Encore was his first album to catch hate from most people. Including his fans. He did relapse 4 years later after a long drug bender, and it caught even more hate because people thought horror core was corny, and they made fun of him doing accents. Then he did recovery the next year which got hate because it was a 180° from relapse and had super soft songs like Not Afraid. People decided they were done with Em after the Eminem Show honestly, and it's a shame. I guess they just wanted the MMLP over and over forever

Plus, the “all systems go” line is what happens when an addict tries just a little and then it just takes off and you’re not in control anymore. So he tried to take just a little, but now it’s all systems go and he’s off and running again, is one of the ways I take it because that’s how it went for me over and over and over again. Relapse is part of recovery some people say, and that was definitely my experience.

I don't know why Relapse got so much hate, Relapse to me is PEAK Eminem. It such a dope album, love the accents, makes me laugh my ass off, but also hits emotionally hard because you can really feel the fact that we almost lost him to drugs. Don't get me wrong, all the albums after Relapse have been OUTSTANDING studies in technical skills and just the pure art of rap, but they just aren't as fun as his older albums, even his disses are too tame. Relapse was just fucking dope as hell. Favorite track has to be My Mom, greatest song of all time, LoL.

In 2009 when this album dropped rap was transitioning to full Kanye, Wayne, Drake, Frank Ocean mode... So here comes Eminem after a 4 year hiatus with a Horror Core album with a shit ton of accents and it just wasn't received well by the masses. Which is why on recovery he reclaimed his spot on top of the throne with an album universally critically acclaimed by the masses with songs like Not Afraid and Love the way you lie. Like he said on Not Afraid "perhaps I ran them accents into the ground, relax I ain't going back to that now"
