There's a guy from MIT that did this long before AI started being used. His little robots were programmed to "learn". They would see a problem, record it, solve the problem, record it, and correct the problem. He had several different robots in different stages. You may be surprised how many malls would LOVE to give you permission! They would just need time to “warn the public” (tape signs to entrance doors) that filming will take place at a specified date. Attach a charity to it and you would likely make the news. Charity: Get “My Name Is” stickers. Use auction or sponsors to decide names for the event. The minion who stands the longest wins a banana. All proceeds go to . People will complain less if creativity is for a good cause and makes children happy. Maybe even make one mildly magnetic and offer “Bling a minion with magnets” to kids while you set up. It may also help to have a “front man/woman” organizer NOT on theme (like how Disney characters have handlers at their theme parks) to answer Adult questions and portray “controlled” chaos.

Yeah, I mean I've worked for a few different complexes and most of them would love to. However yeah, you can't have small wheeled objects just rolling around loose it's a OHS violation and can get them in trouble so they have to put a stop to it. To avoid the followers from crashing into each other, the set distance could be made to be different for each of them. Infrared LEDs on Bob and cameras on the others would probably be the easiest way to do it. Radio direction finding like airtags might also be worth trying but would be less accurate. But less accurate might be more fun as they have more of a random walk around them. Also, email the marketing people at the mall, tell them you can do a minion show, it will normally cost them $2000 but you want to film it for your KZbin so you are willing to do a special deal and not charge.

A little late to the party but wouldn't it have made sense to give them all nfc chips that communicated their location to each other? That way they can all gather in formation rather then running into each other? Also adding weights to the hands with a gyroscopic sensor (idk what it's call) so it can use the weights to balance itself instead of falling over? I'd suggest looking into flocking behavior (boids) which simulates group behavior of birds/fish. Really good algorithms exist which would make moving in unison more natural and can even add collision avoidance and variable velocity of each minion from each other. This is often used in game development for mobs of units since it's less costly then pathfinding and doesn't require a mesh or knowledge of the world around them (except for relative objects around current location...like a wall). Craig Reynolds has a great article on this you can read up on. I think this should be doable, but I have only done it in game dev and not real-world scenario where velocity will be impacted by the elements and other limitations that exist.
