In the second episode of this season we also saw a Leonidas-class battleship that was stripped of all its armament and was used as a supply ship. That as well as the introduction of this new battleship shows that the UN navy is finally starting to modernise their fleet.

That’s the general assumption that most are making, and it would make sense with them having unusually large storage bays already and with the removal of the weapons they would have more, plus we see some Leos refitted with new Railguns and drives so it is assumed that with the introduction of the new Nathan Hale-Class and the post war (UN/MCR war) Demilitarization that they would retire the Nathan Hales first as although newer than the Truman-Class they are worse off in armament and efficiency than them, so that some of the ones that were not refitted they could have been converted into resupply ships instead of being scrapped altogether.

Seeing how a few Leonidas-class appear in season 6, I feel like it's more of a stopgap solution than a "design-by-committee" that people initially called the ship. If you look closer at the model, the ship have the appearance of being modular. The drive section and the railguns are much less integrated into the ship than what we saw in Truman-class, which can be implies that those component were designed to be replaceable later in their life when the technology that were in development at that time became available.

That might be intentional: The _Roci_ was designed before they existed, and they were simply retrofitted onto the spaceframe as part of an upgrade package. So they seem a little awkward, wedged into the existing MCRN hull. It seems like the _Nathan Hale_ class was specifically designed to incorporate the plating, though. Perhaps it was even a direct response to Marco's dirty little "stealth rock" attack at the end of Season 5.

Touchscreens are worse in almost every regard but flexibility. When youre in a battle and fractions of seconds might decide if you live or die then having the controls at same place all the time instead of switching from menu to menu on a touchscreen is a huge advantage. The reason we see touchscreens everywhere these days isnt because theyre better but because its usually quite a bit cheaper to implement than physical buttons. The car manufacturer Mazda has removed the touchscreens from their current line up cause they argue people have too many crashes due to being distracted by them.
@Bloodhoven
@Bloodhoven 2 жыл бұрын
mazda did it rightfully so. touchscreens distract you way more than physical buttons, since physical buttons are way harder to miss and their location is way easier to memorize. BUT that only applies as long as no one invents some simulated haptic feedback for touchscreens/holograms. as soon as that happens, physical buttons will be far less important.

Considering this ship is brand-new within the show (as in we never saw it until this season), I would hedge a bet that she's the newest capital ship within the UNN and therefore would be the largest, so scaling her with the railguns (the 454-meter estimate) makes the most sense. Also, calling it the Nathan Hale class is just confusing, as we already know of UNN Nathan Hale from Season 2 (which is supposedly known as the Leonidas class), so I would like to think the Zenobia is actually a Xerxes class ship, which in the books were newer than every other UNN capital ship. Additionally, why would the Secretary General/Commander in Chief of the UNN choose anything less than the most powerful warship in her fleet as her flagship? If Zenobia isn't larger than the Truman class (which was also erroneously called a Nathan-Hale in S5E10), then it doesn't really make sense as the command-ship of the entire UNN.

PDCs and Torpedoes doors sizes are consistent with the smaller size option, Nathan Hale-class is the classes official name as it can be seen on the ship's name pledge/plate thing (same thing they have in Star Trek), also using the "biggest & newest, most heavily armed ship" as what is effectively a taxi is just tactically stupid and a waste of resources which is vitality needed elsewhere
@monarch3335
@monarch3335 2 жыл бұрын
@@Autofleet4429 I see your point with the "newest doesn't necessarily mean largest", but the only way I see this ship being a "Nathan Hale-class" ship is if they decommissioned the old UNN Nathan Hale (Leonidas class) and then built another ship of this new class (the Nathan Hale). It just doesn't seem to align with UNN practices however, as they seem to like keeping extremely old ships in service just to keep their numbers up. And in a time of war (against the Free Navy), it would make sense that they would keep older Leonidas class ships in service, as we've seen with the UNN supply vessel.

I think the CIC we've seen is a dedicated CIC for flag officers to command the fleet rather than a normal CIC/bridge for ship operation. Most ships nowadays that can afford the space have separate command room for both (or more, depend on the ship), so it make sense to separate them apart so they won't interfere with one another. We've seen moment where it's almost empty while the ship is still operating as well, so it certainly isn't dealing with ship's operation.

I feel like the UN just has a bunch of old ships and the MCRN knowing it’s more limited resources will make matching numbers hard, focused on quality. of course with Avasaralla in charge she probably put modernization of the fleet as the top budget considering what it had cost Earth to have terribly outdated junkers. Decommissioning the old fleet would probably be a net savings considering what a logistical and resoruce burden old warships tend to be. @@APMo2 Yes. My point is, she was forced to flip _because_ she can't mount her railgun on a turret. A capital ship can, which is why you shouldn't pointlessly obstruct their firing arcs. The Roci found a use for railguns outside of CQB. It was in "checkmate" as you put it and still won that engagement. For an example of a warship with good turret placement, I'd point to the Qwaar-Jet class Taiidan Heavy Cruiser from the _Homeworld_ series. Its weapons are mounted on sponsons, giving its eight turrets excellent firing arcs. The guns could even depress so far as to fire on enemies directly behind it. There's very few areas it couldn't put a mass-driver round or ion cannon beam through.

@@ReddwarfIV because they have the longest sensor array range of any ship class smaller than it. Being 500m long puts it slightly bigger than the donnager. If the battleship can avoid having its reactor location from facing the enemy then it will do so. That plus long range sensors gives the battleship ample time to perform an appropriate defensive/offensive manoeuvre. Every design and constructed human made vessel is limited by its strengths and weakness’ and has been improved upon earlier obsolete designs that had entered service before it further constricting how and where certain things are placed. It took myself a long time to understand why things are built the way they are.

I like the UNN ships more than the MCRN ones, because while I admire the latter's sleek design, the UNN ships represent practicality over pretty much everything else. Take the Leonidas class for example, it's pretty much a brick with some guns on it and it's outclassed by pretty much anything in the MCRN arsenal but there's something about the combination of its glaring weaknesses and physical design that makes me respect it as a ship. The UNN as a whole is pretty much like the Leonidas Class, spartan (heh), large, lumbering, outmoded but still capable of giving the MCRN a very bloody nose. The Zenobia is definitely a shift in the UNN's overall doctrine, and was probably helped along by the UNN's discovery of the Osiris, the Amun-Ra class ship, that was left pummeled at the Battle of the Spin Station and is perhaps the best ship in its navy outside of the relatively unknown Xerxes Class.

As far as the scaling goes, it makes no sense for any military to scale down the main guns on a battleship. It's far more like that they would scale up the PDCs. Also, there is absolutely no chance that any navy would make a "battleship" that is literally half the size of its nearest rival. The Donager is around 475m long, so you can safely bet that the 454m version is canon.
@dark_ops1651

@@dark_ops1651 but, again, it's comes back to the fact that you wouldn't call it a battleship if it is half the size of its nearest battleship rival. Militaries are always dick measuring. Sure, bigger isn't always better and smaller ships take less time to build. But, if youre building ships that arent much bigger than a Scirocco class, they simply wouldn't be battleships, and wouldn't be called battleships just for the sake of it. They'd be heavy cruisers, at best. The whole point of a battleship is to bring massive firepower to the battlefield, which is entirely why I said it wouldn't make sense to downsize their big guns. When it comes to kinetic slugs, more mass being accelerated means more kinetic energy and more destructive potential. You also have to remember that Battleships are as much symbols of the side that creates and uses them, as well as psychological warfare, as they are practical war machines. You build a battleship not only for the sheer power that they bring to combat, but as a statement of what your side is capable of creating. You don't build a *Battleship* if you're trying to prove that "bigger isn't better."

@@dark_ops1651 kind of a poor justification, ain't it? Not only is the Leo old, at this point, but is the result of a notoriously underfunded and ultimately failed attempt to modernize the UN Navy, decades ago. It's size can be attributed more to a lack of funding than to the designers seeking to prove that bigger isn't always better (fun fact: the UNN philosophy was, in fact, that bigger is better). Look at this from a simple common sense perspective. The entire point of the Nathan-Hale Class is to be a direct counterpart to the Donnager Class, with the UNN obviously pouring copious resources into its development. If the Donnager is 475m long, you can safely bet that the UNN's newest and most powerful battleships will be similarly sized (454m, in this case). Quick Side Note: there seems to be some overlapping information between the Xerxes Class Command Battleship and the Nathan-Hale Class Battleship. The information that I have read on both seems to indicate that they are more or less one in the same. The Xerxes Class is almost exactly 500m long, making it larger than the Donnager. Even if these two designations aren't the same ship, you can safely assume that the larger size of the Xerxes Class is indicative of the design philosophy of modern UNN battleships.

I admit I only saw clips of the show, but I have some thoughts just seeing this design: Missile Cruiser/CNC ship. The armor is extra thick around the front sides. With seirous PDC. Like they primarily expect to defend against missile strikes comming in at a frontal angle. The missiles are in the front, so it can show minimal profile while firing. The railguns can not fire aft and only combine fire frontal or along the vertical axis. So I say they are intended to fire frontal. It is used by the president. Who has much more use for CnC and communications gear, then for a weapons platform. Of course, this ship might have been modified extensively for the "President Plane" role. Reducing weaponry, to allow more quarters, faster speed and better communications equipment.

It's officially the Nathan Hale-class as it says so on the ship's name plate thing (or what ever you call them like the ones they have in Star Trek) and its not a big issue as we haven't seen the og Nathan Hale since the beginning of season 3 and that was before the war she could of easily been destroyed so as long as we don't see it again (which I highly doubt we will) it isn't a big deal, the size used in this video is likely to be close to current based on calculations using the ship's PDCs (which are consistent in size on all UNN vessels) plus Xerxes-Class is the UNN's equivalent to the MCRN's Donnie and that goes against how the UN is portrayed in the show.

Great video but I have trouble believing the brand new state of the art UN battleship would be smaller then the previous class. I know size is hardly everything but the UN military command for the most part always struck me as being very vain. Yes sure the Martians had newer ships but we have more. Our crews are trained better. Our ships are bigger and better then the FN. etc etc. And you have to remember this class would have been ok'd by the same warhawks that started the UN/Martian war. I doubt anything that wasn't larger and better then the Donnager class would have been ok'd.

@@geohiekim8705 These ships have their drives in the *rear* which means to close distance on an enemy (which happens constantly in the series) the *front* of the ship will be pointed towards the enemy. When they offer a side at a normal (perpendicular) angle, they get lots of holes punched through them. And if you look at the Rossinante, she *is* armored and sloped on the front. But for some reason larger warships offer flat surfaces on front perpendicular to enemy fire. The reason you angle a surface is because projectiles have to go through a lot more armor - or even reflect off of it without penetration at the right angle. In the battle with the Pella and other ships, they were within a 10 degree arc. And the Rossi kept her smallest profile to them except for the quick spins.

The same way all ships in The Expanse work. They point towards the target and burn that way to accelerate, then half way through the journey they flip around and burn backwards to decelerate. That was the whole point of the 'Epstein' drive - it was so efficient you could carry enough feul to burn the ENTIRE journey, rather than just a short burn to kick off, run with the engines cold most of the journey, and a short burn at the end to decelerate - IE how current-day rockets work.

Is there any explanation why the command centers in large vessels ignore all security? There are no chairs, the personnel walks around in overalls, no helmets, no strapping in, just like they'll never ever change direction or cut thrust or risk de-pressurization? I know it's cinematic and looks "cool", but goes against the grain of the rest of the show. Shouldn't they all be strapped in seats with full pressure suits on?
@0122arendell
@0122arendell 2 жыл бұрын
No, the ship is pressurized, meaning it has habitable pressure and atmosphere, so.no helmet needed, and no hole short of the full destruction of the ship will make it depressurize faster than u can patch it in reality, as shown in the show, and personel strap in when changes r made in acceleration only, no need to be chair bound if the ship isn't actively accelerating
@SlavicSpring
@SlavicSpring 2 жыл бұрын
@@0122arendell I can understand that size of the ship creates a buffer for depressurization. Like in the scene where the main characters are in the "brig" and the Donnager is engaging the Stealth ships. But, wouldn't a hit on a ship even so large create a potential danger for crew just standing on a command deck? I mean, we wear helmets on bikes, why wouldn't a decorated commander of a huge spaceship protect her/him self in case of engine cut-offs? Hmmm, or maybe it just wouldn't matter considering inertia. They wouldn't suddenly stop in space. Anyways, thanks for the answer. I appreciate it. It makes me appreciate the show even more. (and suffer for the abrupt ending)

Love the show but god they need to do some editing to make sure the ships are what they are supposed to be. The UNN nathan hale is in season 2 and it is a leonidas class battleship. We know they always name the first ship in its class after the class. Also in season 5 the unn admiral at HQ tells Chrisjen the ring is guarded by two Nathan Hale class battleship when they are clearly Truman Class dreadnoughts. This is just lazy review as we now have 3 very different class of warships with 2 of them wrongly being labeled as Nathan Hale class.... Get your act together Expanse. Lastly the whole season we are taunted by the grandeur of the Zenobia as UNN1 and the flagship of the fleet and we never see it do anything from a battle standpoint. Sad.
