I've seen Unlucky Morpheus live a number of times and they are impressive. The title of UM/Quadratum's cover album these songs are from, "Loud Playing Workshop", is taken from "Live Playing Workshop", a renowned workshop held at the Musicians Institute in Tokyo. Mikio Fujioka, late of Babymetal's Kami Band, led the workshop, and members of UM took part in it. Basically, UM have recreated the MI workshop on the album and the live performance, as they used to play the same covers at that workshop.

I always enjoy them. The crowd was quiet because this was played in June 2021, yes, at a time when the pandemic was not yet over, and they were severely restricted from wearing masks and cheering. It was a very difficult time for a rock band. Once the ban on cheers, etc. was lifted, many Japanese bands enjoyed the concert, almost crying that they were back. That was the background.

Correct, the no voice pandemic restrictions were in place and the crowd was not allowed to make any noise. Those rules sapped the strength of audiences for several years. It wasn't UM or any other band at the time responsible for this. The rules were the rules and they had to deal with them.

I can understand your score. I saw their live performance in Tokyo two years ago. They played half of the show as QUADRATUM and the second half with Fuki as Unlucky Morpheus. The QUADRATUM performance had an atmosphere similar to a classical concert where you could simply enjoy the performance, and I really enjoyed it!

This video made me realise how much energy and crowd interaction the 2 singers bring to UM.

Jill studied violin from the age of 3, and her teacher did not like sheet music and forced her to play by ear. As a result, she has absolute pitch, probably even melodic pitch, and as she says, I can even play the sound of rain if I hear it. She even played it blindfolded

Hi David! I enjoyed your review. Even if yeah, the score was low. That's ok though because I've watched enough to know your criteria so, it's totally consistent with how you view things. I understand the conflict though. Change of subject. You edit in a lot of different scenes from movies and cartoons here and there in your videos. I think that it would be hilarious to run the scene from the movie "Platoon" where Charlie Sheen says "dance M**********!" for when an artist doesn't around enough onstage. That might be too edgy for this channel, but I would totally bust out a laugh if you did. One last thing. I discovered Unlucky Morpheus on this channel, and I wanted to thank you for that. I know that the songs that you review are requests from Patrion, you could still choose not to do them. I appreciate that it's here. Discovering bands like Unlucky Morpheus are the reason that I watch reviewers such as yourself in the first place. You are the only one I subscribe to though. 👍 Cheers David!

Jill released a song on her KZbin channel with another Japanese violinist Saori Yoshino. They collaborated under the name TONERICO with the instrumental song called “jinXnij”. Thanks for the reaction David. We all know you enjoyed the song, so we don’t really care about the score. Thanks HomeGnome 👍🏻

Thanks, I somehow missed that video from a couple of days ago. it seems like they are going to release an album for that project at the end of next month. I pre-ordered it before even hearing the song even though Mao seems to be involved with some of it and I am typically not the biggest fan of his writing, but I am willing to give it a shot since I love Jill's violin playing. Edit: hearing the track they released, it's pretty electronic sounding, which I didn't expect. Electronica works well with bowing instruments though, I used to listen a lot to Rena Jones back in the day who is a cello/violin player who also produced electronic music combined with her cello/violin.

No issues from me David - this is one occasion where I think the score is irrelevant. When I first requested it I think I didn't know you had the MV earlier in the queue, but even after seeing it thought it was still worth it to check out the live version (firstly to see Eruption, and secondly to prove that they and especially Jill can pull this off so well live). Not that I think it would change the score, but I think you were so into the start of the song you missed Jill getting the crowd clapping! Again, not to change the score, but perhaps for the logic of your scoring system in the future you could consider how hard the song is when taking into account how well its done live? Usually if you were watching a lacklustre live performance of an 8 min video you'd be bored and annoyed so that fits with a lower score for a live performance, but you certainly enjoyed watching this. At the end of the day you had fun with it, and I'd say were to some extent amazed with Eruption on the violin, so that makes it a fun reaction. Hope you didn't get too stressed with the score side of things.

I think given the time period this was recorded, the score is understandable. The Japanese crowds were dead because of the Covid restrictions that were in place for live events that barely got lifted just last year. All the crowds could do was clap. No chants, no cheers, no vocal interactions whatsoever, & it just sucked the life out of any live event, whether it was concerts or wrestling shows. Before Covid, Japanese crowds were awesome. They're just starting to get back to that form. Can't really fault Unlucky Morpheus because of the restrictions placed on them by Japan to limit the spread of that virus. They did the best with the hand that was dealt to them with a live show, which remember they operate independently & set their concerts up out of their own pockets.

Come to think of this. A violin is an instrument hits only four strings with only one bow....

To be fair, it's a higher score than I thought you'd give it, and I have seen this video a lot of times. The video is from Fuki's birthday show in 2021. It was an Unlucky Morpheus show, and these songs were done during the break Fuki takes. They have done other instrumental track, with the 4 of them, under the Unlucky Morpheus name, but they were original songs, like Spartan Army kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJuWnWl-arapoKs Also in 2021 the Japanese government, had allowed concerts to start taking place, but there were a lot of restrictions on what was allowed to happen, like the crowd were not allowed to make any noise apart from clap, and all had to wear masks. But as I said high than I thought it was going to be.

Hey David, don't beat yourself over that score man, it's your show your rules and if people don't get it well that's on them. (Visually speaking I'd give it 5 stars personally because anytime Jill and/or Fuki are on the screen it's as visually pleasing as it gets since they're both absolutely gorgeous 😄). But in all seriousness, I really doubt you'll get any harsh push back over this, UM fans in my experience are some of the most chill people you can find in the Japanese rock/metal world. The live show wasn't very exciting for the motives that people have already commented below. I also made this request way back before knowing there was a music video version of it already in the queue, if it was just my request alone you could replace it for something else, you already know from experience I never request the same song twice but since homegnome was also a requester that couldn't be done since he wanted to show you this live version, plus this version also had Eruption so there was something new to react to as well.

Sorry Krauser - if you wanted to replace it I would have been fine with that. I'm not sure if there are any other vids in the same boat but David please feel free to amend if its Krauser's original request and I'm also on there. Thanks.

3 stars?? Why you @$&!!!😂😂😂 Just messing with you. I've seen the video many times. As others have explained about the cheering ban, and considering that Fuki usually is the one to rile up the crowd, when you explained how you were going to rate it before you even played it, I knew it was going to take a hit. After hearing your criteria, I honestly expected worse, like 2 tops. As you said, they performed the songs great, but the visuals aren't that good, let's be honest. I also said to myself that if any one of them pulls them ahead a bit, it would be Fumiya. But I do disagree with you on Ogawa (bass). He was NOT just standing there!!! He was bobbing his head too!!😂😂 You beat yourself up way too much on this one. You made it perfectly clear that the rating was based on the visuals and didn't reflect the talent. Seems most of us agree with you. Good on you for sticking to the rules of your channel. 👍

Every grade we get is always connected to the classification rules. I dont have any problem with your scoring system and basic principles for the scores you give. While I am ok with your current rules I have a proposal. Please consider include more "points" into your reviews. For instance - "originality" of the sound. Yes, you are familiar with the Song. Yes, you score the live performance. But the "visual impression" people get when they get on the shw goes together with the "sound impression". Dream theater doesn`t have violin. Unlucky Morpheus doesn`t have keyboards. People go to UM show bot only for the Visuals. Their live performance give listeners a new impression. They get Dream Theater with a Violin. I think this should be included in the list of Impressions the Audience buy tickets for. Not only for the Visuals. But for the uniqueness of Sound they will get. I don`t know if UM have a record of their DreamTheater cover. So it may be that the only place people can get such experiance is go visit UM live show. Please think it over. It is also a factor. Not only the Presence, Energy, Interaction, Production. Uniqueness of live Sound should also be considered, I think. Just my 2 cents. Cheers!

3 stars! - It's hard to score this song on live performance only without taking into consideration the music. This is such a technical song it's hard to be jumping around the stage trying to get the audience involved. (I've never seen Dream Theater do a lot of showmanship with this song either). With your vast experience on songs like this, I'm sure you knew ahead of time that it would be impossible to score fairly. I think it was unfair and doomed to fail from the beginning. I personally would have given it a pass and given no score, with an explanation. I'm sure your viewers would've understood. Cheers!

I would never give DT anything higher than a 6 for their live show. Honestly I would give them a lower score than Unlucky Morpheus, DT are beyond boring to watch live.
