Hi Ed - Thanks for this review. I invested in the Apollo Twin MKII DUO Thunderbolt 2 to use with LUNA on my older Mac (TB2). I've only had it for a week and I've already gotten the “One or more UAD plug-ins are disabled because DSP resources were exceeded” errors in LUNA. So now I'm looking at getting a UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt 2 OCTO Core. How many plug-ins can run in LUNA with help from the Satelliite OCTO core while live tracking? For example while live tracking, guitar signal is split through a pedalboard to L & R outputs (or say a stereo Rode NT4 mic) direct into the two Apollo Twin line/mic inputs, and then running different plug-in chains on two channel strips in LUNA. How does the UAD-2 Satellite make the additional DSPs available to LUNA? Are those additional resources only available during mixing, or are they available during both live tracking and mixing?
@EdThorne4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, this is a very question. I’m going to forward this to my contact at UAD and get back to you because I’ve heard Satellites don’t contribute towards recording DSP and only help with mixing. When tracking, try disabling any and all plugins in your mix project. Even if idle they will use up your Apollo’s DSP. With an Octo I can get 35-40+ plugins on the go when mixing. I have a video coming out on this very soon where I will stress test my devices.
@EdThorne4 жыл бұрын
@KevinBarnard I've heard back from my contact at UAD who is super helpful. He made some good points to bear in mind when tracking/mixing. (NOTE: These are mostly his words): 1) Apollo DSP is used for the local inputs/recording DSP per interface and Satellites can only be used for mixing plug-in DSP on playback / non-record enabled tracks. 2) LUNA Extensions (Oxide, Studer, Ampex & Neve Console Summing) and Instruments all run natively on the Mac CPU and do not use any of the UAD-2 DSP at all - either from Apollo’s or Satellites. 3) Satellites cannot boost the power of Apollo inputs being processed because the local DSP is allocated to the physical I/O due to Unison being integrated with the analog front end. 4) Don't run Console and LUNA at the same time. Luna has console integrated into it so it acts as a self contained recording system. You can still set up monitoring chains using Busses and the ARM system to feed you Auxes. Luna monitoring works in a slightly different way to Console, which I will be explaining in a forthcoming How To video. 5) Adding a Satellite will let LUNA move the plug-ins on your playback tracks to the satellite, freeing up more Apollo DSP for the tracking/live input portion of your workflow. Luna does this automatically 'under the hood'. SO, in essence, yes the Satellite will greatly help your mixing stage, but will not contribute to your recording DSP. Disable console and set up your monitoring through LUNA, if you are recording into that. If you're using another DAW then obviously use Console. Also, as I previously mentioned it's worth disabling your Unison and Insert plugins in Console because even if the Console app is closed - whatever plugins you last used will still be acting as enabled on your Apollo. Some DSP management is required to get the most out of this system. Again, I have another video coming covering all this good stuff :-) I hope that helps. Kudos and thanks to Tom at UAD for the extensive info.

Hello, I have a silly question, hope you can clarify. I am thinking to get an Apollo solo for start recording guitar, I only need one input and that interface looks to be what I’m looking for. Would the satellite unit increment the Apollo solo processing power if required? For instance if I require to use more plugins in a future. I appreciate your input on this.
@EdThorne3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, A Satellite would allow you to increase your mixing DSP, however, the only DSP available for tracking is the native DSP inside your Apollo device, your Solo. In terms of powering the Solo, because it is TB3 (only) bus-powered (2016 Macs onwards, unless you have the PC version), using a Satellite would require two Thunderbolt inputs. Power won't pass through the Satellite so you can't daisy-chain them. I'm not entirely sure if the Solo works if powered through a TB3 hub/expansion unit, in theory, it should. The Satellite will greatly improve the amount of DSP available for mixing.
@Daniel-ff3nv3 жыл бұрын
@@EdThorne thanks a lot for you feedback. I will research a bit more then. The Apollo solo seemed to be ideal size/# of inputs, the other devices (twin, X4) are definitely overkill for what I’m looking for which is only record my electric guitar through the amplifier/OX line out.

@EdThorne4 жыл бұрын
JaMerv The single core will enable you to use approximately 5-8 legacy plugins. Which is plenty for recording/monitoring. Then when mixing, disable the plugins you have used to record/monitor in Console, then you will have another 5-8 to mix with. If you leave the plugins in Console armed, they will use up the DSP, even if not being used. I’ll put this in the DSP video 🙂 You can always add a Satellite as a stand-alone additional plugin processor for mixing. With the Apollo Twin models and above, you daisy chain them: Apollo-Satellite-Computer. To use the a satellite with an Apollo Solo (TB3 version) on a Mac, you would need to plug them in separately because the TB3 version of the Solo is buss powered. Instead of buying an FX unit, for example, for $2000 that has its own DSP in it and programming, instead with UAD that DSP is interchangeable based on which plugin you select. Hello Ed, I just bought a uad satellite tb3 octa, for my twin x quad. I daisy Chained it apollo-satellite-mac pro And when i‘ll Go in my project in fl And do a Send Return for the Capital Chambers It works with one, but when i want to do another Send with Chambers i get an error code -38 and some plugins Turn off. Do you Maybe know why this happens? I‘m really confused at the Moment, because I got the satellite to have wider Mixes. Thanks in advance

But don't you get the same plugins you get with the interface when you buy the satellite also? So what do I do with the second copy of these plugins!?
@EdThorne2 жыл бұрын
UAD frequently change what plugins are supplied with what device, so it's best to keep an eye on their website. Unfortunately, as far as I know, duplicate purchased plugins are redundant. It's probably worth messaging UA though and seeing if they'd swap a couple for you. It's always worth asking!

So when you add this, does it give you a total of 6 DSP cores you can utilise at the same time?

Mario Smith No need to apologise, I’m happy to help 🙂 So the need to register the Satellite is to link it to your account so you can run the plugins on the satellite even if you don’t have your Apollo connected. Once registered they will be saved onto your satellite. The units talk to each other as well and automatically distribute the processing power of both connected.

If you use UAD EQ, Compressor, delay and reverb plugins, for example, instead of native Ableton plugins, yes it will save CPU load. The Apollo only processes UAD plugs though, it won’t help out with the Repro 5 workload.

Waves and UAD are both excellent and they do sound just like the hardware,except for some minor things, don't believe the nay sayers. Either one you buy will do a great job. I recommend not buying UAD, even though I own Two Apollo quads and two Satellites via only one Apollo is hooked up. Waves is the way to go because they are so inexpensive now and high quality. If the unison feature is what you are thinking of buy Slate's Preamps plugin. Slate claims his preamps sound just as good as unison because their plugins are so streamlined, he can fit everything into the plugin without having to use the hardware. He also claims you can record with the plugin with super low latency. I believe him because I have used many of his plugins. I also own two ML2 mics and the emulations are spot on, since I own some of the real mics and compared. Amazing really. I would also suggest NLS and a tape machine on every track if you didn't record with a console or tape machine. Anyways UAD programs are hogs if you use the unison ones, really frustrating. They need to fix that, I have 12 sharc processors running and still can not use that many more unison plugins on a mix than when I ran 4 processors. Also, it will say you have 85% left and it won't let you run anymore plugins or if it does when you boot your mix up again it won't load some of them and say sorry. The UAD support staff can't even tell you why they just read a line off the paper basically. Don't get me wrong UAD plugins sound fantastic but so do all the others. When I was starting out Waves was $200+ a plugin and slate didn't have a lot of plugins. So use my suggestions above.

@@beatmakerarmetsao 40 is low for you? Do you mix UAD exclusively? I've never met ONE engineer to date to mix EXCLUSIVELY with just UAD plugs. 40 UAD plugs that's an insane amount if you take in consideration the fact that your CPU has ZERO impact. What does that translate into? Well, if your CPU allows you to load up to around 90 plugins (depending on the CPU and buffer settings)natively, then add 40 UAD DSP (great quality) plugins, is the average of 130 plugins that small of a number for you? LOL You really don't seem to understand the advantage of DSP power added to a computer. Put it this way, those big recording studios, do they ever complain for having less than 30 hardware units in their studios? Each UAD plug is very close to the hardware unit and officially endorsed with the companies who made the original hardware, it's like you get those hardware units inside your computer and the number 40 is really that low for you giving the quality of them and also the advantage of mixing it with the native plugins that can run on your CPU?
