The application advisor at my school always told us that applying for a deferred place at oxbridge reduces your chance of an offer by about half, so I’d imagine that did have quite a big impact. But the gap year was definitely the right path for you so there’s no point overthinking that decision! ❤️
@teamcori5 жыл бұрын
lucytansley That's good to know, I recently got rejected and also applied for deferred entry. I requested feedback and so it would be interesting to see what they say.
@MD-wy9zm5 жыл бұрын
Couldn't she apply, get in, then ask to defer? Or is that not possible in the UK?
@user-ql1ng1xn6s5 жыл бұрын
M D No normally you have to tell the university when you apply because it’s like you’re reserving a space at the university, so especially if their acceptance rates are low it’s like you’re either in now or not. There’s also the loss of knowledge in the subject over a year that the university wouldn’t really want, which is why in STEM subjects specifically it’s advised not to take a gap year because it lowers your chances at an offer

What you said about cancer, is so true. My mum passed away on 23rd December 2015, when I was just 13. I find it is better to speak about death, rather than shy away and not address it. I am very open about her passing and I will sometimes bring it up in conversation so that I won’t be sad constantly, not with the intention of changing the mood or asking for sympathy as that is so wrong. People need to speak about these topics so that they can be happy and content. It’s worse if you only think about a relative who has passed and not address their death as you won’t be able to get over it and it will always linger behind you. I know I will never forget my mum but I don’t want her death to overshadow the rest of my life. I have a life to live and I know that my mum would have wanted me to carry on thriving and she wouldn’t want me to not fulfil my life.

Top UK universities do tend to prefer really 'focused' candidates who know their field inside out, but I'm glad you regained your confidence eventually because there's so much more to being a person than knowing everything about one's field! I definitely don't know that much about my own field compared to my peers, but we all have diverse strengths anyway. I doubt many of the other candidates who may have been much more well-read on biology would've necessarily had the well-roundedness you have, your unique personal insight, communicative skills, etc. Being a youtuber who films and edit videos in itself is a pretty niche skill. Hope you get to celebrate your idiosyncratic strengths and am glad you didn't let this define you :-)

I'm also 18 and on a gap year after being medically disqualified from the United States Military Academy at West Point this past July. It's so awesome to see someone else the same age also in the same boat as me, and just watching some of your videos, it's evident that you've grown tremendously from just the past several months. I've grown more in the past 5 months than I have in any other time period in my life, and I really do think my disqualification and this gap year is a blessing in disguise. On rejection, this gap year has also given me a bit more perspective on college. I was just rejected from Yale last week (my reaction is on my channel), but I now realize more than ever that I am not defined by the school I go to, it's what I do and who I am as a person that matters the most. It's refreshing to see someone else also be able to handle rejection so maturely. Keep the videos coming, Jade! I look forward to following your journey on your gap year just as I'm filming mine on my channel! Work hard, dream big -Raye

Looking back now, it was the best decision I ever made. For anyone going through hardship, especially if you are young, please do not be impulsive. Things can change in an instant, you have no idea. Be flexible in everything you do because there will be a time when things are not so tough … and you deserve to enjoy them.

Thank you for being such a beautiful person Jade ❤️ So honest and not in the slightest bit judgemental of others. I feel like this will have helped a lot of people out there. I know I've had my fair share of failures and it helped me. Sometimes I think we are just meant to fail so that we go on to do something we might not otherwise have done but like you say, at the time, we feel so bad about ourselves, as if we are not capable and are never going to accomplish anything in life. I believe all of us have a part to play in life though, we don't neccessarily have to go on to study at the best institutions or have big jobs. Do what makes you happy guys and please don't let others dictate the path you take ❤️

I was in the same situation as you last year. Got an interview at Queen's college for Classics and got rejected- it hurt when I saw the email eventhough I already knew I hadn't been accepted in as my interviews went horribly. It was made even worse when my head of year announced to my year that I was waiting on a response from Oxford before I got my rejection so it was tough. But I didn't let it stop me- and even after spending a week at Oxford I realised that it wasn't the university for me so in a way I'm sort of relieved I got rejected because I'm so much happier at my current university than I know I would have been at Oxford. Plus at least I do get to say that I had an interview at Oxford and still attend one of the best universities in the UK. Rejection is always going to be a big part of life and learning to pick yourself up again is important because it's not the end of the world. At all.

Thank you so much for this video, I am in year 11, and I took an entry exam to get a scholarship to a really fancy private school for sixth form, and I got asked back for an interview, but I decided not to go so I emailed them to withdraw my application. Sometimes I regret that decision and I feel selfish for turning down such a great opportunity, but I didn't feel good about myself when I went there. Two people got in from my school, and sometimes I find myself comparing myself to them, and thinking I am too dumb and would've never got in, but now I feel that everything happens for a reason. I know that our stories are quite different, Oxbridge is a lot bigger and so much more effort goes into it, and I can't even begin to imagine the devastation you must've felt, but I agree that it isn't healthy to doubt yourself, and happiness and personal growth are so much more important, keep doing what you're doing, you're such a beautiful soul x

Honestly Oxford Cambridge aren’t what they used to be, I know people put so much on that but these days the red bricks are so strong your degree from any of them will be fantastic, biology at Liverpool for example is amazing

Jade I see you've got a lot of comments saying you're talking too much about this or being insensitive... But so many people are rejected from oxbridge! I bet you've inspired many people to do some people are gonna need videos about it. After getting good GCSE results many people have hinted at me applying to oxbridge. I know it's a guarantee of a worthwhile degree with good teaching and it will immensely impress employers but... I don't know if it's for me. I get superiority complexes really easily and don't want to be someone who acts better than everyone else bc of the uni. Also chances are I'll get rejected not only bc so many do, but because most of the people applying will be better than me both academically (don't think I'm gonna get straight a*s as if I get A*A*AA it will be wonderful) and also I'm probably not going to have as good a personal statement and be as good in the interviews. I just doubt it's worth the time, effort and emotional burden of the application process, when I'm not even that enthusiastic about the idea (obviously if I did get in I'd be over the moon) and I just don't feel it's for me. I'm all for trying your best - I say people who don't try are scared to know that they have an upper limit to what they can achieve and what that limit is. But in this scenario I'm that person. I don't put myself down, I know my ability, but I'm simply not gonna be one of the best applicants. For the record I wanna be an Astrophysicist so most courses I'm looking at are physics and astrophysics. Ibz talked about having an intuition that Cambridge was where he was meant to be... But I'm just not feeling it. I don't think it would be right to apply purely due to pressure and expectations from others but I don't want to not aim high. What do I do? ❤️

Do they not have a pool at Oxford? At Cambridge if a college has more candidates that are "good enough" than they have places they will put some in the pool (not always the worst ones, they'll keep the ones they think fit the best at the college). Then the colleges that didn't have enough applicants of the required standard will pick people from there and interview them in January. The interview system isn't perfect at picking the best candidates and I know people who were rejected, then reapplied and ended up doing really well.

@UnjadedJade I actually applied to Biology at Brasenose as well last year and also got rejected before even being invited to an interview. I requested feedback and it said exactly the same thing as yours did. I finished school in Germany prior to applying and knew beforehand that I should have taken one specific course to be accepted so I expected the rejection. However, this hasn’t even been mentioned in my feedback. For me it was also very frustrating as it was quite clear to me that such a top university does not invest the time to give people advice to become better and therefore increase their chances of being accepted in the future.
