Heard the word uttered first by a Chinese gentleman who fancied himself Australian and pronounced it that way, although I pronounced it 'tewmeric'. Only recently did I realise I'd been mispronouncing it for years. Beware of learning a new word from a non-native-speaker of English.

John Cale is an unapologetic animal-abuser, and persona-non-grata to me and others. In 1977, he had a chicken killed backstage by a roadie. Why was a chicken backstage? Cale had bought the poor creature at a farm, and wanted to create "a shocking showstopper event". He beheaded the chicken onstage, then threw the animal's head and body into the crowd. He later expressed remorse, but still defended the "showstopping" side of this defilement. How he has remained an "artistically important" figure, I don't know, but it's mortifying for veggies like me to hear his name dropped, used as part of a question on highbrow programmes like University Challenged, and hailed as a "godfather of punk".
