Old ref here. The referee accepts an assignment. They do not have the authority to stop a game unless the conditions are unsafe. "Unplayable" is not a term that we can consider unless it is dangerous. I have ref'd a game like this. I kept pulling my underwear up to keep it from falling down my legs, so wet. Great game. No one complained that the game shouldn't have been played. Perhaps it needs to be addressed by concacaf or fifa, but it has not been done, as of today. Both teams faced the same difficulties. It was fair.

Legally a FIFA decision but organizers hadnt planned ahead with option in case of rain. Apparently it does rain in Southern CA

The match should not have been played. Neither captain, and neither coach wanted it. The ref also appeared to consider a postponement. What a farce this has made of the tournament. Canada deserves an apology. (but I bet we'll let it slide since the US made their blessed final...as planned....)

The ref tested the field and concluded that the game shouldn’t have been played. A concacaf off field official decided to keep playing

Don't blame the US. I'm not sure if you noticed, but they were both on the same field. This was a decision by financial folks, not by either team.

Can we blame the party responsible for this? I’d hate not to hold them accountable for such a garbage call to let the game go on. They should be penalized if not altogether disallowed from handling these type of situations again. If the USWNT had lost, maybe there’d be more push for this. I stopped watching after the first half. Ain’t no way I was watching a whole 90min of this mess.

They didn't watch it obviously, the game should've been postponed. The bigger issue is ref/var willfully missed a clear penalty by the us which would've ended the match at 90 mins. Both Mexico and Canada got screwed with biased refs. Brazil played well but Mexico got nothing but calls against them all game, blatant, obvious, incorrect calls. Honestly seemed like a host vs South American team final was the desired outcome in this tournament. Real shame to end the tournament this way for two of the strongest teams in the region.
