great video and tips on putting back the timing cover: but one thing I saw that needs more explanation is when you put the new timing chain back on, I saw that your TDC dots both facing each other which is cam at 6 o'clock and crank at 12 o'clock which is set at the exhaust stroke ....but when you set your distributor back in , its off 180 degrees.... So when your off the next step is to take of the distributor and go back and set your (TDC to Intake Power stroke) cam at 12 o'clock and same with crank at 12 o'clock and now your distributor will set in at piston one... most video don't explain if what happens when your off 180 degrees on your distributor...

Oil pan still attached, that’s great news , I’ll be taking out the cam on my 4.3 inboard, this is motivating not having to pull the block.

It should be similar depending on your timing chain cover. I know some of the new vortec motors have a different one so I'm not sure if the will work the same way so just a work of caution there. Good luck!

I've had the Chevrolet chrome timing covers and a few sets of chrome valve covers including two sets of Edelbrock chrome script valve covers they don't seal for shit!!! Only way I managed to get the new set of Edelbrock chrome script valve covers I had to seal was victor reinz cork valve cover gaskets sealed to the heads, and the valve covers.

Yeah I don't prefer the stamped steel chrome stuff either, but It kept me from spending any extra money on the project. Pretty excited it sealed up well

I made a tool to press the crank sprocket on. Threaded rod to match the bolt and on the further end two nuts. No more tapping

Oh nice! This one tapped on pretty easy but that sounds like a good idea also!

Harbor freight sells a 10 piece extractor set for that bolt head you snapped off. If you're really careful, you might be able to drill and spin it out without taking the cover off the engine.

Excellent job. Thanks for sharing. Let me ask you, did the truck started right before you did this replacement? I am wondering if that chain play messed up the timing somehow?

Yes, it started and had a very sporadic idle and would eventually stall. Timing chain totally fixed it

I think its prob worth checking out if a tune-up doesn't help much. My biggest issue was sporadic and inconstant idle

Is the timing chain a part of the engine or is it separate? For instance....If i buy a new motor is there a timing chain on it?
@Officrolly2 жыл бұрын
If you buy a complete motor it should be there but if you buy a block your gonna have to pick one up
@RacerXGarage2 жыл бұрын
Rolando hit it right on the head. It is something that is very necessary and should come on, and be installed on most motors.

what about that black link what is that for?
@RacerXGarage Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I follow, can you elaborate?
@HoldFast-un2fc Жыл бұрын
@@RacerXGarage Sure, There is one link in the timing chain that is black so I was wondering if it goes to a certain spot in the timing process or does it have to be turned toward the engine or away from the engine for a proper fit. I had installed a motor cycle chain once that had to be turned a certain way because other wise it would not ride on the gears correctly because of a slant in the way it was made. And same with a Nissan timing chain the black links had to be in line with the timing marks only there was 3 of them.
@prawny12009 Жыл бұрын
What pitch is the chain?
@RacerXGarage Жыл бұрын
Not sure I could tell you that, it is not something I am familiar with.

Better replace that timing chain assembly while you're at it. I see slack on it.
@RacerXGarage3 ай бұрын
So first, good eye! However, that is what this video covers; replacement of the timing chain. Maybe you didn't watch the whole thing, but yup, definitely needed replaced!
@marcushaynes8433 ай бұрын
@RacerXGarage I thought that you were replacing it with an OEM timing chain. That's what I mean. But I see that you have a double lapped timing chain assembly.

13:35 the gear moved a bit, is that going to cause issues? It's just a question, I'm trying to learn something
@RacerXGarage Жыл бұрын
Good Question! at 16:39 I talk about having to move it back because it moved when I was using the pully puller. Most factory small block chevys are not interference motors, so as long as I moved back to the left when I install it will be absolutely fine.
