Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the review! Having this on the radar for the past month. What I don't understand is, that it's described as a USB powered interface. But it comes with an AC adapter. Can I use this interface with full power on my PC? I'm not a fan of USB powered hardware... How did you use it? I saw that you're plugged in via AC and USB.

Great question! I had to research that myself. While it CAN work off of USB power, the manual says it works "in limited configurations". I didn't bother to look into what features won't work without the AC adapter so I have both USB and the AC adapter plugged in. The smaller Volt interfaces will work without an AC adapter. I hope that helps! It's a fantastic sounding unit.

while researching external USB hard drives, i ran across a phenomenon where USB busses in a computer can be strained by having to pump out too much juice over time. I can attest first hand that i had a mono interface that would run off the USB bus, but it was a real power-pig and on occasion it died or lost connection. I think i'm I'm going to use the provided power supply.

Thanks for the unbox! I got one and was like "uhh is there some documentation missing? No warranty card?" I thought i got a used unit at first. Sparse contents seem to be the new normal.

The manual says it works "in limited configurations" when using USB power. I personally use the included power supply to ensure I have proper headroom on all channels. The 476 and 476P both include a power supply whereas the other models do not.

OK here’s a good question for somebody who might now. It has four lines out for rack gear, does that also include additional preamps, such as my universal audio 710? I do this combination with my apogee duet currently and just keep the gain on the apogee down to zero.

Yes, you can absolutely run the line outs of the Volt interface into an external preamp. Just be mindful of your preamp levels on the Volt and UA710 as too much gain will surely lead to some distortion (although some people may love that effect haha). Hopefully that helps!

@@GuzelStride I thought so. I’m really torn between this and the SSL 12.. I’m coming from an apogee duet 2 and I’m pretty used to having some damn good cramps and AD converters. However, I have spent a lot of money in the past year on equipment and I would rather not spend another 1500+ on the apogee symphony desktop. Especially when I’m doing a lot of my recording directly into my iPad now with Logic Pro. The options on the UA are great but I’m afraid the preamps on the SSL 12 might be better

I also had my eye on the SSL 12. If you want a transparent mic pre then maybe go with the SSL. The UA will give you more color using the vintage/1176 settings. I went with the UA because I'd prefer to add some color (especially on my drum machine). It also has dedicated monitor outputs with 4 additional line outs. You really can't go wrong either way.

Dummy question here..... I only see one 48v switch, so they are either all on 48v or all off, right? So using a condenser and dynamic at same time.... how is it possible? The 48v is switched on for all channels and just doesn't affect the channel with dynamic plugged in? (Acoustic guitar with condenser and dynamic for vocals is what I'm thinking...) Thanks for any info!

The 48v phantom power switch applies to all channels so it's essentially all or nothing. In my experience you shouldn't have issues having phantom power applied to any microphone with the exception of older ribbon microphones. Please note I'm not responsible for any damage done to any equipment through phantom power. If you're seriously concerned about this I'd contact UA for their official statement, but personally I've never had any issues. I hope this helps!

Is it noisy i have a model 12 that gets a little noisy with compression looking to upgrade for recording ill keep it for live

I wouldn't say it's especially noisy. If you put a noisy signal into compression then you're likely going to amplify that noise. I hope that helps!
