Shoma’s perspective is very different from ours. Unlike us, he is observing and learning from Stephane now and live so he likely does not feel the need to watch his past performances. It is more important for him to know what his current competitors are doing to keep up and ahead of them. Do other skaters “study” their coaches performances? I don’t know. He sure could have come up with some generic answer like “Stephane’s Olympic FS here at Palavela” but he preferred to be honest. BV 100 with max GEO for that answer😊

The panic in Shoma's eyes, I immediately want go and save him 🥺 As to him not watching Stephane's performances, in my opinion It could be intentional, maybe he doesn't want to imitate Stephane, even unintentionally or doesn't want to have a feeling that he competing with him somehow. Especially that Stephane is not only his coach but his choreographer also. Shoma didn't say that in the interview thought, but It's not something you necessarily want to share with the press. And Staphane seems absolutely ok with it, which is significant, because they obviously have a special bond.

At least he is honest. He does seem to forget that he and Stephane did Four Seasons together during FOI. Of course, I don’t think him not watching programs is intentional. I just don’t think he thinks about it. It does seem like he may watch programs of skaters in the same shows and competitions.

トリノオリンピックの時7歳、その後は１１歳では夜中、朝早くで見てないのかもね。　まだその時は日本の中でしか考えてないでしょう。　日本に高橋だいちゃんが好きで、国内に凄い人がいたから、　見本が高橋さんだから。　　私も日本人だけ応援していて、　バンクーバーオリンピックは高橋さんのライバルでした。　日本人しか見えていなかったな私は、　宇野ちゃんは子供だったから見て無くても仕方ない。　今のステフアンさんのアイスショーを見て頼んだのでしょう。　　心の支えのが大切だったと思う。　宇野ちゃんらしい。　嘘がない。　アイスショーでわかる。　ジャンプはもう先生をこえていて、　表現力と心がまえの教えと支えをしてもらえる。　今の日本の先生は記録を残してない人の方が良いスケーターを出している。　　先生の実力より、教え方が大切。　宇野ちゃんは今のステフアンさんを見ている。　宇野ちゃんらしい！　そこが応援したくなる。

年配の私で小学生の時からフィギュアファンなので、若い世代の人たちが知らないのは仕方ないでしょうが、ファンとしては寂しいと言いたかったのです。 宇野君の天然さも演技も好きですが、せめて自身のコーチの現役時代のビデオを観ていてほしかったです。宇野君のほうが４回転ジャンプは優れていても、例えばステファンのバンクーバーオリンピックのショートプログラムのステップは必見だと思います。

I actually find it embarrassing and slightly offensive that he never took an hour or two out of his life to watch Lambiel’s previous performances. Especially considering Lambiel is, to this day, one of the most art- and graceful male skaters ever to exist. And to be honest, what makes Shoma a great skater is Lambiel’s artistry. Otherwise he’d just be another Asian skater that can jump well. I’m annoyed.
