University of Toronto: what you should know before coming to UofT

Hi! Here is 5 things I wish I knew before coming to the University of Toronto! This is mostly based on Life Sciences since that is what I went to UofT for. Everyone has their own opinion, so this video is purely my opinion (St.George Campus) on the school and what I wish I knew before coming here.

Although this was made more for LifeSci students, overall the tips can be geared toward any field of study. UofT is a great school for Eng, so I definitely recommend it!

Hi Alessia, thanks for the guide it was really helpful! One question, I was admitted to the studies in humanities under The Faculty of Arts and Science. Is it possible to switch up to let's say a social science program if I don't feel compatible with my current program? Thanks!

Hello! If you are under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, you can technically do any program on the Arts and Sciences list here: artsci.calendar.utoronto.ca/listing-program-subject-areas#L I was admitted for lifesci but I am doing a minor in Art History! As long as you stay in the faculty listings! You just have to make sure you are taking all your prerequisites. If you were admitted to the humanities program, most of the first year courses are guided as they are prerequisites for most of the humanities programs. So if you wanted to do lets just say a major is psychology, you would need to take the first year psych class and have the prerequisites. I would definitely go and check out the requirements before choosing your courses! Hope that helped!

Hey I got a quick question. I’ve been accepted to UofT’s mathematical and physical science program . However I was wondering if it was possible after the first year to switch courses and for example major in Computer Science… Is this possible? Also big thanks for all the tips on you channel! Hello! If you are part of the Faculty of Arts and Science, you can major or minor in any program that is part of arts and sciences. You can definitely switch your major ( at first I enrolled doing a major in cell bio but then realized I enjoyed human bio courses more, so I switched a month later ). You just have to see the prerequisites and if the program is open or limited ( open= you don't have to apply, just enroll, limited= you have to apply). One of my friends came for mathematics, but switched to something more phycology based by the end of first year, so you can absolutely switch your majors. Hope this helps!

Hi Alessia! I'm about to be a freshman in UofT Life Science for Fall 2023! I've been doing some research about courses for the first year, and many people say that it's good to pick prerequisite courses for the program I want to take in the second year, and pick the electives to complete the breadth requisitions. What would you suggest that I do if I haven't thought of what program I want to be in yet?

hello! I think taking your general first year courses along with electives is fine for the first year, but I would still advise you to check out the arts and science program list so you can see what programs you might be interested in. This is important because you might need certain first year courses to get into limited programs. If a program is open, then you can take the courses whenever, but the earlier the better! I agree that it is a good idea to complete the breadth requirements in first year. I did that but you always have summer classes if you need:) I would suggest taking first year seminar courses as well since they are a good high school to university transition! Most of the prerequisites are your general first year lifesci courses anyway, so don't stress that you don't know what program you want to do yet! Hope this helps :)

Hello! For Life sciences they only look at your grades, but for other programs like engineering or health sciences you need a supplementary application which verys between programs. My scores were pretty high but every program has a different threshold, so you should definately look at the requirements :) hope this helped!!

hey quick question coming from someone who’s going to u of t life science this year! is it possible to major in something like biology or psychology, but then also major or minor in something like history or philosophy at the same time? because i kinda want to do a bit of both (science but also humanities)

Hi! Yes of course it's possible! I was accepted for lifesci so I took all my general lifesci courses in first year. Now I am in my second year and I am doing a Major in Human Biology, and a double minor in Immunology and Art History. If you go to the arts and sciences program list, you can see all the program options there!

I am a lifesci student and doing an art history minor and I have a friend in lifesci doing a music minor! Hello! I am not really sure about mathematical and physical sciences because I am not in that program so I can not speak from personal experience. However, one my friends I met in first year was admitted for that program and she said it was very hard. She actually ended up switching. However, if it is something you enjoy and you work hard, you should be okay! It is definitely hard and most STEM programs are competitive, but if you put in the work and get through first year your GPA will increase.

Hello! I think it depends on what you want to do after graduation and also on your interests. A specialist is super specific to one thing, whereas if you do a double major in two things that are similar you still get that diversity while staying in the same field of study! :)

high school gpa's are a joke - i feel bad for kids with fake 90% gpa's that go to a real university - not because UofT is tough but because your HS was a joke

Hi! Most Ontario high schools are all the same unless you go to a private school, and the first year of university is a hard transition for most people, regardless of your high school :) And UofT is very tough and competitive in many of the programs compared to a lot of other Ontario universities. It should not be glamorized just to not scare anyone.
