The whole housewife thing... obviously everyone has different goals and we should all be allowed to do that, but I also think everyone, but women in particular should always have a financial backup plan. The only thing I'd ever say to someone who wants to stop working and have someone else provide for them, is to have a safety net in case things go wrong. One of the main reasons women stay in abusive relationships is lack of financial means to support themselves.

Honestly, any man who’s willing to support a housewife should be willing to give her money that can be put into a personal nest egg for her. And if he’s not willing to do that, huge red flag! Sounds like someone who wants a slave, not a partner. Housewives do a lot of labour.

Yes! I work with domestic violence survivors and about 90% of them stayed longer with their abuser due to finances and none of the women I currently work with have a degree or job training so they are really struggling to get on their feet.

I agree, but to play devil's advocate.... I've heard women talk about that if the relationship goes bad, the woman will get the house, kids, and child support and sometimes alimony. Then I'm assuming they will find another man out there to take place. I 100% agree with you though that you need a back up just in case. Hopefully you never need it, but you have it.

@@runningerins4027 If the husband is a charming person who can convince the judge the wife is the problem the wife gets nothing and has her rep ruined. While fictional the third season of You has a great example of some of the shit a woman in an abusive relationship might deal with. It is also incredibly difficult for single mothers to date if they weren't working (gaps in resume make working again very hard) prior to divorce and then there's the matter of childcare. Yes there is probably a bias towards the wife in the relationship if a divorce happens but that doesn't mean she's a scumbag for trying to find someone else afterwards.

As a housewife somebody should shine a light for that girl to let her know that being at home is just as hard as going to work if not harder because you’re completely isolated. So don’t let that grass on the other side fool you.

I agree with you. Being at home with the kids is a lot of work. Running a household is a lot of work. My husband and I worked full time until I had my first child. The cost of daycare amounted to my whole paycheck. It did not make sense to work in order to pay for daycare. So I stayed home with the kids. You do feel isolated sometimes because being a stay at home Mom can limit your contact with other adults. I miss the daily office chatter and whatnot. I don't regret a single minute of it. Right now the kids are grown and my husband and I are self employed, running a business together.

Theres nothing wrong with being a house wife or a stay at home mom, but that poster just sounded so entitled and lazy. She said she's only 20 so hopefully in a few years she matures and realizes that there's more to a relationship than finding a super rich guy that you can drain all the money from.

I think it's terribly sad that she assumes being a housewife is easy. I'm curious how she was raised, and if she is mirroring or defying her parents set of circumstances... Maybe she has an alpha mom and a beta dad who makes all the money and just allows his wife to control everything. I've always been of the belief that things should be equal. I don't tolerate "alpha" men, but I don't want a "beta" either... I prefer equals, communication, and being a part of a team in regards to my man, we've been together 17 years and have each other's backs 100%. I guess everyone is different, but I agree with you... Her stance is incredibly lazy, entitled, and out of touch with reality in my opinion.

@@heatherbonelli I mean if you asked me a few years ago I’d probably tell you that house wife’s or stay at home moms were lazy. That’s just what people around me told me so that’s what I always thought. I think whatever her parent’s situation is, they can’t fully agree with what she’s doing. Like she doesn’t even want a job or want to go to school while she’s waiting to get married. She just wants to sit at home and do nothing, or probably spend her parents money on stuff. I completely agree with you that relationships need to be equal. Like I hope she realizes that she needs to find a man who’s fine with her not having a job and who has a salary that can support them and their future children. Cause something that I didn’t fully understand until I got a job is that just cause you have money doesn’t mean you can afford everything you want. Like if I only have $100 in my bank account and I want something that’s $100, I can’t afford that. And I don’t think she will ever realize that if she’s as dependent on a man as she makes it sound in that post.

People prepare for Halloween by buying candy & might not have a ton of non perishable foods on hand to donate they weren’t planning on using for dinner that week. Seems like it would’ve been more productive if you set up a drive at a grocery store or something where people can add a few extra items just to donate.

i'm young and definitely agree with the one about car touch screens. i want to know what i'm doing by the feel of what my fingers are on without looking. i have an older car from long before touch screens. its climate controls are up and down buttons to set a specific temperature or the fan location and i don't even like that, because i have to look at the little screen to see what i'm changing the temp to or whether the fan is on floor or whatever. in the car before this one, i had the dial style where you memorize what different dial orientations mean without having to look, and that's what i prefer above all else.

I 100% agree. My parents got a Seat Leon and the touch interface drives me nuts. There are climate control buttons which sit flush to the rest of the panelling and don't have lights so are useless in the dark. Trying to adjust it from the screen requires 2 or 3 taps and a fair amount of attention which is insane! Worst interface ever.

small note from an English literature Ph.D. Candidate: English does not have a dedicated pronoun to refer to the second person plural. Y’all takes this place and does productive work for the language instance you are referring to. Other languages have the second person plural such as the Spanish vosotros. Yes, y’all is a contraction of you & all. As the poster suggested, y’all is a brilliant development in English to refer to the second person plural.

yeah, y'all makes sense to me as a non native english speaker. in romance languages we have a different singular and plural you. but in english it can sometimes make it a bit hard to understand if it's referring to one or multiple people, and y'all does a good job at helping with that. i think a lot of us who have english as a second language use y'all because it helps with the singular vs plural distinction

Another English lit Ph.D. student here. If you look at the etymology, "You" is the formal, plural of the second person pronoun ("Vous" in French). "Thou" is the singular, informal, second person pronoun which fell out of usage ("Tu" in French). Now, "You" refers to both the singular and plural second person pronoun. The colloquial use of "Y'all" is distinctly Southern thing. I don't think it has derived from AAVE as far as I can tell.

So, the trick or treating thing. I think you both are focusing solely on the candy aspect, but for a lot of us Halloween lovers, the candy isn't the exciting draw. I have never been a huge candy fan, but my favourite part has always been walking around and seeing different peoples costumes and house decorations - the candy was just a bonus! My friends and I went trick or treating all throughout high school, and while we had some kind and generous folk give us candy, there were others who clearly either judged us, made us 'do something' to earn the candy (like sing a song, or do a silly dance, nothing crazy) or would say "no, you're too old for this, go home". It is very disheartening when all you want to do is celebrate the holiday, and people tell you you're too old to enjoy it. That is not even mentioning people who may have learning disabilities, or sensory issues that may not be visual, that go trick or treating because they're still in a place in their life when this is important to them and they are turned away by crotchety old people. Also, in Winnipeg we don't have devils night, we call it Mischief night - on October 30th kids go out and destroy Halloween decorations or smash peoples pumpkins, just being jerky teens. If they were able to look forward to trick or treating I truly do think that less kids would partake in those activities. I'm not saying no one should stay home to hand out the candy, but I agree that there should be no age limit to going out and enjoying the holiday if that is what you want to do!

If older kids came at the end of the night my mom would ask what the costumes were. If they seemed capable she would say they have to sing a song for the candy. It was fun for me as a kid since I was done going door to door at 7:30 and got to see “big kids” do I’m a little tea pot or who let the dogs out. If you are old enough to get a job and buy candy you need to work for it! If you want to dress up and see others costumes as an adult you can go to a Halloween party
@jadziajan
@jadziajan 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I felt like they were a bit mean about this post lol. While going trick-or-treating as an adult may be pushing it, there's reason to believe OP was saying that lightheartedly anyway. I don't see the issue with teenagers trick-or-treating... it's a wholesome social activity, literally where's the harm? I don't even believe teenagers under 18 should *have to* work at all, granted they live in ideal conditions. It's very likely that a 15 years old wouldn't even care that much about being handed a few pieces of candy, so if they go trick-or-treating, maybe don't ruin their fun?

I went trick-or-treating when I was 12 and lots of adults gave me shit for it. Idk about trick-or-treating as an adult, but definitely don't shame older children for it. Also a lot of the houses told me my costume wasn't good enough for trick-or-treating; my family couldn't afford to buy a costume, so I did the best I could to make one. The adults whose houses I was trick-or-treating at just thought I was a lazy teenager "taking candy away from the kids," but it was really mean and unfair of them

12 would be way too old where I live, Yes, you’re still a child, but there are things you’re too old for at certain ages. Your parents should have protected you and told you not to go. Just like there’s an age where you tell children Santa isn’t real, if they haven’t figured that out themselves.

It seems cool, but the alternative stories would probably be lesser. In the original work, the author made the plot and characters etc the way they did to tell a message or theme or to teach something, so if they made characters do something else the story probably wouldn’t mean as much in that version. Stepphenie Meyer did both with Twilight. "Midnight Sun" is an sequel from Edward's perspective, it gave some minimal background information that was previously unknown... but otherwise uninteresting. And "Life and Death" was a gender swapped Twilight, that made the other 3 books in the series irrelevant. I am sure that these methods can be effective, but I have yet to see it done in a satisfactory manner.

There is a basic fine that is same price for everyone but if you drive over 20km/h past the speed limit then the fine is proportional to your income. "I don't want to work, I want to be a stay at home mom." You can tell that girl has no idea how much work goes into pregnancy, parenthood or keeping up a home. I don't have kids of my own, but I was a caretaker for my nephew 10 hours a day, and those *just 10 hours* (I gave him back after 5pm lol) were both incredibly rewarding and also draining as hell. There's no 'break'. Every second of your time is focused on the child, the cleaning, the cooking, the planning, the doctors appointments, the "I'm gonna put this in the microwave real quick and get the dishwasher goi- OH SHIT WHY IS IT QUIET. WHAT IS HE UP TO". It sounds like she thinks her life will be easy if she stays at home and produces kids for a rich man, but pregnancy, parenting and housekeeping are all forms of work in their own right that can be exhausting, and hard on your body and mind. It's childish to think that's a walk in the park. Edit to say that a few comments I saw were suggesting that we may be misinterpreting her. I don't think this is the case. The information she gives is telling: she had a rich boyfriend that wanted to wait a few years to develop the relationship and then have kids, so she dumped him because she wants kids NOW, regardless of the quality of the relationship she's in. She says she wants someone to provide for HER and never specifies providing for her children. It's all very self centered and "Me" language, with very little care shown for her relationship with her partner or potential children. It reads to me that she just wants an easy life where she can immediately move out of her parents house and in to the house of a rich man that will let her stay home and pump out kids, which she perceives as 'easy' and 'not work.'

So many people stay at the same job in the same dead end role for “comfort” or “security” or they’re not confident in their worth. I know friends that are scared to ask for what they’re worth at job interviews bc you’re taught to just accept anything if you’re young. Most of the time if you ask for more, they’re able to do it. Idk, I just feel like more advice on life, that many kids don’t get from their parents because they’re busy working, or they’re not interested, or they’re in foster care, etc. not teaching these “assumed” skills is detrimental to many kids that don’t have a stable home and leads to a cycle of what their parents do bc that’s all they know. Ofc not everyone is like that, but many kids are robbed of valuable life skills because their parents weren’t able/ didn’t want to teach. gotta disagree with the trick or treating one, mostly because it feels like you guys have an outdated view of teens. as a teen, i wanted desperately to trick or treat. a lot of teens now do too, but it's usually seen as embarrassing or inappropriate for them to. i gave up trick or treating because i'd get weird looks, but i thought it was really fun to go door to door and get to walk around at night safely with my family or friends then enjoy candy with them afterwards. not all teens are interested in the party scene, I didn't start going to parties until i was 18 and even then it was just my friends and i watching youtube videos and eating candy. i know i'm not some paragon of teens' secret wants, but i know a lot of teens still would enjoy it and only don't because adults give them shit for it. it's why i stopped. i had younger brothers still young enough to do it, why shouldn't i have been allowed to go with them without dirty looks from adults? probably a bit of a soft spot for me, mostly because halloween is my favorite holiday, and the spooky season is my favorite time of the year. i also know this want to still trick or treat is especially common in neurodivergent teens and teens who don't get a lot of other freedoms. i was both, i'm autistic and i didn't have many friends for most of my life so getting to dress up and go out was my favorite thing to do every year. i still dress up! long ranty comment aside, i just think the point of the post was missed. a lot of teens like going out trick or treating but give it up because it's seen as very childish in a world where they're made to be adults at younger and younger ages. let kids of all ages have fun, 6 or 16.

Prefacing this with *no hate to Cristine and Ben* just saying this because I need to hear it myself after the part about the person who didn't want to work. If you can't work because you are disabled and/or neurodivergent, you are not worthless. The world is not designed with disabled and neurodivergent people in mind. While it's probably true that there's a job out there that would be suitable for you, the reality is the actual number of those roles AVAILABLE is not enough for the number of people who need them. Support to get in to work or to get benefits is there, but systems make it difficult to access that support so many of us do have to rely on partners or parents financially. Your money does not equal your value. Your ability to work does not equal your worth. Please don't feel bad when they bash people for not having jobs because you have worth.

well in this case they're not bashing on unemployed people who are unemployed due to things like mental or physical health. they're targetting someone who is clearly just wanting a sugar daddy so she doesn't have to work and just stays home all day while he provides. the fact she dumped a rich dude because he didn't want kids for another 5 years shows she only wants kids to properly secure her finances, since even with a divorce, the rich guy would still have to pay child support, which would keep her financially secure without a job. i don't think i've ever seen them talk about about people who are unable to work, only about those who don't want to work because they just want the money without the work

That’s true, but I think having a separate word for you plural and you singular is a great improvement for english, and y’all is my favourite of the options.

True, because when we were kids and they(schools/curriculum) were trying to shove english grammar down our throats we were specifically taught that "you" is a singular as well as a plural common noun. Nothing wrong with improving and using y'all but seeing native english speakers wondering about the plural form of you was hilarious!

This is somewhat unrelated to the episode but more about Cristine and Ben in general. I really enjoy seeing them as a couple. A lot of the small interactions are just very sweet and just put a smile on my face. Also, Ben's attempt at a British accent cracks me up.

For “equals” honestly Star Wars isn’t the best comparison for how fleshing out more of the universe can narrow down the creative expansion of the universe. There are literally hundreds of stories across multiple media types that prior to Didnee takeover were considered cannon extended universe to the original trilogy. Were the prequel and sequel movies necessary? Debatable, but the expansion of that universe has led to more and more creativity for official media.

Book "equals": I love the Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow "equal" stories or as I think it is called parallel novel and it added more to both stories :D So cool and well done imo! And love they are the starting point for 2 different series :)

I also liked how that series did it - I feel like I’m ok with parallel novels because while they may have common events, they are ultimately not the same story. I would definitely not be interested in reading, for example, Harry Potter from Hermione’s perspective because she went through too many of the same events as Harry.

As a woman of a certain age from the southern US, I can tell you that we were discouraged from using y’all in school as it was frowned upon as improper grammar. Also when I worked for a pretty large newspaper in the 80s y’all would never have been exceptable in print except in a quote. All of this being said, I think it’s great that a term from “southern” America has gotten the approval of other English speaking countries. Ironically I’m not sure other parts of the US use it with frequency. There (of course) is a map somewhere with demographics of “y’all’s” usage nationwide. I personally think it works well as a plural you esp in current world of inclusivity.

Absolutely agree that touch screens should be minimized in cars, and screens in general (super light sensitive and find it distracting). Also, we just got a new heater and the thermostat is "smart" and it is the most annoying thing. Why is it easier than just moving a dial or lever?
@Darkwiccawillow
@Darkwiccawillow 2 жыл бұрын
the thermostat for our heater has an old school lever on it and I never know if when I move it I actually set the temperature that I want or if I actually did anything at all. Our basement has an electric fireplace when we had to replace thermostat there, we put in a more modern one with a screen & buttons. When I set this one at least I know it does what I want it to do. I can’t speak for car touch screens, the car I drive is a 2010 model…

On referring to people in the plural: I work in public radio and we always say you. We know that multiple people are listening, but we try to imagine one person enjoying the broadcast. It’s meant to create a connection that feels companionable. And funny story: in the south you say y’all for a single person, and “all y’all” is plural, lol. It depends on where you’re from 😂😂😂

There’s a house on my street that handed out adult “treats” in addition to kids candy on Halloween. The adults treats were Jell-O shots. I am also of the opinion that if you dress up in a costume at whatever age you can get candy at my house on Halloween as I would prefer that to people getting into trouble.

Yesss, it really grinds my gears when people take the same story is retell it from a different perspective, even from the same story. It is considered lazy writing and often times it flops because you really don't need to see the alternate perspectives. The only times it is truly successful/interesting is when they don't actually tell the same story, they tell an alternate timeline one. Think the Disney movies that focus on the villain, like Maleficent or Cruella. Those are new unique stories and that is why they were successful.

oh and on the life skills one, this is totally true. in my state in the US (VA) you're literally required to take a personal finance class to graduate high school. we filled out mock taxes, mock checkbooks, participated in a budgeting simulation, learned about all financial products and most typed of financial institutions, and even participated in a simulation for investing in the stock market. yet as an adult, i keep hearing people here in my peer ground saying that whole "i didn't learn taxes in school but i'm glad i know polynomials i don't use" thing or whatever. high schoolers just don't always fully absorb what they don't care about.

Buttons are so much better for appliances and cars than touch screens! Touch screen kitchen appliances and washing machines make me so annoyed and angry because they never work properly, it's hard to know if you've pressed something without the physical feedback of a button, and if you have to go into menus but can't see the display they're so much harder to use - and that makes them so inaccessible 😫. Buttons are so much more... predictable and satisfying, I have my sight but I find tactile/haptic feedback for things like that is really important and helpful for me because I have trouble with proprioception without having some sort of physical feedback because of nerve dysfunction and a medication I'm on that reduces nerve feedback (by design, because it's for nerve pain 😅). And haptic technology like in phones helps somewhat, but it's not engaging proprioceptors in the same way that a physical button does when it moves and clicks. There are some people who have peripheral sensory neuropathy that means they are numb to vibrations, but have the sense of position albeit to a lesser extent than typical, and haptic technology feedback doesn't work anywhere near as well as buttons that physically move for them - so button technologies that encompass multiple modes of offering sensory feedback are the best option for allowing the most people possible to be able to use something! 😊 (multisensory feedback options with physical and audiovisual components are the best though, with the ability to choose which feedback mechanisms you personally want to use). As for the car thing specifically - physical buttons are by far easier and safer, because with a touch screen, you can't necessarily be sure you've pressed the right thing, and zones of the screen can do multiple different things depending what menu or mode you're on, which makes it harder to navigate while driving... I have a small touch screen sat nav built into my car and I only use it to put the map view on, and I hate using it while I'm actually driving because it's a resistive touch screen (the squishy type) rather than capacitive (like phone screens) and to me at least, it seems way less sensitive to my touch than my phone 😫. My dad's car on the other hand has a clicking dial, and a normal screen where the menu option you're on is highlighted and it's SO much easier to use while driving because you can hear and feel the click and just glance to check the option you want is highlighted and click the dial down to select it - so I can use it for the functions I want without looking at all, or just glancing at the end to check I'm where I wanna be in the menu... touch screens just don't offer enough sensory feedback to be safely used much while driving imo! ... anyway thanks for coming to my TED talk on engineering sensory feedback properly and accessibility? 🤣

I get it honestly. As a kid I was never allowed to trick or treat because my parents were afraid for my safety first of all and because they are very Christian and against it as a whole but now as a young adult I could actually do it and do it safely but it's not socially acceptable so I guess it's something I'll never get to experience

Fun fact for the reading one! Books that follow the same plot line from a different character’s perspective is called a companion novel; not only do they exist, but they’re becoming increasingly popular I feel. A great example is Jenna Moreci’s “The Savior’s Series”; book 1 (The Savior’s Champion) follows Tobias and his adventure through this gladiator tournament, book 2 (The Savior’s Sister) follows Leila and her adventure during the tournament but has its own unique storyline. The events are the same but the stories are different. However, yes, most of the time if you’re looking for a story with an IDENTICAL plot, you just want a few chapters detailing that character’s interaction with the events from their perspective, NOT a whole novel. Companion novels only work when the same events impact characters in wildly different ways :) (I’m not going to explain TSC and TSS differences because it spoils book 1)!
