This is my all-time favourite TV quiz show from Granada,and I love Bamber Gascoigne ,and I love the original theme tune,and I used to remember screen these on Sunday afternoons at 1:00 pm,and still bring me back memories forever.

Well done Brian. I think that Bamber was a legend. I guess today's students don't look as peculiar as the members of the Leicester team did back then. Great to see the audience having a great time.

I always felt thick and insular watching this show and thought these were very bright chaps, I didn't realise until more traveled eyes that it actually appears to be more an end of term quiz of subjects covered in the curriculum than a broad knowledge based thing where genuinely gifted brainbots get to shine, more 'best parrot wins' than actual intelligence

I love this! Daugherty is a genius man! The audience is absolutely MAD! And I definitely prefer Bamber's more avuncular approach to Paxman's angry schoolmaster style.

Wow Dougherty is very good! Love the way he rolls his eyes at the cheering at 22 minutes - he hates it! I notice the audience is full of students, rather than today's audiences which have a much greater percentage of parents/grandparents. I left England in 1974 and remember watching this as a kid so this "show" is a lot older than 1984 although this episode maybe from then, I don't know.

@Bessie Hillum yeah I've been back a lot but MY mom and dad are dead now and all the Aunts and Uncles. Lots of my first cousins still alive though! I'm truly said about our Queen.

This marks the closing of an era when students still sought answers to scholarly questions rather than running off to safe rooms because they get a touch of the vapours over the more robust scenes contained within Shakespeare's plays or else wasting time on protests to shut down opinions that do not necessary coincide with their own narrow view of the world. God! I would hate being a student today - it is, for the most part, all dumbed down.

I'm two years late, but University Challenge is obviously still running today with equally, if not more, clued up students. Yes, there are some people that try to shut down conversation because they don't like the topic, but this isn't a new phenomenon. For example, there was historically a lot more suppression of knowledge from religious bodies.

Zero questions on Tech, TV, modern culture, so-called celebrities and entertainment (not considered 'knowledge'). Much better than today, I wonder how a 21st century team would cope with the same questions?

The music questions included popular music, the picture questions were all film directors, and the pacemaker and weapons are all technology.

Noticably fewer scence questions than today,or am I imaging it? Also, I remember lots more Classical mythology and bible stuff that I didn't have a clue about as a teenager.
