Bristol has harbour and prospered from trade since early years, but it has also made a fortune through centuries of slave trade. Historical buildings can be seen not only in the old town but also in many other places. Harbourside ships, large cranes, and former warehouses also tell you the history.
The paintings of the pseudonymous street artist Banksy, who started painting in the 1990s, are well known, but you can also see art by other artists. From good independent shops to arcades and markets, shopping is fun and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars as well. The University of Bristol has most of its faculties on the large Clifton Campus. It is part of the Russell Group, and also a Red Brick.
港があり古くから貿易で栄えた街ですが、何世紀にも渡る奴隷貿易で富を成してきた側面もあります。歴史のある建物は、旧市街だけでなく街のあちこちに見られ、ハーバーサイドの船、大型クレーン、倉庫跡などからも、街の歴史がわかります。
1990年代から現れた、匿名のストリート・アーティスト「バンクシー」の絵が知られますが、街のあちこちに、地元のアーティスト等のアートも見られます。気の利いた個人商店からアーケードにマーケットまで、買い物も楽しく、カフェ、レストラン、バーも充実しています。ブリストル大学は大きなクリフトン・キャンパスにほとんどの学部が揃っています。ラッセルグループに入っていて、レッド・ブリックでもあります。
