Most of the reason they are in a bad position financially is they used cheap money to do debt fueled growth. They bought many other companies in order to get bigger. We don't actually know if they would be profitable if they did not have the weight of all those other companies and loan payments. They are certaintly in a bad place now with interest rates going up.

1:23:35 To remove tarnish from silver, you add aluminum and **washing** soda (sodium carbonite) into water, not baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). You then dip the silver item into the water so that it touches the aluminum. The thicker the aluminum, the better it will remove the tarnish. There was product sold on infomercials back in the 1990s that was basically a perforated aluminum sheet sized to fit in the bottom of a standard household sink and a small bag of washing soda for this express purpose. **edit** I should point out that washing soda is caustic. If you try this, wear kitchen gloves and goggles for protection.

It’s not really a problem because sodium carbonite doesn’t exist so it can only be sodium carbonate but FYI in chemistry the terms “carbonate” and “carbonite” are distinct. For more info look “Carbonite (ion)” on Wikipedia
@jase_allen
@jase_allen Жыл бұрын
@@G_Alamia It kind of is a problem. I tried it back in the day when that infomercial aired a lot. I didn't catch the washing soda part and used baking soda and aluminum foil, just like Linus mentions. It didn't work. Years later I was looking for something in the cleaning aisle at the store and saw a box of washing soda. I remembered my experiment and bought it. I retried the experiment with the same small silver dish I tried it on the first time. It worked. It wasn't instant like in the infomercial with the much thicker aluminum sheet, and it certainly didn't make it gleam like I had properly polished it, but got rid of the tarnish.
@G_Alamia

@@jase_allenI think you misunderstood me, I was making a useless nerdy correction to what OP said: according to the usual chemical notation the “sodium carbonite” (what OP wrote) is different from “sodium carbonate” (what OP meant) and both of them are different from “sodium bicarbonate” (baking soda). I wrote that OP’s mistake is probably not important because “sodium carbonite” with a i does not even exist, so when looking for sodium carbonite you will probably still find sodium carbonate (washing soda)

@@knifeyonlineI mean, it will definitely only hurt legitimate Unity Personal users. Pirates will be able to keep on using the old engine versions forever, and they will continue working the way they've always been. And eventually also the new ones when they get cracked, too. Always online DRM is really no different from regular DRM from the perspective of pirates. Either way you're completely off the grid with a fully unlocked piece of software.

@@Tofflus fair enough I stand corrected. I was just speculating it might be a CYA move given what happened with Quad9 vs Sony just a few months ago in a German court. The Ludum Dare game jam is coming up in a couple weeks which is a cool competition where people develop a game from start to finish in 72 hours. Over the years Unity has massively gained in popularity to where a solid majority of the games for Ludum Dare are Unity games. I will be interested to see the spread of game engines this time around. While many will probably stick to what they know and are comfortable with, I suspect many others will use this jam as an opportunity to try out a new engine.

@@krissy_h7854 Mostly true, but in my last jam I actually dove headfirst into a new engine and I ended up making my best game yet. There are a couple weeks of this bad unity press for anyone to learn the basics of a new engine. One thing about Unitys mafia tactics. Unity bought an ADservice 2 years ago and seems to be exempting the install fees (or giving big discount 80-100%) to developers switching/using their ad service instead of competition. So this is a force tactic to make developers to use Unitys services instead of competitions services.

If Unity simply asked developers to self report their sales _and_ ensured that it wasn't possible for charge more than the developer made in sales then it would have been unwelcome but wouldn't have received anywhere near the level of backlash. I don't understand what these business people are thinking. Clearly they don't care about profit because this was a massive self own.

@weirdguybr

Exactly - the problem wasn't the fact that they were charging, but the crazy amounts and how they rolled out the change. If they had been less greedy and only started rolling this out progressively, most studios would just plan future development including the changes and everyone would be happy - after all devs are business people too and they understand that everyone in the chain needs to be profitable to stick around.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Micro-B's downfall was not the spec. It came out right about the time that smartphones were going mainstream and manufacturers were aggressively chasing the race to the bottom. The point of Micro-B was to make the port more durable and let the cable be a wear part... Manufacturers immediately started violating the spec and made the ports cheap and flimsy too, as well as making crappy cheap cables so they could save a few pennies per unit. It was a match made in hell.

2:39:20 About Linus’ comment about not going too hard into Apple for not supporting USB 2 speeds on iPhone 15 since it’s A16 Bionic doesn’t support USB 3 speeds; I must say I wholly disagree. It is completely Apple’s fault that a $1000 phone is shipping with USB 2 speeds, it was their choice to re-use last year’s chip, it was their choice to not adopt USB earlier and then rush at the end with a botched implementation while profiting off of proprietary fees for Lightning, it was their choice to use their own chipset instead off countless off-the-shelf ones with USB 3 support. Not having it on a year old chipset because they couldn’t be bothered to support a universal standard is not a valid excuse

I'm gen Z and I can text faster than I type. I think the big issue is that we were taught to type pretty early in life and then it's just expected that we're always using computers but a lot of stuff is handwritten until college and by then you have years of a gap between when you learned to type and when it's applied. Meanwhile, we are always consuming content and reading the news on our phones. I bet if you had the Zoomers and the Millennials do speed typing and speed texting you'd see a large difference between the generations on both

As a millennial (barely) - I can most definitely type way faster than I can text. I've been touch typing since grade school as my family always had computers and my Dad encouraged me quite a bit when he saw interest (I work in IT now as an adult). I text in full sentences with both thumbs at a decent enough speed but am no speed demon. But I vastly prefer a full size keyboard, mouse, and monitor for doing anything more than consuming content. I will actively get up and go back to my desk if I have to do something requiring input; that and mobile websites / apps aren't always as fast. But I'm older than Linus, so who knows :)
