UCL Finlay here following in the tradition of other contestants posting here (thanks Mr Pumpkin having these episodes on KZbin is such help for revising to prepare for the show and getting it out to friends not in the UK) - well I think the only more stressful experience in my life than watching that back was playing it the first time. Still not quite sure how we did that - trinity were mighty opponents whose performance in previous rounds had reached us before we even played this round, not to mention incredibly gracious and friendly ever since. Not sure how I pulled some of those out of my brain before my name was called (as you can see most of my memory of to pimp a butterfly is pretty rubbish) and found myself playing along getting more of trinity’s bonuses than our own. (I’m very pleased with the confidence I guessed the dalloway principle with when I was only thinking of time in the Virginia Woolf novel) hope you’ll be watching the remaining rounds and thanks for all your support :)

Hello everyone, it’s UCL Hall here adding to Finlay’s comment - what a match!!! I really hope you enjoyed it, this is the one I’ve been most excited to watch so far as I’m sure you can see why. We knew this match would be very challenging going into it, but I think when we found ourselves 100 points behind it was going a lot worse than even we had anticipated it might. Thankfully, the UCL spirit kept us going and some aggressive and perhaps slightly risky buzzing paid off and gave us that edge over Trinity in the end. I am very glad I got that osprey question, as it is a running joke in the team about my weirdly niche British bird knowledge - I could feel the team looking over at me and knew I had to pull something out the bag. This match was ridiculously stressful, I knew something big was happening when I felt my heart beat at the same speed as one of the fast music questions! It was incredible fun though, as every match with my incredible teammates Ali, Tayana, and Jacob was, and the team from Trinity were incredible opponents and all-round lovely people. Keep tuned to see who we play in the semi-finals and what happens… Edit: I’ve seen a few people here and on Reddit say this sounds like me spoiling our semi-final match. I promise there is genuinely nothing to infer from what I say about whether we win or lose it, I’m just happy to have another match to enjoy playing and watching no matter what happens! Hope you enjoy when it comes around - I know I will, regardless of whether we win or lose. All the best!

This was another very exciting and close match. It was definitely unfortunate to end up losing after such a strong start, but that comeback from UCL is greater than any other I've ever seen, and at least we still have another chance. It was close enough that a single question going differently (and there were some close buzzer races) could have changed the outcome of the match, although that's also true of a lot of our matches. UCL were definitely a very nice team, though, so congratulations to them!

What a comeback. It looked like Trinity were gonna run away but that answer by Izzatdust to get them to 0 from -10 just woke them up and you could see Trinity were getting more and more nervous as time went on and Kang was probably just beaten to the buzzer by Finlay on a couple occasions. This was probably the best match of the tournament since Manchester's win over Trinity.

I think my heartbeat fluctuated too much during that game ;). Really thought UCL had blown it at one stage on -10 with just under half the time used up. But despite that and FIVE penalties, like Lazarus, they rose from the dead with a good 18/30 bonus to semi-compensate :). That's the second time Trinity has completely squandered a big lead - their chances are still good in the repechage but not sure they'll win it all now - maybe the first all-London final since 1996? We'll just have to see.

One gripe I have against Trinity is the signalling during a starter to decide who will answer it. It is unfair and against the spirit of the game, when the rules clearly say "you may not confer". Other teams have done it too, so I guess the fault lies with the producers for not enforcing their policies or communicating properly to the teams. Now that that is off my chest, thank you, UCL, Trinity and Cosmic Pumpkin for that nailbiter.
@sunway13747 ай бұрын
"Conferring" is discussing the answer. Signalling who answers starter question is not conferring. Also, it would be difficult to monitor fairly, teams will work out secret signals to use.
@zaphbrox82397 ай бұрын
@@sunway1374 classic letter of the law vs spirit of the law dilemma. The spirit should always supercede the letter. Sure, teams could come up with clever ways to signal, but if it is clearly stated that any form of communication is prohibited during starters, that should cover it, and I'd say most people would adhere to it. As I stated in my earlier comment, I'm not faulting Trinity here. Its probably something the producers should address to maintain the spirit of the game.
@sunway13747 ай бұрын
@zaphbrox8239 i am not sure your interpretation of the spirit of the rule is accurate. It could be only your opinion or preference. I have watched UC for 30 years. Signalling does happen although usually more subtle. It's never an issue.
@gooscarguitar7 ай бұрын
I think non-verbal signals are fine, especially when it's as simple as "don't buzz yet". You can't discuss the question just with hand gestures.
@whateverkatana7 ай бұрын
@@zaphbrox8239 Going to have to agree with the other commenters there: if the spirit of the law was to prevent any and all _communication_, then the law would state exactly that. Conferring relates to discussing the answer itself, not who is going to answer, and I also don't see how this would be unsportsmanlike or hurt the spirit of the game.

Have they ever done a university challenge type competition between US and UK universities?
@raphaeleyald7 ай бұрын
It should be done. After all, University Challenge is based upon the U.S. television show G.E. College Bowl, which aired from 1959 to 1970. At about the same time, there was a U.S. television show which featured college debating teams. A debating team came here from Oxford to face the U.S. champion. All I remember was that the Oxford team didn’t take the match seriously. They were more interested in clever remarks than logic. But, yes, I wish there would be competition between U.S. and U.K. teams - that would be great television.

I guess any team could have agreed on hand signals ahead of the game to indicate who should and shouldn't buzz.
@chrisg30307 ай бұрын
Good call. Kang just seemed to be telling the other team members to let Jaksina answer. But as far as I can judge no information passed to or from Jaksina himself before he did answer. Still, no conferring should mean no conferring whoever does it and whatever it's about.
@kevindennehy71057 ай бұрын
It's not considered to be consulting. There was a debate on this some years ago after a similar incident. Kang did it earlier in the game, he held his hand up when the question continued after an incorrect interruption by UCL. As long as nothing is said to indicate the answer it's deemed OK. It's just clever answer management.

@@slightlygrouchy Given that you find what I wrote "completely unintelligible", I am not surprised you find "Bakunin or Kropotkin" incredibly difficult. Even though that is fairly common knowledge over there. I do not really remember "a whole bunch of other questions he answered", unless it is something very easy. Anyway... having that completely annoyed face at the end that says "I am doing everything for you and you cannot even get one question right", is completely off the mark.

@@s-6019 Prove to me that anyone from Poland or anywhere else from Eastern Europe who went to high school finds those answers easy. And prove to me that those questions bear a connection to Poland and the rest of "that part of Europe" and and these things are covered over there in school or elsewhere in public life. And prove to me that those qustions are generally considered asy! As for what you remember, nobody gives a toss. There were several over the last few years. As for his "face": he was disappointed, and sometimes it's impossible for anyone to hide that disappointment. No shame in that! You yourself are even unable to cope with a single KZbin video without launching into a personal, shameful attack and without posting lies. And you have completely ignored the fact that you lied about most most of his answers bearing a connection to Eastern Europe, too.

@nope2dat & @jh_4562 - you kiddos and your teammates are the bees knees. Excellent match - so many super tough questions. You were up against a superb team, so great to see you pull it off. Looking forward to seeing you in the weeks to come. Congrats to all and a big thanks to CP for the up. My heart has been running a little slow lately so this definitely got it kickstarted! 😵💫

Don't be so harsh on him, you'd be absolutely demoralized too if a lead of 105 points melted right before your eyes when you've been carrying the whole team.

He's throughout the match wearing his heart on his sleeves and understandably disappointed. He might well be neurodivergent but most importantly has a great breadth of knowledge. I'd give him some slack unless we're going to bring up UCL Hall's hand gestures towards the end, leaving little to one's imagination.

Not really. He played passionately and seemed pretty devastaed to have lost.

@@late8641 There is a clear difference in 'looking' dejected but keeping up with the spirit of fair play and acting like a sore loser.

Yes exactly. If you watch the 3 matches Trinity has lost, he has never once applauded the opposing team… Shame.
