The whole housewife thing... obviously everyone has different goals and we should all be allowed to do that, but I also think everyone, but women in particular should always have a financial backup plan. The only thing I'd ever say to someone who wants to stop working and have someone else provide for them, is to have a safety net in case things go wrong. One of the main reasons women stay in abusive relationships is lack of financial means to support themselves.

Honestly, any man who’s willing to support a housewife should be willing to give her money that can be put into a personal nest egg for her. And if he’s not willing to do that, huge red flag! Sounds like someone who wants a slave, not a partner. Housewives do a lot of labour.

I agree, but to play devil's advocate.... I've heard women talk about that if the relationship goes bad, the woman will get the house, kids, and child support and sometimes alimony. Then I'm assuming they will find another man out there to take place. I 100% agree with you though that you need a back up just in case. Hopefully you never need it, but you have it.

@@runningerins4027 If the husband is a charming person who can convince the judge the wife is the problem the wife gets nothing and has her rep ruined. While fictional the third season of You has a great example of some of the shit a woman in an abusive relationship might deal with. It is also incredibly difficult for single mothers to date if they weren't working (gaps in resume make working again very hard) prior to divorce and then there's the matter of childcare. Yes there is probably a bias towards the wife in the relationship if a divorce happens but that doesn't mean she's a scumbag for trying to find someone else afterwards.

As a housewife somebody should shine a light for that girl to let her know that being at home is just as hard as going to work if not harder because you’re completely isolated. So don’t let that grass on the other side fool you.

I agree with you. Being at home with the kids is a lot of work. Running a household is a lot of work. My husband and I worked full time until I had my first child. The cost of daycare amounted to my whole paycheck. It did not make sense to work in order to pay for daycare. So I stayed home with the kids. You do feel isolated sometimes because being a stay at home Mom can limit your contact with other adults. I miss the daily office chatter and whatnot. I don't regret a single minute of it. Right now the kids are grown and my husband and I are self employed, running a business together.

small note from an English literature Ph.D. Candidate: English does not have a dedicated pronoun to refer to the second person plural. Y’all takes this place and does productive work for the language instance you are referring to. Other languages have the second person plural such as the Spanish vosotros. Yes, y’all is a contraction of you & all. As the poster suggested, y’all is a brilliant development in English to refer to the second person plural.

yeah, y'all makes sense to me as a non native english speaker. in romance languages we have a different singular and plural you. but in english it can sometimes make it a bit hard to understand if it's referring to one or multiple people, and y'all does a good job at helping with that. i think a lot of us who have english as a second language use y'all because it helps with the singular vs plural distinction

"Thou" is the singular, informal, second person pronoun which fell out of usage ("Tu" in French). Now, "You" refers to both the singular and plural second person pronoun. The colloquial use of "Y'all" is distinctly Southern thing. I don't think it has derived from AAVE as far as I can tell.

There is a basic fine that is same price for everyone but if you drive over 20km/h past the speed limit then the fine is proportional to your income. There have been many other cases of celebrities getting like 1000€ speeding tickets because of this system.

So, the trick or treating thing. I think you both are focusing solely on the candy aspect, but for a lot of us Halloween lovers, the candy isn't the exciting draw. I have never been a huge candy fan, but my favourite part has always been walking around and seeing different peoples costumes and house decorations - the candy was just a bonus! My friends and I went trick or treating all throughout high school, and while we had some kind and generous folk give us candy, there were others who clearly either judged us, made us 'do something' to earn the candy (like sing a song, or do a silly dance, nothing crazy) or would say "no, you're too old for this, go home". It is very disheartening when all you want to do is celebrate the holiday, and people tell you you're too old to enjoy it. That is not even mentioning people who may have learning disabilities, or sensory issues that may not be visual, that go trick or treating because they're still in a place in their life when this is important to them and they are turned away by crotchety old people. Also, in Winnipeg we don't have devils night, we call it Mischief night - on October 30th kids go out and destroy Halloween decorations or smash peoples pumpkins, just being jerky teens. If they were able to look forward to trick or treating I truly do think that less kids would partake in those activities. I'm not saying no one should stay home to hand out the candy, but I agree that there should be no age limit to going out and enjoying the holiday if that is what you want to do!
@pasc86993 жыл бұрын
If older kids came at the end of the night my mom would ask what the costumes were. If they seemed capable she would say they have to sing a song for the candy. It was fun for me as a kid since I was done going door to door at 7:30 and got to see “big kids” do I’m a little tea pot or who let the dogs out. If you are old enough to get a job and buy candy you need to work for it! If you want to dress up and see others costumes as an adult you can go to a Halloween party

Yeah, I felt like they were a bit mean about this post lol. While going trick-or-treating as an adult may be pushing it, there's reason to believe OP was saying that lightheartedly anyway. I don't see the issue with teenagers trick-or-treating... it's a wholesome social activity, literally where's the harm? I don't even believe teenagers under 18 should *have to* work at all, granted they live in ideal conditions. It's very likely that a 15 years old wouldn't even care that much about being handed a few pieces of candy, so if they go trick-or-treating, maybe don't ruin their fun?

"I don't want to work, I want to be a stay at home mom." You can tell that girl has no idea how much work goes into pregnancy, parenthood or keeping up a home. I don't have kids of my own, but I was a caretaker for my nephew 10 hours a day, and those *just 10 hours* (I gave him back after 5pm lol) were both incredibly rewarding and also draining as hell. There's no 'break'. Every second of your time is focused on the child, the cleaning, the cooking, the planning, the doctors appointments, the "I'm gonna put this in the microwave real quick and get the dishwasher goi- OH SHIT WHY IS IT QUIET. WHAT IS HE UP TO". It sounds like she thinks her life will be easy if she stays at home and produces kids for a rich man, but pregnancy, parenting and housekeeping are all forms of work in their own right that can be exhausting, and hard on your body and mind. It's childish to think that's a walk in the park. Edit to say that a few comments I saw were suggesting that we may be misinterpreting her. I don't think this is the case. The information she gives is telling: she had a rich boyfriend that wanted to wait a few years to develop the relationship and then have kids, so she dumped him because she wants kids NOW, regardless of the quality of the relationship she's in. She says she wants someone to provide for HER and never specifies providing for her children. It's all very self centered and "Me" language, with very little care shown for her relationship with her partner or potential children. It reads to me that she just wants an easy life where she can immediately move out of her parents house and in to the house of a rich man that will let her stay home and pump out kids, which she perceives as 'easy' and 'not work.'

Stepphenie Meyer did both with Twilight. "Midnight Sun" is an sequel from Edward's perspective, it gave some minimal background information that was previously unknown... but otherwise uninteresting. And "Life and Death" was a gender swapped Twilight, that made the other 3 books in the series irrelevant. I am sure that these methods can be effective, but I have yet to see it done in a satisfactory manner.

Do you think these people when deciding what classes to take that year actually chose these two options? No, they didn't. Things we learned in these two classes were how to do your taxes, car loans, mortgages, even how to plan a wedding and budget for one and when having kids. As a woman of a certain age from the southern US, I can tell you that we were discouraged from using y’all in school as it was frowned upon as improper grammar. Also when I worked for a pretty large newspaper in the 80s y’all would never have been exceptable in print except in a quote. All of this being said, I think it’s great that a term from “southern” America has gotten the approval of other English speaking countries. Ironically I’m not sure other parts of the US use it with frequency. There (of course) is a map somewhere with demographics of “y’all’s” usage nationwide. I personally think it works well as a plural you esp in current world of inclusivity.

Yesss, it really grinds my gears when people take the same story is retell it from a different perspective, even from the same story. It is considered lazy writing and often times it flops because you really don't need to see the alternate perspectives. The only times it is truly successful/interesting is when they don't actually tell the same story, they tell an alternate timeline one. Think the Disney movies that focus on the villain, like Maleficent or Cruella. Those are new unique stories and that is why they were successful.

I feel like so many people get so little education on how many jobs are out there, college degree or not. So many people settle for sucky jobs when there’s much better out there and they’re not aware of it. So many people stay at the same job in the same dead end role for “comfort” or “security” or they’re not confident in their worth. I know friends that are scared to ask for what they’re worth at job interviews bc you’re taught to just accept anything if you’re young. Most of the time if you ask for more, they’re able to do it. Idk, I just feel like more advice on life, that many kids don’t get from their parents because they’re busy working, or they’re not interested, or they’re in foster care, etc. not teaching these “assumed” skills is detrimental to many kids that don’t have a stable home and leads to a cycle of what their parents do bc that’s all they know. Ofc not everyone is like that, but many kids are robbed of valuable life skills because their parents weren’t able/ didn’t want to teach. I feel like we would see a lot more success in young adults if we pumped more confidence into them and taught them their worth in the future, because they are our future!

Fun fact for the reading one! Books that follow the same plot line from a different character’s perspective is called a companion novel; not only do they exist, but they’re becoming increasingly popular I feel. A great example is Jenna Moreci’s “The Savior’s Series”; book 1 (The Savior’s Champion) follows Tobias and his adventure through this gladiator tournament, book 2 (The Savior’s Sister) follows Leila and her adventure during the tournament but has its own unique storyline. The events are the same but the stories are different. However, yes, most of the time if you’re looking for a story with an IDENTICAL plot, you just want a few chapters detailing that character’s interaction with the events from their perspective, NOT a whole novel. Companion novels only work when the same events impact characters in wildly different ways :) (I’m not going to explain TSC and TSS differences because it spoils book 1)!

gotta disagree with the trick or treating one, mostly because it feels like you guys have an outdated view of teens. as a teen, i wanted desperately to trick or treat. a lot of teens now do too, but it's usually seen as embarrassing or inappropriate for them to. i gave up trick or treating because i'd get weird looks, but i thought it was really fun to go door to door and get to walk around at night safely with my family or friends then enjoy candy with them afterwards. not all teens are interested in the party scene, I didn't start going to parties until i was 18 and even then it was just my friends and i watching youtube videos and eating candy. i know i'm not some paragon of teens' secret wants, but i know a lot of teens still would enjoy it and only don't because adults give them shit for it. it's why i stopped. i had younger brothers still young enough to do it, why shouldn't i have been allowed to go with them without dirty looks from adults? probably a bit of a soft spot for me, mostly because halloween is my favorite holiday, and the spooky season is my favorite time of the year. i also know this want to still trick or treat is especially common in neurodivergent teens and teens who don't get a lot of other freedoms. i was both, i'm autistic and i didn't have many friends for most of my life so getting to dress up and go out was my favorite thing to do every year. i still dress up! long ranty comment aside, i just think the point of the post was missed. a lot of teens like going out trick or treating but give it up because it's seen as very childish in a world where they're made to be adults at younger and younger ages. let kids of all ages have fun, 6 or 16.

A really healthy way of parenting around food to take the novelty out of fun foods (basically devaluing them as a prize so you're less likely to overeat) by having the dessert be on the plate with dinner. I've actually started doing this with myself and my SiL does it with my nieces. It's surprisingly effective and I'm far less snacky because of it.
