AUDIO: "'SOS (I've Got To Run)" by Chris Schlarb & Psychic Temple. Featuring electric bass by Steuart Liebig and drums by Tabor Allen.
musicfrombigego...
One of the few “studio classics” the Universal Audio 1176LN Limiting Amplifier can be found in almost every professional recording studio on the planet.
Designed by Bill Putnam in 1968 and sold through his company UREI, the 1176 FET compressor has undergone almost ten revisions in the last half century. Fixed compression settings of 4:1, 8:1, 12:1, and 20:1 are augmented by full adjustable attack and release times. Interestingly the input knob also controls the threshold setting allowing the signal to be lightly or aggressively processed. Many engineers swear the by 1176 for vocal, guitar, bass, and snare drum duties. In fact, the 1176 is such a classic that no less than five different companies currently manufacture “clones” or copies of their own: Warm Audio WA76, Purple Audio MC77, Slate Pro Audio Dragon, Hairball Audio FET Compressor, & Mohog MoFET76.

Love the video, but must clarify that the different revisions actually were quite different from transformer driven to transformerless, which definitely affects the tone of the boxes. Revisions D, E, F, H (silver face), and LN do not sound alike at all.

Great overall sound! Is that an EV RE20 on your vocal? Matches your voice really good! What preamp do you use for the mic? Thank you!

Thanks for the comment and the kind words. I'm using an EV RE-20 just as you suspected. What an incredible workhorse microphone. I don't remember exactly but I think I'm using an Empirical Labs Mike-E for the vocal preamp here.

for the bass you said it is on a slow attack, and a quick release, but the knobs each look as though they are the opposite.

cesteacy I know what you mean! It can be pretty confusing. Check this out from the 1176 operation manual: "Note that, unlike many other devices, the 1176LN attack and release times are faster when their associated knobs are turned clockwise, and slower when they are turned counterclockwise."

Hi great video, quick question, are you patching your outboard get to your mixer, or straight out of daw? Im looking for a 16ch mixer myself and was wondering of most people have the hardware patched to the mixer then accessed to it from protools to mixer
@BIGEGO
@BIGEGO 7 жыл бұрын
For this setup we were running 16 analog outs from the Apollo into the patchbay and then into the Soundcraft 6000. Each line out can be assigned within your DAW. It can be a little confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, you won't want to go back.

BIG EGO thank you. Thats the current setup i have with 10 i/o to the patch bay but wanted to summ out audio to a mixer. So i was wondering if you had your mixer as a main insert point for your hardware units.
@BIGEGO
@BIGEGO 7 жыл бұрын
I wasn't using any inserts. Just taking the line out from the Apollo into the patchbay and plugging directly into outboard gear, then going into the line in of whatever channel on the mixer. Hope that helps!

I did. We purchased an Audient ASP4816 console when we opened the new studio space. They're great consoles though. I HIGHLY recommend them.

Good music without a doubt, just curious. Do you like tha LA2A over this compressor in this video ?
@BIGEGO
@BIGEGO 5 жыл бұрын
LA2A and 1176 are both classic compressors! Each of them does something a little different: the 1176 is faster and is perfect for guitar or snare drumwhile the LA2A is ideal for slower sounds like vocals or bass.

Is my 1176ln supposed to have a weird flubby lower midrange noise when just compressing the lows of a bass guitar? It happens at all ratios, and without driving the input past 12 o'clock, every time the needle moves. It seems to happen with my plugin emulations as well, so I'm assuming this is a known characteristic. Is it?

Can you run an entire mix back through it or do you have to use one channel at a time?
