Idk what gas the Germans used against the Russians, but it must have taken some time before the Russian troops got the gas fully in their system, giving them just enough strength to not only keep pushing forward and fight until the gas made them draw their final breath, but also highly likely scare the living daylight out of the German troops and put the rest of the line of Russian forces at the psychological advantage.
