Dr. Pretorius’s creations were “Homunculi” - tiny bottled humanoids produced through alchemy - which was itself heavily associated with Dr. Frankenstein’s methods in the original novel. In the movie, it shows that Pretorius (like Frankenstein) was trying to play god and create his own life, though it also implies that his approach might’ve encroached upon the mystical/devilish.
