John Twist shows how to align the front wheels of this MGB using a 2x4, some lag bolts, and a lot of patience. Sometimes the MG body is too narrow to be worked on at an alignment shop, learn how to Do It Yourself here!

I just welded up one like yours out of 1 inch steel tube and hope to try it out on my MG tc 1949 didn’t think about moving the car beck and forth thanks great video

Pull a length of string down one side of the car making sure the string is tied to a jack stand sitting slightly behind the rear tire. Position the string across the centers of both wheels. Now you can touch string to front wheel and easily see if it has toe-in, toe-out, and how much when compared to other side using same string method. Keep in mind adjustments on left and right tie rods will affect the center position of the steering wheel so start the entire process with the steering wheel centered.

Teal blue, my favorite color on a MGB. Was used around 1972-3 and makes for a beautiful case especially with an Okra Interior!

Had to change out both gussets then a friend set it up on his alignment machine and used VW setting on the computer to get the proper settings. Worked perfectly.

Totally agree on resting the tyres ie rolling the car backwards and forwards after making adjustments. About centering the steering wheel, there should be a hole in the rack in which you insert a pin and it locks the rack in the dead ahead position. Then you carry out the fine tuning of the wheels at the tie rods and then if needed the steering can be set to straight ahead position. Its a repeatation, but there are the 3 adjustments to manipulate, tie rods, steering rack or box dead ahead position and steering wheel.

I do my own alignments at home.....using just a steel tape measure. I keep the steering wheel straight...as i drive in...i find the one front tire that's straight...and the one tire that's cocked-crooked...and i only adjust cocked tire...with 1/16" toe-in using the straight tire (and straight steering wheel) as my reference. Works best with new tires...not worn past 50%

Hi, Love the 2/4 set up. Maybe an idea would be to screw a triangle of plywood from the horizontal to the vertical. This would keep in place the 90 degree. Just an idea. Thanks for everything

yeah, thinking the same thing...he needs to brace those flimsy 90 degree 2x4's...he could be off as much as an 1/8" gravity flop.

Perhaps the alignment tool could be improved by adding a horizontal section at the height of the axle then having a screw at both the front and back of the tyre one both the LH and RH side of the car. When both screws are equal the you have a neutral alignment.

No, doing it that way would require the jog to be very accurately made, this guys method is sound it is using the jig to compare so it's just enabling you to visualise to difference.

Can you adjust an Austin Healey alignment this way? The Healey has one rod connecting both wheels. You spin the rod one way or the other to make the front wheels move out or in.

I had to install a motor mount and had to drop the steering rack. I though I marked the connector from the wheel at the firewall to the shaft, but apparently I messed it up because the wheel is not aligned lol

A laser measure works with .2mm accuracy use it on front then back of tyres to find toe out and in

After working on the steering of the car, particularly tie Rod end replacement, this will get you in the ballpark to go to an alignment shop, particularly if you’re not close to one. Other than that, a shop that would do an alignment for only 10euros isn’t a place I’d take my car. Here it’s $75-100, which at current exchange rates works out to about 85-100 Euros, the vast majority of alignment machines are electronic, one price fits all.
