Great reaction. I like to think Ali Sethi and the producers were going for the old crooner, lounge singer vibe in this one. That's why the suit and bow tie. And that also ties in with the musical arrangement that Sethi chose for his rendition. It was a decent attempt and very pleasant to listen to. Of course Khan Sahab was a master of his craft and like you say the variety of expressions he conveyed is not present here.

All said and done . i just want to add , being a Harvard Graduate (living in the US) that atmosphere has greatly influenced Ali's singing style. Even in the "murki" or alaap he gave kinda jazzy feel. which sounded brighter, Mehdi Hassan's presentation was within the scale and was more melodic and Ali's one was more harmonic.

Anyone can differ BUT I think Ali Sethi's voice comes from mouth and upper throat while Mehdi Hassan's voice comes from WITHIN and from DEEP DOWN, there is no repetition in original song by Mehdi Hassan while Ali Sethi's song (as you very wisely suggested) was template based.

You are right in this rendition Ali sethi tried to sing very much calculated. I think Ali sethi's best rendition is not Ranjish Hi Sahi but actually "Gulon main rang bhare" is. In Gulon main rang bhare you will see more variations in singing but in free and easy way. In my view that was too good musically and performance wise

Live ghazal singing of a legend like Mehdi Hasan is totally a different thing than a studio recording. Secondly, I believe that any junior singer does not dare to do different experiments with any senior's song, especially ghazal, because no one can do better or beat people like Mehdi Hasan, so I guess Ali Sethi did not go beyond his limits and followed almost a same pattern. Thirdly, it is a ghazal. Therefore, coke studio people were bound to follow a smooth template rather than using too many western instruments. They tried to keep ghazal as ghazal with light classical touch.

I am a bit late. However no issue. Ananya G Aadaab to you and your gublu mublu husband. I noticed for the first time that Ali had started mukhra in a high note unlike Mahdi sahib. + He did justice to the ghazal. He didn't experiment much because Original's name is very big. Ananya G, please next time react on "Yaar Vekho" from Sanam Marvi. CS6. the interesting fact about that song is: that was a rehearsal by her. When she went for the final take she couldn't sing as rehearsal version so Rohail kept the earlier version and mastered that. That song blows the minds of listeners. Eagerly waiting. Stay blessed.
