!

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I appreciate your reply. It is still coveted here in the eastern states for its quick handling in the dense forests. When they do turn up for sale they are bought quickly and held onto. I haven't hunted with mine yet, but I plan to if I ever get the time. My great grandfather harvested all the family game with his. As for the .308, the reason I don't want the tang safety model is they don't allow the mounting of the Redfield aperture sights I want to use. I am very fond of the old Redfield peeps, and I always felt the perfect hunting setup would be the .308 99 with the Redfield. As for the box magazine, it's really just my affinity for the classic rotary mag that keeps me from embracing the box magazine, but I do appreciate the utility they offer.

When i was much younger, and Savage 99's were plentiful and reasonably priced and still in production, I'm talking the 60's 70's and 80's, I had little interest in them. Then towards end of production a buddy I was hunting with had bought a 99 in .308 Win. I shot it and liked it, it also started a change of how I felt about them. But there still were other firearms that were at the top of my want que. During my training in gunsmithing I really learned an appreciation for the 99's design. And although I still have not acquired one, I would love to have a takedown model from the 1920's to 1960's era. As I see it I can only find two detractors to the 99. One is in the problems usually encountered with the spindle and counter of the rotary magazine, especially compounded by kitchen table gunsmithing. The second is the understanding that the 99 is at it's absolute max limit in design for handing the .308 Win round. These chambered guns can take a beating if shot a lot. The design was not intended for the pressures developed by cartridges in this class, this is why you don't see more potent chamberings in the model 99. But not to worry because there are tons of other rounds it was chambered for that are just as enjoyable and can get the job done on deer sized game. Such as the .300 Savage, .250-3000 Savage, ..30-30 win, .38-55 Win, .303 Savage to name a few. The 7mm-08, .284, and .243 win I believe are pushing that chamber pressure curve like the .308 Win does, but they are fine rounds and if not reloaded above factory /SAMMI specs and not fired in strings of hundreds of rounds per range visit should be fine and not be cause for concern or damage to the rifle. I am curious, what is your background pertaining to firearms? Do you own the models shown in your videos? And how do you generally aquire them, as a dealer, privately? I don't know how all of your Canadian gun laws work, but would be interested in understanding how that works for you. Thanks for the content.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I tried to find the pressure limit for the 99 - no luck. The 99 action seems to handle the .308 without a grunt. Generally the locking system is similar to the Martini tipping block - with the bolt wedged in place. Anyway, as you know .308 maximum pressure is 62,000 PSI and the .300 Weatherby maximum is 65,000. As far as my background - I started being interested in machines of all kinds in my single digit years; I've been collecting guns for decades. The laws are simple - a license is required and special additional licenses are required for restricted firearms such as handguns and certain semi-automatic weapons. There is a third class for prohibited firearms which are grandfathered. Storage laws are excellent and one is responsible for safe storage and safe ammunition storage. Thanks for being on the channel.

Thanks. You sent me to the safe for a closer look at my model 99. Unfortunately my take-down was apparently not scoped at the factory. Never noticed that the trigger was checkered. I do have the .410 shot barrel for the rifle but haven't used it. Don't think anyone has. In .250-3000 with 100gr. bullets, it's a usable eastern deer rifle, though I no longer hunt. Guess I should sell it and others now.

Mike , I just responded to George Ulicy , under comments back to Rich Frazier . - ie- Since 300 Savage ammo is no longer a common ammo , & it can be reformed out of 308 brass , could not a Savage 300 of non collector status be reamed out to the 308 caliber ?? Thanks for your response.

Hi Robert - I've seen a few of these. The .308 seemed to work perfectly after .300s were rechambered. One fellow told me he had to do some work on the feeding - but the others said with 150 grain bullets seated to proper overall length they has no issues and accuracy was excellent. I'll have to try it myself on day.

Back in the '60s I had a Savage 99C (with the detachable magazine) in 308. I took a few deer with it. It's funny. Back then 99s were common enough and considered an old guy's gun. Of course, a lot of we kids were using our fathers', or more likely, our grandfathers' guns, but as we bought our own it generally wasn't a lever action. Interestingly, the 308 wasn't respected much then either - the general thinking being what's the point of a cartridge that is almost but not quite a 30-06? As was common and perfectly legal back then, we tended to sell or trade guns back and forth, so who knows where my old 99 is now. But never would I have expected these to become collectible, nor would I have expected the 308 to become so popular and respected. But then, I'd never have thought my old man's beast of a '66 Chevy pickup would one day become something that people would buy and restore as a collectible classic. You never know.

Great post STOG - yes indeed - how the value and perception of things change. I have a hunch the 99 was in the hands of a lot of fathers and grandfathers and young men; and memory takes us back to the people we loved. We can't get them back - but we can get the guns they had.

Ember Marie your best bet is to keep hold of it if you can. If not take it to a reputable gun shop or even check out some of the online sellers to get an idea of value.
@charlesmckinley294 жыл бұрын
Step one: know what you have. The 99 was made for a long time and in a lot of calibers. Figure out the year, caliber and how rare and or desirable it is. Consider its condition for its age then watch gun broker for guns that actually sell. Something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it on that day. Do you want what the cash can buy more than you want the rifle then it is a good price to you.

@@adamkadir3803 build quality, steel quality, different action designs, different calibers. The point is, that to a novice collector they both look almost identical. I'd like to hear his opinions on these carbines.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn - Good question. I've owned more than one of both. I find the Swedish M1894 the better of the two. Interestingly, I have a beautiful Spanish carbine in the vault which I'll be making a video on. The Spanish is in 7X57 of course and is, as usual, extremely accurate even with the coarse sights. The Swedish M94 is just as accurate (at least mine were) and the action has a feeling of closer tolerances - even the bolt shroud on the Spanish carbine seems "primitive" - while the Swedish bolt and the way the bolt slides in the receiver "feels" better. Of course - this is all subjective overall I'd vote for the Swedish carbine - which also happens to be more scarce and worth more. Hope this makes sense.

What happened to the value if the barrel needs rechambered due to pitting
@UnitedStatesOfGuns2 жыл бұрын
Not a big deal. I'd try to find a surplus original barrel - if possible with the flaming bomb. There are also smiths around who can sleeve the chamber - the ones I had done were just about undetectable. Not cheap though. The replacement barrel is the easier way - I pay the same for a Springfield with a replacement barrel or original. Keep the old barrel in case one day you sell - which I don't think is a good idea - the selling I mean : ) All the best, good shooting and good luck!

@UnitedStatesOfGuns4 жыл бұрын
Hello - oh yes - I'm reloading again; .257 Roberts is one of my favorite cartridges. .243 is great as well but I like the .257 for the slightly heavier bullets one can load - 120s. .300 Savage is one of the best but the .308 casts a shadow over it.
@betchalife4 жыл бұрын
@@bobgarr6246 Yeah that's a fail on my part. In my mind I think I just combined the two LOL. I just noticed Mike has a lot of rifles in these calibers and was curious. What would the advantages/disadvantages of a either of those over a more common 22 caliber like 223/22-250 ect?
@betchalife4 жыл бұрын
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns nice! So a 257 would be 120 gn projectile, that's pretty much double a 223. What speeds would you be looking at?
@bobgarr62464 жыл бұрын
@@betchalife the .243 win and the .257 Roberts in general use heavier bullets, and due to the larger diameter they have better sectional density and ballistic coefficients. This translates into better stabilization in flight and better terminal ballistics. So you gain more in muzzle energy. And with the proper bullet construction it will make it a more lethal hunting round..... If you do your part. The .243 is a fine cartridge with bullet weights suitable for varmints thru whitetail deer. It is based on the.308 case and is plentiful. The .257 is a good performer and if I recall correctly is based on the 7mm mauser. This quarter bore has seen better days and finding ammo is not as easy as the .223, 243, or the .22-250. And not many manufacturers are chambering for it. Hope this helps.
