Heating your home during a power outage or to boost an existing system is simple. Just follow this simple step by step method of making a DIY heater that will heat an entire room in minutes. These micro heaters can be stored for years until one is needed during an emergency. In larger rooms four of them running simultaneously can heat even large rooms. No special skills are needed to assemble and maintain. An Important note is to only use them if you have proper safety equipment and monitoring systems in place. The cost of running them is extremely low and the build cost is only dollars per heater.

as a seasoned mechanic I can add to your project by suggesting you buy a step bit instead of that paddle bit. it would make a cleaner hole and you can use high temperature RTV instead of JB Weld because it remains flexible and heat proof. Great project especially for a greenhouse.

I would add, a "Paddle Bit" is also known as a Wood Bit, and is intended for such, though it can be used on thick plastics which are of similar hardness. They should not be used for metal.

For anyone asking how to extinguish the flame. Use a glass, ceramic, or metal cup that is deep enough to encapsulate the wick and pipe and a diameter that would be less than the lid. Set it upside-down on the lid. The flame will go out in seconds. To keep it from evaporating or being flammable when you don't want it to be, you'll need some sort of lid that will seal around the jar lid.

After suffering through a Winter with no heat, electricity, or water, I now have PTSD about it happening again. The fear is overwhelming at times. Even though I'm fine now, I still have nightmares about that time in my life. After watching this video and a few others of yours, my anxiety and fear have diminished a great deal. I actually cried after watching this. I literally lost my job after being ill for a year, went through my savings to keep from going into foreclosure, and endured so many more nightmarish situations. One of the coldest winters in Detroit history and I had no utilities to keep me warm. I burned EVERY book in my extensive library, furniture, clothes, scavenged wood scraps around my neighborhood, you name it. This would've saved me a lot of cold and terrifying nights. I saw the video with the heater and the fan. I've now got everything I need if anything happens again. I ordered the fan right away. I went to Home Depot and bought EVERYTHING on your list. I tested out your invention and boy oh boy, it got hot in my house in about an hour. I couldn't believe it. PLEASE continue to do what you do!

For sure Mariah Lynn! I'm a life long schooled mechanic with over 30 years experience and no way in hell would I waste the probably $30++ bucks for a good metal bit when a couple of bucks for a spade bit, if you don't have the "proper" drill bit!! It's a simple,"fuk that" in my opinion.
@BruceOfWaynes
@BruceOfWaynes Ай бұрын
That kind of "improvisation" often costs one a finger, or worse. Please don't replicate what you saw here. That man is incredibly lucky he hasn't popped one of those bottles in his hand drilling those lids that way.. For multiple reasons. Most of all, though, that spade bits break through sheet metal in a very unpredictable manner. It's literally uncontrollable, as you saw here. A proper bit, or at least proper technique would've prevented the way he burst through the material. Removing the glass from The equation is just common sense.. And not having it in your hand while a spinning piece of steel is about to suddenly occupy its space sure should be common sense.
@Unicorn161

If it's an emergency sure, but why damage a wood bit when it would be cheaper to buy a cheap metal bit? Also, that wood bit can easily snag the metal and cause damage to your hands. Is it really worth the stitches? And potential nerve and tendon damage?

Our geo-therm system died 4 years ago and they said it would cost minimum 100's and maximum 1000's to fix it. I bought terracotta plant pots and put one upside down on our gas stove with the burner turned to low, and it heats an 830 square foot set of rooms. It keeps the rooms at 70 - 72 degrees F, even when it is several degrees below freezing outside. We have a summer kitchen downstairs and do the same. When it gets to freezing well below zero outside, 8 or 10 degrees below freezing, we use our wood stove.

Copper Oxide is a big problem above 350 degrees F. You can avoid this in a couple of ways. 1. Use Brass pipes - but the heat conductivity is up to 75% lower. 2 Use High Heat paint (like Rustoleum) to cover the copper pipes. Lowers heat conductivity only about 5% 3. Use Cerakote High-Temp Ceramic Coatings. Minimal heat loss at twice the temperature Remember to let the coatings cure completely according to manufacturers instructions to eliminate VOCs. One thing a lot of people with fireplaces don’t always know is if it’s quite cold outside that cold air in the chimney can push smoke/exhaust into a room. Best way to get hot air pushing through that 10 to 20 feet of cold air in a chimney is put a flame into the chimney priming airflow up instead of out into the room. That’s sometimes why when lighting a fireplace the smoke will bellow out instead of going up the chimney when lighting a fire in a cold fireplace.

What an excellent inspiration and great idea made & explained so clearly that even a blind man can make this happen (so to say bravo to you). By the way, I am going to make this but not using any fuel, rather I will use WATER as fuel. Instead of carbon felt & copper pipe, I will use stainless steel solid rods to make 2 electrodes and use a 6V lead acid / solid state battery to supply a very small current of about 0.5 amps or even less via a simple potentiometer. The gas which will come out via a tube will have to go through a bubbler (2nd. Jar filled with water) then out of that second jar tube (metal or copper) you can light up straight that gas will burn for 25 to 30 days on a single jar of water. Add salt NaOh about 1 x teaspoon to that water. Bingo 👍

It's just a DIY oil lamp. Made one of these as a kid. You can take a ceramic flower pot and bury the jar in sand. It will create an insulator around the jar and decrease the chance of it being knocked over. The challenge for one of these with a large exhaust tube is just putting it out, as you need a container deep enough to sit over the entire wicking structure and narrow enough to sit on the lid. Dousing the flame is all about removing oxygen.

By your definition of unlimited heat (really using fuel) a big buddy heater that uses propane is the same thing only WAY safer.

True, except the big buddy heater needs quite a bit of oxygen and leaves a layer of moisture throughout the room, the bedding, everywhere. The windows will drop and freeze and the propane is still noxious to breathe, even when the open windows are defeating the heat. They really are one of the worst of all possible solutions, indoors. Except they can be bought off the shelf and light easily. That’s my take, as I was using one to heat my RV. When I moved back into the house, even with the wood stove; the diesel construction “torpedo” heater was easier to breathe around and produced many times the heat from the big buddy heater. That become my go to when the wood was low, or I had been out for a while..

Remember the old smudge pots that were used in Orange Groves in Florida, and along the roadside to mark construction??? Those "cannonball candles" would run for days on sludge fuel oil.... like my used motor oil... hint... and they even had a little metal cap on a chain to put them out!!! 😮😂❤😮😅 Old school, but time tested for my greenhouse!!!

thanks for the video, i made one today, here's some ideas on the felt, mine was pretty thick so after i cut it to size i pulled it apart down the middle to make it thinner, it comes apart easily, also instead of fighting to get the felt between the tubes, wrap it around the smaller tube but let the felt go 1/2 to 1 inch below the bottom of the tube, then fold the felt into the bottom of the tube and find something to push in the tube to hold the felt inside, i used a bit driver. Insert the 1/2 inch tube into the 3/4 inch tube until it comes out of the bottom of the larger tube, then pull out whatever you have holding the felt in place and the felt, then pull the felt sticking out the bottom back up between the tubes from the top. If you try to buy the felt at home depot, look in the plumbing section, if you can't find it there then look in the tools section where they sell torches and soldering supplies, its in a white plastic bag called flame protector by Oatey.

fire out by depriving it from OXYGEN so you create another metallic pipe larger diameter and cover the one burning so no oxygen no fire. NO NEED of gloves you weld or screw an extension pipe HANDLE and or make a spring like around the larger turn off pipe so you can easily handle it with direct hand kind of pipe over pipe but in this case ... spring over pipe, best option is either weld or screw a handle over the larger off pipe so you can turn off on the distance, safely.

It isn’t going to make a cold room toasty. It will just take the chill off. Anything bigger and you will use a lot of fuel. Electric heaters are near enough 100% efficient and you would spend just as much getting your room to the same temperature using this method. As he said it is for an emergency, not for saving money.
