Just a question that has nothing to with our debate but : why not Pantheon-Assas for economy and management ? (not business) they are pretty good too. And they belong to Sorbonne université so It might be a nice choice too. Even if dauphine is good.

In France, Panthéon-Sorbonne Paris 1 is the real Sorbonne. University Paris-Sorbonne Paris 4 is just the largest counterfeit of the Sorbonne.

Actually,Sorbonne UniversitéS (with a S please), at the begining wasn't allowed to be named like this. however Valérie Pécresse, the secretary of research and higher education allowed because she didn't want to loose more time to establish the association of Paris 2,4,6. futhermore Sorbonne Universités will be more a association university than a strictly University

Pantheon-Sorbonne, is a university created in the 70s when they disamble the University of Paris (which was formed by the faculty of Humanities and languages known as The Sorbonne; the faculty of science and the faculty of Law) Panthéon-Sorbonne has nothing to do with humanities. The subjects you can learn there are Law, political science, economy etc They just share the building of the Sorbonne and the Pantheon building (of the former faculty of law) That's why it s called Pantheon Sorbonne

Well, I don't know about HESAM or Paris novi mundi. But I know for sure, that the aim of Sorbonne Universités is the reunion of PI, PII, PVI and more. Around 2016 if everything goes well. But It can be more complicated for HESAM since the insitutions involved are very different (EHESS, EPHE you know what I mean). And the Chancelerie des Universités, decided to give the administration of the building to Paris 1 but I don't think It means much. They can take it back. But is an endless debate

Paris sorbonne U is not the official heir! I'm a student of Pantheon Sorbonne University, I consider by the facts that Pantheon Sorbonne U is a heir of Sorbonne Faculty. Futhermore, check on the Chancellerie des Universités de Paris website. The bulding of Sorbonne (in paris 5th) is administrated by Panthéon Sorbonne U. By the way, you can find some humanity studies in Paris 5, and Paris 7, (you are right for Paris 2 and 6)

If you think Paris Sorbonne is the only heir of Sorbonne faculty, you are again wrong, because, Sorbonne Nouvelle ( Paris 3th) teachs humanities as well!!

Paris 1, because they share the building of the pantheon and the building of the sorbonne, has been later then named : Pantheon-Sorbonne. Because firstly the universities were only known by their numbers. So, nothing to do with the Sorbonne : because the official heir was and still is : Paris-Sorbonne. Paris 1 teach humanities too, due to the fact that many teachers of the ancient Sorbonne, as I said, choose to teach there.

My dear friend, I know all of this. You re right the Sorbonne was the faculty of humanities of the ancient University of Paris. Which has been disambled as you say correctly in 1969. But what happen exactly then ? They choose to preserved the Sorbonne, by creating Paris-Sorbonne. But, many of the teachers were not happy with the way teaching was made at the Sorbonne. (Which leads to the revolts of may68), so many of them choose to go another university which being created then : Paris 1.

Your are wrong. Sorbonne was a University of Paris' faculty. In 1970 University of Paris was disembled by Faure Act. Pantheon Sorbonne U, and Paris Sorbonne U were created at the same time, in 1970. Patnheon Sorbonne U chose to amalgamate Pantheon Faculty and Sorbonne faculty. it is an heir of sorbonne university! You can study, humanities there, such as cinema, philosophy, art, history, geography, history of art...

this is history, if it makes you laught good for you dude ... Still the main inheritor of the faculty of humanities of the university of Paris (the Sorbonne) is Paris-Sorbonne. Entirely dedicated of poursuing the project of the former Sorbonne. Pantheon-Sorbonne is a new university sharing the building of the Sorbonne, and introducing some new subjects (they don't teach humanities, only philosophy and history) Basicaly they re quite the same institution but one is new and the other is a heir.

the real descendant of the Sorbonne (which is the Sorbonne and has always been anyway) is Paris-Sorbonne and not Pantheon Sorbonne. Pantheon Sorbonne is a descendant of the faculty of law and economy of the university of paris. The Sorbonne was the faculty of humanities, and it still exists : Paris-Sorbonne. Pantheon sorbonne had the right to take the name of Sorbonne, because they share the building of the Sorbonne with the university of Paris-Sorbonne. But That's all.

So paris 1, is a entire creation due to the disharmony at the time between some teachers of the Sorbonne, who didn't wanted to continue with the Sorbonne afterwards may68 when the government chose to preserve it by creating Paris-Sorbonne. What about Sorbonne-nouvelle paris 3 ? Well, firstly they teach language and not humanity, and secondly they are a another creation. Paris III was created for quite the same reasons as Paris 1 : they wanted to create a nouvelle (new) Sorbonne.

These new U are the reunion of so many different institutions, that it has no sense now to link it with the Sorbonne. But just for you to know : if P4 had the right to be renamed Sorbonne université (with P6 and P2) it's for a reason... And P3 then claimed to add the name Sorbonne on their PRES too after that,They just need it to have international credibility and since the label of the name Sorbonne belong to the city hall, they can give it to anybody. But Sorbonne université will stil be P4.

Yep you're right, because they didn't wanted to give the name Sorbonne to anybody. But since it's the only thing people know out there and since P4 P1 and P3 allready had the name, and use it a lot. They gave it. So now we have Sorbonne universitéS haha Sorbonne paris cité and HESAM which has Sorbonne in it too. They don't wanna decide who has more the right to have it, because they don't wanna disvantage anybody. Besides everybody claim to be the heir of the Sorbonne, they need the name

C'est une situation assez triste quelque part, parce qu'elle alimente la guéguerre permanente entre tout le monde. Mais remarque, ça permet à beaucoup d'étudiant de se réclamer de la Sorbonne en même temps. Enfin bref, bon je retourne à mes affaires. Bon courage pour ton mémoire et bonne continuation ^^. Et puis P1 ou P4 c'est pareil en fin de compte. C'est juste une autre manière d'enseigner je crois. Allez courage et ciao :)

So I don't think I was wrong. But you were not completely wrong either. But you know, whatever ? I mean, the only thing you have to do if you wanna study in any university in france is to see what they teach and how they teach it. They re all diferent. And, another point : whatever, because around 2016 Paris 1, 2,3,4 etc will all disapear ! Paris 1 will become HESAM, Paris 4 : Sorbonne université, and Paris III : Sorbonne paris cité. And to know who is the heir of who, lost is sense since.

mais de rien. Toujours content de donner un coup de main. Les étrangers ne risquent pas d'être plus avancés qu'avant avec notre débat. La situation des Universités en France est très compliquée. Quant à savoir, qui est l'héritière de la Sorbonne, c'est un débat sans fin. Disons que La Sorbonne en tant que telle est morte sans enfant, voilà. C'est que semble dire la Mairie de Paris. Les U, se réclament toutes de son nom, parce qu'elles savent bien que toute leur visibilité dépend de ça.

To conclude : only paris-sorbonne is an heir of the Sorbonne, because as I said, the Sorbonne was the faculty of humanities of university of paris. Paris 5, Paris 2, Paris 6 and Paris 7 have nothing to do with it. These U, have been created on the ashes of faculties of law and science of the U of Paris. Nanterre (paris 10) has more to do with the Sorbonne, because it was a center of teaching of the Sorbonne for the first years.

it is more complicated than what you have just written. The forming of HESAM or Sorbonne UniversitéS or Sorbonne Paris Cité as "PRES" were created just to increase in classification (Shanghai for example). Hesam is a cooperation of many instituts, grandes écoles etc... maybe it will be an university but in Paris Novi Mundi Univeristy and not HESAM. Sorbonne Universités will be rather a federal university than a real university :)

actually, Panthéon- Assas is the best university for studying Law (except for international law, where Panthéon-Sorbonne is better). For economics, Panthéon Sorbonne still better than Panthéon-Assas. The masters of research are really great. a lot of students in Panthéon-Assas go to Panthéon-Sorbonne to study economics after "Licence économie" (bachelor of arts - economics). Today, the big U (Sorbonne UniversitéS, or HESAM) do not impact the reputation of Masters, and the ranking :)

Otherwise you're rigth, it is better to know what they teach and how they teach it. However I still on my position. There is no One official heir of Sorbonne.
