Aiyo simple answer la. All these delivery companies wants to cut cost. Unlicensed people will accept the lower than market price and won't ask questions nor give the delivery company much trouble because they know what they are doing is illegal. Consumers also don't want to pay for higher delivery fees so the delivery companies kind of have no choice or they will go bankrupt. All willing accomplices. Edit: There will be no manpower shortage. There is a pay expectation mismatch.

This is quite a complex problem, big companies like J&T and Ninjavan are losing millions a month trying to outcompete one another to monopolise, they are just burning investor money to gain market share, nothing wrong as it is a free market. However, the unfortunate side effect is the sub contractors who are squeezed by the big guys (who are trying to cut losses) and the only way for the smaller guys to survive is to hire these illegal workers as they do the same job for cheaper. One way to stop this is to raise delivery prices across all platforms. But how many of us are ready to pay more? Another way is to allow work permits for the logistics industry. But what’s to stop yet another unicorn to come and spoil the market all over again?

The problem is.. big delivery companies getting contracts with logistics company for a lower cost for each parcel/delivery items, which affects other courier service companies and drivers. Big companies hire illegal workers so to enable themselves to earn and dominate, and forcing delivery drivers to complete an unrealistic amount of drops in a short given timing. Other delivery drivers due to the competitive rates, are also force to work longer hours or rush and drive dangerously just to be on time. Because of the demand, you will also see all the vans having their vehicle spaces fill all the way up, cannot even see the rear window. It is a tough job and continue to be dangerous if no authorities stepping up to take action to solve these issues.

We filed a report to take him to court but he failed to turn up and there was no further investigation. Why is there no regulation for these movers? He used a Chinese name, Ang Tiam Hock on his LLM account but was a foreign worker from India. He said Ang was his boss and sent him and we thought this was a normal practice on LLM. MOM guy is your typical read from script scholar with no idea of reality. I buy from Shopee quite often & so far only once the seller had option to collect from a Buzz store. Which BTW was an epic failure as Buzz supposedly turned away the courier & Shopee had to arrange a doorstep delivery on another date. 🙄 And it was a small item not something space consuming. None of the other sellers had the option of Buzz or to collect from locker. TBH i prefer locker as when they leave at doorstep, 90% of the time they don’t ring the bell. And if its an expensive item I worry it gets stolen. So why doesn’t MOM scholar ask all these sellers why all of them or 90% of them don’t provide the option to collect from locker? 🙄 Easy to talk about embracing technology & work place redesign but do your homework first & ask sellers why most of them don’t offer locker option.

We were talking a break when a rider came into the car park on his Moped with a delivery box on the back. He wanted to know about how to go about taking the IBT. Turns out he didn't have a learner permit nor had he ever taken the IBT, meaning it was illegal for him to be on the road as you need a learner permit and an IBT certificate of completion. After he got his info he went right back to his delivery work. As he rode out of the car park and onto the main road he was all over the place. I turned to my instructor and said, "he's literally doing everything you told us not to do on a bike" Only thing he did right was wearing a Helmet. From then on I am very wary of such riders in case they don't know the rules of the road.

Big Companies compete with each other by lowering the price and customer are not willing or don't want to pay more for delivery..Base on what he say 150 parcel cleared within 4 to 5hrs, any experienced delivery driver knows which company he work for and how much is being paid per parcel. The lowest i heard before a driver earned per parcel is ard 70cent to $1.20 for 1 of the biggest e-commerce company in Singapore. Easy to say the higher the volume you deliver in a small area the lower the price per parcel. On top of that the company will impose penalty and the penalties is between $50 and can up to above $200-$300 depending on what the customer complain. Some customer purposely report missing item just to get the item for free

Our manpower challenges are longstanding and complex. MOM is aware that many roles traditionally filled by foreigners are unappealing to locals. In fact, ask agency officials if they'd want their own children to take on these jobs - the answer is likely no. Reducing foreign worker quotas may seem like a solution to create jobs for locals, but it only compounds the problem. While businesses are open to transformation, automation isn't feasible for every job. If SMEs has these budgets to resolved manpower issues, they would probably retired or invest the money elsewhere. The reality is that manpower shortages in logistics, F&B, and service sectors will persist. If left unaddressed, this will trigger a domino effect, ultimately leading to substantial increases in labor costs across all sectors.

I think to tackle the entire issue of manpower, the contractors will have to be bold enough to negotiate a fairer rate with the big logistics companies who often are the ones that call the shot. Back in 2014, E-commerce platforms and big logistics companies' parcel rate to contractors on the norm were about $3-4 per parcel, or worse, per address for some. So when it reached the subcontractors, it's usually offered at $1.5-3, a driver handles about 70 locations in a single 12hrs run. Sure there were some as high as $15 for bulky or heavy item, but there weren't much of these to form a non negligible ratio to the overall earning. That was a decade ago. With inflation taken into consideration, if today's subcontractors are still earning the same rate or even less, don't you think something is very wrong up the line? In employment, everyone wants a salary raise annually. Your bus fares get adjusted upwards annually. Even your CPF minimum sum goes upwards annually. So these drivers still earn the same $200 per day in 2025 or in the video's case, $150 which seems to be worse off than a decade ago? It doesn't make sense. This, in my opinion, is exploitation. I hope contractors would really sit down and calculate what is the minimum sum required for living to self reflect on their subcontractors' conditions before accepting a lowballing deal. When you are able to put yourself in their shoes, I believe you'll be able to understand why many of them ran away. Not to mention, most of the subcontractors are mostly bearing their own van cost as per age-old practice. How much do you think the subcontractors are left with after deducting vehicle related expenses? Not forgetting that even rental and gas go up. Inflation affects everything across board, doesn't make sense for earnings in any profession to stay stagnant for more than a decade. Somewhere along the line, we have courier platforms. From my observations, their rates also nearly stayed the same if not cheaper for bigger heavier stuff. Most of them did minor raise to the more common smaller items. But these are different services altogether. While the former consolidates pick ups to a singular point at a certain warehouse, the latter functions more similarly to a taxi, point A to point B most of the time. If businesses and contractors chose to ignore inflation and retain the same average payout or even lesser to the ones running the grounds over a long period of time, is it such rocket science to decipher why no one wants to be in those exploited positions? Every profession is respectable, but can those people at the bottom truly feed their families or even themselves if their earnings remained stagnant throughout the years? I'd say if you want to see changes, improve recruitment rate amd job sustainability... then please walk the talk.

Such a simplistic view that unlicensed drivers equate to dangerous driving and coming from a deputy officer in charge… clearly doesn’t live or drive in the real Singapore.
@Alternative-ni5cg13 сағат бұрын
There are also foreigners delivering for grab, food panda etc with Singaporean or PR actually registered as the delivery person

Licensed drivers are equally as bad as unlicensed drivers. I want old people out of the road. Too old can’t see properly. GTFO? Then maybe ask again if I’m more comfortable to see my loved ones sharing the road again. Policy makers are human, they are not perfect.

manpower ministry want automation to solve last mile delivery? is he insanely out of touch and just dropping new buzzwords?

I would consider the pickup lockers automation, so that is the best solution for now.

You worry because sharing the roads with people driving without licence? I'm worried abt driving alongside others that already pass license. They give too much chance just giving away license to anyone who isn't fully ready especially mentally so that in itself i feel is EQUALLY as dangerous. SG drivers are a different breed of high ego with attitude problem very scary and dangerous having A LOT of those people driving around on a daily basis

MOM should send their employees to go work for a logistics company to set better policy.. Automation is not a complete solution for the manpower crunch when most of the locals are rejected these non-exec roles.
@NotfullyevolvedКүн бұрын
Please.they should be catching unsafe drivers. Why is their assumption of not having a valid license = unsafe. Just look at SG road vigilante -_-

Gov is trying to reserve low paying jobs for Singaporeans while reserving high paying managerial roles for foreigners. That's the reason why we have little quota to fulfill manpower shortages in certain industries.
