This feels like the Halo equivalent of a species in Mass Effect discovering the Galactic Community mid Reaper Harvest...

The Raloi was discovered by the Asari in 2184 and in 2186, destroyed all their orbital telescopes and satellites to avoid being attacked by the Reapers. Basically, the Raloi’s attempt to convince the Reapers they were too primitive to be harvested.

On a galactic timescale that's basically what happened to humanity. Literally went from discovering FTL travel to a Reaper harvest within a single lifetime. Best part is the Prothians slowed the reapers down enough for us to advance far enough to be a target as well as leave the ruins in our solar system to get us their 200ish years faster.

I remember reading this in Silentium. It stuck out to me so intensely because of the tragedy of it all. It made me realize that, despite all the time they had, there were still beings out there who couldn't be saved. The vastness of the galaxy comes to mind too. The Forerunners were at war with the Flood for hundreds of years, and in that time, some civilizations lived their lives, completely unaware to the impending doom of the galaxy. Really brings to mind our place in the cosmos, and how ultimately tiny our troubles can seem to be.

Probably the lore story is based on real-world string theory that posits 10 or 11 dimensions, with the "extra" ones being inaccessible because they're crumpled up to far subatomic size.
@FlavioSantos-uw1mr
@FlavioSantos-uw1mr Ай бұрын
That's not really true, yes you can't imagine an extra dimension because you didn't evolve for it, in the same way you can't imagine a new color, but mathematically you can test and prove the existence of other dimensions, for example if one of the fundamental forces behaves in a strange way, it could be an indication of different spatial geometry than was expected.

the forerunners had an option to safe the sentient species: move away further from the signal at superluminal speed, and aim a telescope at them. then they would get older light and could study them and how they went on until the halo event. very fine study of the light may even allow for gene level scanning and reconstruction. if not, at least there is now a honerable archive of them. and in any case, their minds joined the domain as all does

It's one of the strongest sci-fi concepts in Halo imo. The idea that humanity lost its rightful inheritance yet still held on to some of its ancient memory. However, being humbled and reduced in power, we lost the ability to fully realise the truths in our collective history, letting it pass from history, to legend and finally myth. Stories that still echo through millenia and ultimately come full circle as humanity reclaims that which was taken from us.

With the Halo's firing having some space-time effects, I wouldn't be surprised if it was found to be the Endless that detected it and sent the signal, and that started that whole thing. You detect something immense about to happen, send a signal and then get hit with a Halo pulse. Not knowing if it was directed or not. You'd shut right up. @fadelsukoco3092

To be fair to the Forerunners, they most likely would have been capable of conducting numerous Conservation sampling operations at any given time due to the sheer size of the Forerunner Ecumene, and collecting those sanples would be relatively minimal risk for the personnel involved since the Forerunners strip any civilization they can of the capability to defend themselves militarily. The main issue would be trying to acvount for ALL sentuent and sapient species, as despite the Forerunners having absolutely uncontested supremacy over the galaxy from the fall of Charum Hakkor to the re-emergence of the Flood, it's unlikely that they would have mapped and kept tabs on every syar system capable of harvoring life in the galaxy. Even of they managed to conserve sanples of all intelligent species known to them, there might be tons more that were outside of Forerunner control/influence or were not yet discovered, most likely almost all of yhese being pre-Slipspace cultures. According to Silentium, a total of 123 sapient species were catalogued from the 3 million worlds the Forerunners directly controlled, though it is unknown how many they would gave also managed to conserve from workds they knew of outside of their control. Even so, it was likely nowhere close to the total potential sapient species that existed at the time, due to the Flood steadily taking over the galaxy by that point and the Forerunners deeming saving any more to be too costly. On the bright side, any uninfected species still kicking by that time would at least be spares the much worse fate of being consumed and used as a tool by the Flood.

Yeah! Another episode! I don't think I can agree with your understanding of sentient. If an animal can realize that its alive and one day will die and is sad about it, that should be sentience manifest. I don't think just because an animal is alive and has wants and desires like food and not wanting to get eaten means it has sentience. We look at dogs as if they are sentient but it's just us putting our own emotions onto them. I would say elephants would have a better argument of being closer to sentience than anything else on this planet besides humans.
@Chrisspru

self awareness happens in any living thing to a degree. dogs are pretty high on the sentience spectrum. fulls self awareness is achieved ones conceptual self realization (mirror test or similar) is passed. peak self awareness beyond that, civilisatory awaeeness, furthermore requires an awareness of death and ongoing life. animals that pass the mirror test and have ancestor ritualism pass that. if a species now also has deliberate teaching to the young, requesting of teaching, deliberate technique sharing and is curious, that species has reached sapience escape velocity.

Sentience is ability to think, insects on up to us are Sentient. Your macaw and dog and cat and horse and pig and cow are all Sentient beings; mind you, those thoughts are rather crude basic and rudimentary and are second line to "instinct", but they are capable of thinking. Sapience is a higher level, currently we THINK we're the only Sapience species in the UNIVERSE(Human Hubris) and on the planet. It is the ability to pass the Turing Test, pass the Mirror Test, have "Free Will", have a "Soul", make a vast planetary civilization, have Religion, try to find meaning in existance, etc.

I saw one science article that said microorganisms are actually pretty adept at "speaking" to and coordinating with each other in more ways than proteins, enzymes, chemical reactions, lipids, and just using cellular machinery; and that we need to understand those methodologies to better combat them.

The Forerunners wiped out the Precursors because of Humanity being meant to receive the mantle of responsibility, after the Forerunners were told they'd be the ones inheriting it. The indexed species were actually stored in siluxes (or however you spell that) on the inside of the ring, and you can see some that are actually still storing humans in Halo: Infinite’s campaign. So that’s how species survived the firing despite, as you said, being at ground zero. As for why the surface is habitable I actually don’t know; it’s always kinda just rolled in with “oh it’s part of the conservation measure” even though it shouldn’t technically be needed for that measure. I would guess that it was potentially a way to store reconstituted animals after the firing but before they were packed up and shipped off to their respective worlds; out of universe though I think it’s really just because ringworlds as a concept are man-made superstructures meant to be like a habitable space station of sorts. So Bungie just followed that already set precedent. Hope this helps :)

I can’t recall the specifics of it, but as I remember the FIRST meeting of the two was in the “Fall of Reach” book. That meeting is still the canonical first meeting. Then the so called second “first meeting” that we see in the Halo Reach game is actually just a shard of Cortana’s AI. It was studying the big forerunner artifact in the ice to get Alpha Halos coordinates; which is then taken and reunited with the main shard that’s already on the Pillar of Autumn so that they could make that fateful last jump. Can’t remember if that was actually stated in game or if it was one of the things 343 had to retroactively fix while they were fixing the rest of the game’s inconsistencies. Hope this helps :)

@@DarkenedSkies Yeah it’s not very clear in game and I’m pretty sure that it was actually specified later by 343 to fix the lore. Bungie had an interesting relationship with the books when they were at the helm. Taking the stance of: the books are canon the same as the games, BUT they reserved the right to over rule anything that the books said. They didn’t really care for other people to be in control of their story and kinda just put up with it because of Microsoft. So I think initially the game did kind of retcon some stuff from the books, but then after the fact 343i came in and did a pretty good patch job in order to keep both sources fully canon

This would be a metal as fuck backstory for a new species in a future Halo game - one of these uncontacted planets, who were on the cusp of space travel, make contact with the Forerunners moments(or perhaps days) before the Halo rings activated. Just as their civilization learns of the Flood, the Forerunners and the galactic civilization around them, as is said in the video, suddenly they're deafened and blinded by an unimaginable energy pulse that fries all the electronics on their planet at once. And then they are all wiped out. Except this species does not go extinct or disappear into the eons forever, no, somehow for some reason, be it because of unique qualities of their DNA, or the atmosphere of their planet, or isolated populations living in protected areas underground, or some combination of these things, significant amounts of the population survive. No more than 1% of the total population survive, all civilization as they knew it was destroyed and reset, but the species itself survives, and rebuilds on their own, without being re-seeded. And because they were never re-seeded, the descendants of that surviving 1% re-discovered space travel and slipspace technology much faster than their documented and re-seeded counterparts. Allowing them to become a space faring species, technologically on-par with the Covenant, but extremely isolationist in their views of the galaxy. (the last time they said hi all life as they knew it ended on their planet) A species that survived the purge and went on to write religious texts/historical documents about the "great dying" would be so fucking metal dude... I can see them being extremely xenophobic, and probably being disgusted by the Covenant for worshipping the gods of their destruction. Perhaps they've taken to the exact opposite approach of studying Forerunner artifacts and history, in order to understand the species that destroyed the galaxy, rather than worship them. They may find common ground with humanity - safeguarding the technology that caused the first "dying" to prevent a second. Or they may decide the mere existence of this technology is not only an affront to their culture, but a danger to the entire galaxy. Unlike the Covenant and Humanity, they would actually have some first hand experience with the rings to make that call. (To Atriox) "You do not understand what these ... things are" (To Chief) "And you do not fully grasp just how important it is that nobody ever use them again" (to both) "We did not come here to make enemies, but if you choose to protect the rings of death, then enemies we shall be." _activates armored suit/energy shield_

We know the Covenant remnant still exist, as much of Sangheili and former covenant territory is embroiled in civil war. The Banished may take to scavenging Forerunner artifacts like their Covenant forebearers but for different purposes. Here's how I see the concept going, the UNSC back at earth and the remaining colonies has rebuilt their fleet and sent an armada to the ark, on a quest of rescuing and reuniting the scattered remnants of the first fleet. At the same time ONI is on it's own mission to recover Forerunner artifacts, with the war over and the revelation that we are the inheritors of their technology, there will be lots of research and recovery to be done. The Covenant Remnant at the same time send their own expedition to the Ark, attempting their own pilgrimage, not the "great journey" per se but a rebranding of it to be an actual physical journey to recover holy artifacts of the gods. The Banished of course are already there, fighting with the UNSC survivors. And just as the most chaotic three-way fight since the end of the Human-Covenant War is about to begin, suddenly ships in all fleets start exploding one by one. First the Banished flagship goes down in one hit, then the UNSC flagship(sister to the Infinity) takes a crippling blow, but forerunner shielding saves it from complete destruction. Then three Covenant cruisers explode from the same direction as the first two shots. Only then are a bunch of slipspace ruptures detected and dozens of ships of completely alien design... Not alien as in Covenant, as in completely foreign to this region of space. Then in all languages on all frequencies at once we hear a message: "People of the milky way, cease your fighting immediately..." "We have come to destroy the great ringbearer" "The ultimate tool of destruction must not be used ever again. Should any of you attempt to stop us or interfere, you will be deemed hostile and dealt with on the spot. End transmission." Suddenly everything goes silent. The Banished immediately know what's up and start a hasty evacuation of whatever troops they have on the ground close enough to be picked up. The UNSC follow suite, but sensing a diplomatic outcome they send envoys and hails to the unknown ships. The envoys are sent back at antimatter-point, and the hails are ignored. The Covenant charge their shields and weapons preparing for a final glorious stand, but before their ion cannons can even charge they're quite literally blown in half by a hail of railgun fire so intense it would require the entire UNSC navy to replicate just a fraction of it's devastation. Seeing the situation is completely fucked up beyond all recover the UNSC orders a full retreat, not wanting to lose what's left of their navy so soon after the war. ONI stays behind with a small escort fleet and oversees the evacuation of relics and survivors on the surface, hoping maybe the Spartans and scientists might have a better chance at stalling the unknown threat than the Home Fleet. And then this is where we start off Halo 7, flying to the surface with a bunch of surviving Spartans and ODSTs, linking up with remaining units from the Spirit of Fire, and organizing resistance against desperate Covenant and Banished, now seeking the last escape off the platform(an airfield controlled by the UNSC) And much like the Flood's appearance, suddenly midway through the game these new enemies appear, slaughtering all covenant on sight, chasing the Banished into the open, forcing a few desperate Brutes and Elites to beg for mercy and simultaneously warn the UNSC of what's coming. The enemies we face use stealth technology, but unlike the Covenant who rarely use it for infiltration, these guys use it standard issue... In fact even once they are killed it's really hard to identify anything about them besides vaguely humanoid features. Everything about them from their stealth suits, to their ominous warnings, to their communication(or, apparent lack thereof) screams "these guys do not want us to know who they are" ... Which of course naturally only makes you want to know what they are even more. As you play through the game you unravel more of the mystery of this species, perhaps they are related to the mystery of Heian and it's ancient civilization. I don't think the whole game should take place on the Ark, after all we've had a shit ton of Halo games on ... Halo installations. I actually think a considerable amount of time should be spent on an actual planet, a planet related to both the unknown species and the Forerunners, perhaps a colony world built on the ruins of an ancient Forerunner world, here's a cool concept - Ecumenopolis, turned jungle world, turned semi-civilized/heavily wooded planet. Environmental storytelling could go so far in this setting - you have the original ruins, a hundred thousand years old, or more. On those ruins you have an overgrown jungle, I'm not just talking The Last Of Us here, I mean the planet has fully re-grown, the original city exists only as a rough outline in the strange topography of an otherwise jungle-like planet. Buried under fifty feet of dirt or more. And then in certain parts of the jungle we come across different ruins, ruins on top of the soil, some evidently human, some completely alien to any member of our expedition, of any species. And of course to top it all off we have modern day research outposts, military camps, and possibly even small civilian settlements, hidden in secluded pockets of valleys and mountain ranges(old husks of buildings, unknown to the natives)

Sure, but at the same time it was a mercy kill compared to being found by the flood.

@@xcfjdyrkdtulkgfilhu I wonder if since the flood can house and store all the knowledge and memories of their victims they assimilated if it also holds stored somewhere its original DNA structure? Like if somehow someway a species can breakdown the flood cells to open up that can of worms???🤔🤔🤔

So there could potentially be intelligent sentiant life that survived the firing of the halo array that spent over 100,000 years become more technologically advanced

Firing the array and losing to the Flood have the same end result. Why give up and use the halos when the source of the Flood has not been discovered and destroyed?

I’m not really on board with them wasting development time and resources on 4 player split screen when probably 5% or less of the player base will ever use it. Just isn’t practical in 2024 and I don’t think that’s the reason halo has declined.

Dread is the complete loss of Hope! At that point you give into your fate and death is your only fate. I Remember in the Bible, when Abraham was speaking to the Angel of The Lord, asking it, if 10 good people, 5 good people even 1 good person was found in Sodom and Gomorrah, if it would spare the cities, for the sake of that one soul!I The Angel said yes, but end the end no good soul was found, beyond Lott his nephew! We all know the fate of those evil people in the cities! Imagine the pain you would feel, knowing the endless trillions upon trillions of lives you have to delete, to give the few that you saved,, a chance at life! I would be heartbroken, to press that button, knowing that you failed them!

What is with you and tragic stories no one else thinks about? Think about the flash clones, what it would be like to be one of them? No understanding who you are, why you know these people you call parents, why is your organs failing? Is this fear? Think about the alien race that just pinged the galaxy and got vibe checked immediately after... oh and you just happened to survive it...

new lore is dumb lore. no they didnt suddenly detect new life forms retconned into halo 4. nobody can change halo 4 lore. if they were immediately destroyed by the rings firing then they didnt matter at all. rectonning new lore into old games is dumb as fuck not clever
