I'm so glad you just posted this! Been diving into multiplayer solutions in Unity lately - namely looking to do a local host Jackbox type of game (where people join on phone and play over Wifi, and view it on PC) but google has not been helping at all.

when we did it for our AR game, we used UNET - so I would assume Mirror should also be able to support local wifi. I think the way Jackbox typically does it is through NAT punchthrough, where you connect to the server and that server connects everyone to each other. I ended up cutting when I mentioned that in this video for time and I didnt run into any solutions, but that is what I would look for.

How do you feel about doing proof of concept builds with a managed service and then switching to self managed if one determines the concept is worth production? Is there a great deal of reengineering that would have to occur?

kinda depends on how complex the POC builds are, but generally speaking, assuming you have abstracted out the networking correctly, then it should not be too complex to swap between SDKs under the assumption the services have similar features. but if you are just passing messages between players, that makes things a lot simpler.
